Hankook Announces Plant No. 7

A US$353 million manufacturing facility in Bekasi, Indonesia will become the seventh factory operated by Hankook Tire and its fifth facility outside of South Korea. The tyre maker’s decision to invest in a factory in Indonesia was announced a month after Hankook stated its intention to build a plant in China’s Chongqing province. Adding a seventh plant to Hankook’s global production network will, the company says, enable annual global output to reach 100 million units by 2014 – a stated goal of Hankook Tire’s mid-term business target.

More than Blue Sky Thinking – Hankook Displays Concept Van Tyre

If Hankook Tire has its way, van drivers will not be excluded from a future that includes more environmentally friendly tyres. The Korean manufacturer has shown off its vision for a more fuel-efficient and lower rolling resistance van tyre at the IAA Commercial Vehicle show in Hannover, Germany. Hankook calls this prototype tyre Concept Blue and says it anticipates future trends starting at the tyre dimension 195/45 R 20. The tyre’s diameter of 700 mm is relatively large by comparison to its width, proportions that Hankook says yield a characteristically narrow yet high-profile silhouette that “fits perfectly with the overall image of electric and hybrid vehicles.” From a technical standpoint, the combination of a low air drag coefficient and low rolling resistance means that less energy is used. Hankook also points to the sidewall and shoulder area’s aerodynamic properties as two other design highlights.

Sustainability, new European-orientated factories and EV tyres

July’s edition of Tyres & Accessories magazine focuses on three points – our latest ranking of the leading tyre manufacturers in terms of turnover and accompanying analysis of key players in terms of share price and third-party brand valuation (see pages 14 to 21); headlines and interviews from the recent The Tire Cologne exhibition (see pages 26 to 41); and our scheduled mining and construction tyre feature (see page 48 onwards). While they are not intentionally related, the impact measured within the pages of our leading tyremakers table and accompanying analysis, echoes into the key themes and movements on-show at Tire Cologne. And that impact revolves around three themes: one philosophical, one strategic and one product-related, namely – sustainability, investment in factories and the development of electric vehicle ranges. Of course, these themes interrelate like the overlapping circles of a Venn diagram. But they also represent distinct themes in and of themselves.

Specialist vs all-rounder – Auto Bild tests tyres for EVs

Manufacturers approach tyre suitability for electric vehicles from varying angles. While some believe that EVs require specialised fitments, a growing number promote their entire product ranges as equally suitable for electric, petrol and diesel vehicles. Examining both approaches, Auto Bild has tested five standard tyre models and three specialised EV tyres. It fitted these eight products to a Kia EV6 in size 235/55 R19.

Car owners report EVs wear through tyres faster – JD Power

Electric vehicle (EV) owners are reporting faster tyre wear rates than they experience on internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. And that’s leading to a widening satisfaction gap between original equipment tyres and electric vehicles (EVs) and ICEs, according to the J.D. Power 2024 U.S. Original Equipment Tire Customer Satisfaction Study, released at the end of March. The study shows that EV owners have similar expectations of tyre wear as do owners of ICEs, despite EV tyres wearing faster due to greater vehicle weight and higher torque.

Backing the right sustainability horse

In recent years market observers have worn out the word unprecedented, but 2023 was another year of significant developments. From the ongoing impact of the Russia-Ukraine war and the continuing challenges of pandemic-related disruption to the transformation and rationalisation of European manufacturing that has followed in its wake, several stories have run and run because of their multi-faceted repercussions for the whole tyre business. In short, for some it was a good year. But for many, it has been a challenging 12 months – not least for those in the manufacturing side of the tyre business (see pages 28, 30 and 41 for more on that).

All new Bridgestone tyres to be ‘EV-ready’

Bridgestone will make all of its future tyres suitable for electric vehicles (EVs), setting out its strategy to supply car tyre markets during the transition from internal combustion engine (ICE) to electrified powertrains. Tyre-makers have approached EV tyres in a variety of ways, unveiling specialist product lines, adding EV-approved variations to existing product lines, or introducing new technologies to ensure entire portfolios are applicable to EV performance demands. Bridgestone’s Enliten tyre technology platform addresses these demands, which include improvements in energy efficiency, maximising battery range, and accommodating the increased weight and torque of EVs. A Bridgestone-commissioned survey showed increased consumer support for EVs on the back of both potential savings in fuel or energy prices and reducing the environment impact of their motoring.

Editorial: Dawn of a new era

As the June edition of Tyres & Accessories went to press, the UK celebrated the coronation of a new monarch. Tyres & Accessories marked the occasion too, as this special coronation edition demonstrates from its cover celebratory onwards. And, if NTDA HQ’s announcement about taking coronation day off to celebrate, paired with the association’s encouragement that tyre retailers from across the UK should do the same is anything to go by, we certainly weren’t the only ones.
