GT Radial tyres return to Gundlach exclusivity in Germany

Reifen Gundlach has resumed its exclusive distribution of GT Radial brand tyres in Germany. The new deal comes three years after Giti Tire ended their previously long-standing exclusive partnership with the wholesaler, started in 1994. Giti stated in 2017 that it wanted to to “achieve a higher market penetration with a planned realignment of the brand.” Part of the strategy was to make the GT Radial brand available through four different wholesalers. This coincided with the European entry of its eponymous Giti brand, with a special focus on the German market. At its peak, it had previously sold around a million GT Radial tyres per year, according to Gundlach statements. Now in 2020, the manufacturer has opted to resume its exclusive arrangement for GT Radial with Gundlach.

Continental Tyres and Mercedes-Benz partner in UK TPMS project

Continental Tyres and Mercedes-Benz Trucks UK have created a new integrated digital Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS).

In recent years, the popularity of multideck trailers has steadily increased as more and more fleets – especially those transporting in the grocery sector – recognise the environmental and cost benefits that these space-maximising trailers can bring. However, such trailer configurations are not without issues. A heavier load and greater frequency of use can lead to tyre pressure challenges and temperature build up around trailer wheels.

Bridgestone to supply Turanza Eco for Fiat 500 La Prima and VW ID.3

Bridgestone has confirmed that it will supply its Turanza Eco as original equipment on the VW ID.3 electric car. In doing so, the tyre manufacturer joins Continental and Goodyear in supplying rubber for the model. The Turanza Eco is equipped with Bridgestone’s Enliten technology, which reduces weight. This is a popular characteristic among auto manufacturers, especially in the electric car segment, as they seek to reduce both weight and rolling resistance from the tyres.

Tyre Boss fits high-capacity tyre press for OTR, specialist tyres

Glamorgan OTR tyre supplier Tyre Boss has invested in a 250 tonne static tyre press. The high capacity press, which is over 3m tall, can be used to press tyres from 5.00-8 solids to 24.00-35 solids. This means the company can handle the full range of pneumatic, solid and specialist tyres supplied by Tyre Boss for every make and size of off-highway machinery. The new tyre press is the latest investment for the Welsh company. It opened a second warehouse earlier in the year, having moved into new premises in 2019.

Tyre Boss opens second warehouse

Glamorgan-based solid and speciality OTR tyre specialist Tyre Boss has opened a second warehouse, coming quickly after it moved into new premises in 2019. Located close to the company’s headquarters, which brought disparate operations under one roof, further growth has led the company to open the second unit more than doubling the size of the space occupied by Tyre Boss. The new warehouse is only 100m away from existing operations, located on the same industrial estate, and will mainly be used for stocking the variety of tyre types distributed by the company, including the most popular TY Cushion models particularly suited to the waste and recycling sector. Tyre pressing and stocking, and rim and wheel maintenance and servicing remain in the original facility, along with all administrative duties.

Looking forward to recovery – be it L, U or V-shaped

Last month this column considered the range of 2020 market projections that existed. In short, as the column concluded, the consensus is that tyre demand will decline somewhere between 15 and 26 per cent during the course of this year. However, such a conclusion may also be on the conservative side. Certainly, when you talk with tyre wholesalers and distributors on the ground, some of those that didn’t opt to close their doors for a few weeks experienced even more marked declines in the short-term. Reports of tyre shops running on demand 70 to 75 per cent less than pre-lockdown levels are not uncommon. And yet, as lockdown eases across various UK and European markets – as well as beyond – the focus is quite rightly shifting to recovery.

Could Covid impact lead to widespread ‘dead-end’ stockpiling of waste tyres?

The Tyre Recovery Association is urging the Environment Agency to be more vigilant about stockpiling waste tyres. The association is concerned that the current relaxation of stockpile permitting rules could lead to operators storing more waste tyres than they can handle. With recycling gate prices high and cashflow under enormous pressure, the temptation to accept unrealistic collection price offers is great. However, if the collector is unable to process waste tyres as a result, abandoned waste tyre stockpiles could become “an ugly and very expensive problem”, which could prove damaging to the reputation of the tyre business as a whole.

At the same time that the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), Independent Garage Association (IGA) and Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) published post-lockdown garage reopening advice, they also echoed earlier calls from the tyre aftermarket business to support MOT tests.
