Hankook inaugurates Nürburgring Workshop

For many petrolheads, a lap of the Nürburgring is akin to a pilgrimage, and the circuit in Germany’s Eifel region is also a favourite site for performance car developers. Hankook Tire now has a presence in the neighbourhood, too. During a small ceremony held yesterday, the tyre maker officially opened the Nürburgring Workshop, a new branch office of its Hankook Europe Technical Centre (ETC).

Former Conti CEO Degenhart named in Dieselgate investigation

Wolfgang Schäfer’s tenure as chief financial officer of German automotive technology company and tyre maker Continental ended abruptly on Wednesday amidst ongoing investigations into the supply of illegal defeat devices for diesel engines, but he’s not the only former Continental manager in the prosecutor’s sights. A representative from the Public Prosecutor’s Office in Hannover announced yesterday that they’re also investigating former chief executive officer Elmar Degenhart and a further ex-board member linked to the Powertrain division, as well as two employees below board level.

Dieselgate probe: Continental ends relationship with CFO Schäfer

During an extraordinary meeting held yesterday, the Continental AG Supervisory Board agreed to mutually terminate Wolfgang Schäfer’s appointment as chief financial officer and member of the company’s Executive Board, effective immediately. Continental states that Schäfer’s departure from the company is linked to investigations by the public prosecutor’s office in Hannover, Germany, into the use of illegal defeat devices in diesel engines and shortcomings from Continental’s side in the ongoing investigations.

OE partnerships a focus for ZC Rubber Europe Technical Center

Zhongce Rubber Group Co., Ltd (ZC Rubber) has opened a facility in Germany to support its global original equipment development and to work with key OE accounts in the region. The Europe Technical Center (ETC) is located in Hannover and began operations on 1 November. Two key members of the team, Martin Wells and Jörn Tietjens, join the company from Giti Tire and bring with them considerable OE experience, particularly with Volkswagen Group.

IAA Transportation: New name & focus for major commercial vehicle show

The organiser of the German exhibition known as IAA Cars for many a year caught the zeitgeist in 2021 and repackaged the event as IAA Mobility, broadening its remit to include cyclists and other mobility stakeholders. Similarly, it is expanding the concept behind the IAA Commercial Vehicles show and giving it a new identity – IAA Transportation. When returning to its familiar home in Hannover from 20 to 25 September 2022 after a prolonged absence, it will for the first time “give actors from the fields of commercial vehicles, buses and logistics the opportunity to network with leading tech providers and suppliers.”

Football: Continental, MLS announce multi-year partnership renewal

The long-term partnership between Continental Tire and the top-flight men’s football league in the USA and Canada has been extended, and to commemorate this renewal of the relationship during its 150th anniversary year, Continental is gifting US$150,000 to the “incredibly passionate” fans of Major League Soccer (MLS), the Club Supporters Groups.

Agritechnica organiser expecting 2,000 exhibitors

With just five months to go until the Agritechnica 2022 show begins, organiser DLG (the German Agricultural Society) says it expects around 2,000 exhibitors from 50 countries to be present at the show in Hannover. It adds that its Agritechnica Tracker 2021 survey suggests that visitor interest “continues to grow” as well, with approximately 94 per cent of respondents indicating they will attend next year’s fair and 58 per cent already certain that they will be there.

Giti Tire welcomes AMS ‘good’ rating for GT Radial Winterpro2

Giti Tire has heralded the ‘good’ rating awarded to its new GT Radial Winterpro2 in the 2021 Auto Motor und Sport (AM&S) winter tyre test. The test pitted ten tyre brands from the premium and mid-range against each other in an all-round tyre of winter tyre performances. The WinterPro2 scored well in all tests, with especially good results in braking on dry, wet and snowy surfaces. The magazine also praised the tyre for ‘its comfortable ride properties [and] a firm and good grip on both wet and dry roads’.

Continental integrates printed electronics into rubber

Tyres are but one product that may benefit from Continental’s research into integrating printed electronics within rubber. At a facility in Freiburg, Germany, the company is working to digitalise rubber and plastic products that previously only performed mechanical tasks. Work conducted there under the leadership of Dr Tim Wolfer includes the three-year sensIC (sens for sensor and IC for integrated circuit) project, which is being co-funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research to the tune of 2.9 million euros.

GitiWinterW2 delivers double-digit improvements over previous winter tyre

Giti Tire has launched its new winter tyre on the European aftermarket. The GitiWinterW2 delivers improved dry dynamics, wet braking and aquaplaning resistance, the manufacturer states, while snow and ice grip and traction are maintained from the first edition. The tyre is available initially in 13 car and SUV sizes, including the 10 most popular in the European market, for rims between 15 and 19-inches. Giti adds that extra sizes will be introduced in 2022. The tyre targets a wide range of vehicles, from small and medium cars such as the VW Polo or VW Golf up to premium limousines such as the Mercedes C Class. CUV and SUV sizes are designed to be fitted on popular models like the Nissan Qashqai and VW Tiguan.

13 new GT Radial 4Seasons sizes improve all-season tyre market coverages

Giti Tire’s all-season tyre range has been boosted by 13 new sizes of the GT Radial 4Seasons tyre. Launched in May 2018 at Tire Cologne, the passenger car portfolio has increased by eight sizes to stand at 28, and now covers 26 of the 30 of the most in-demand sizes in Europe. The manufacturer has added five new SUV-marked tyres, bringing the SUV derivative up to a total of eight size options. The GT Radial 4Seasons range now includes 13 of the top 20 SUV size combinations in Europe, which equates to 70 per cent of market demand.

Continental testing prototype tyres for electric trucks

Electric propulsion is becoming increasingly attractive for heavy vehicle operators, and Continental is thus working together with truck and bus manufacturers on tyre solutions that meet these vehicles’ specific requirements. It is currently conducting testing at its Contidrom facility in northern Germany with an electric truck made by electric commercial vehicle specialist Futuricum.
