UHP tyre sales key to rising Hankook operating profit

Hankook Tire says sales of its UHP tyres were a “key growth driver” in boosting operating profit last year. Accumulated UHP segment sales accounted for 26.5 per cent of Hankook Tire’s entire global sales; UHP tyre sales rose 3.4 per cent year-on-year, growth led by the Chinese and European markets, where accumulated UHP tyre sales rose 13.6 per cent and 12.9 per cent year-on-year respectively.

Official opening held for Conti’s Sumter tyre plant

Continental Tire the Americas has thanked “everyone who came from near and far and braved the weather” to attend the opening of its Sumter factory in South Carolina. Despite the arrival of an Arctic cold front, on 28 January several hundred guests, including Germany’s Ambassador to the US and South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, attended the facility’s official inauguration.

Continental gains Golf, Beetle, CC approvals from VW

Volkswagen has approved Continental summer tyres for original equipment fitment on three of its models – 15 and 16-inch versions of the ContiEcoContact 5 and ContiPremiumContact 5 will be fitted to the Golf 7, the CC receives a 17-inch rim diameter version of the ContiSportContact 5 and ContiEcoContact 5, while the car maker says that the Beetle will be fitted with the 20-inch ContiSportContact 5.

Yokohama merges Japanese retreading operations

In order to strengthen its Japanese-market retreading activities and meet an anticipated increase in demand for retreaded tyres, on 1 January 2014 Yokohama Rubber integrated its two domestic retreading businesses into a single entity. The new Japanese retreading company is called Yokohama Tire Retread Co., Ltd. and sees Sanyo Retread Co., Ltd. merged into the larger Yokohama Tire East Japan Retread Co., Ltd. operation. Atao Kishi, former head of Yokohama Rubber’s commercial tyre development division, has been named the new operation’s president.

Iranian tyre manufacturers optimistic about export future as sanctions ease

As Iranian business envoys court representatives of the various global markets at the 2014 World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, details of the country’s recent tyre market development have also emerged. Of course, the Iranian enterprise bigwigs have been intent on smoozing with the self-styled “masters of the universe” in order to make business in-roads now that certain automotive and petrochemical economic sanctions have been lifted by the west. During a recent interview with the BBC one such envoy described Iran as a very developed and highly educated market poised for further development, but it also has to be said that the geo-political environment makes things complex.

Lassa signs sponsorship deal with Germany’s HSV

In addition to participating in an advertising arrangement with England’s Premier League, Lassa Tyres has engaged in football sponsorship in Germany for a number of years. The Turkish tyre maker partnered with Borussia Mönchengladbach for the 2011/12 and 2012/13 seasons, and now it has signed a new agreement with Hamburg-based club HSV. Lassa says it found a partnership with Hamburger SV attractive as the club is one of Germany’s oldest, most famous and successful football teams, and has the unique distinction of having played continuously in the Bundesliga since its foundation.

April 2014 start for Yokohama’s 2nd Chinese PCR plant

In summer 2013, Yokohama Rubber began building a passenger car tyre factory in China’s Jiangsu Province, the company shared today. The new plant is being erected adjacent to a truck and bus tyre factory operated by Chinese subsidiary Suzhou Yokohama Tire Co., Ltd., and is expected to begin production in April 2014. Production capacity will grow incrementally until it reaches six million tyres per annum by the end of 2017. Total investment in the plant will amount to approximately ¥26.5 billion (£153.7 million).

Goodyear unveils ‘first’ fuel efficiency A-grade steer truck tyre

Goodyear has made its new Fuelmax truck tyre available on European markets, including a steer size that the manufacturer believes to be the first with an A-grade for fuel efficiency on the EU tyre label. The new product was launched last year as the commercial line tuned towards better fuel efficiency – the other newly launched product, the Kmax, is likewise tuned towards longevity.

Firestone ‘pivotal’ for Bridgestone in 2014

Bridgestone has revealed its plan to increase the prominence of its Firestone brand in the UK passenger car tyre market during summer 2014. The manufacturer says its marketing drive will link the Firestone badge explicitly to its lengthy history in motorsport, and Bridgestone is hoping that this renewed effort will put its mid-range brand in a position to offer a compelling proposition to motorists and dealers alongside Bridgestone’s premium offering. In addition, the company will launch the new Firestone Destination 4×4 tyre in June to coincide with the concerted effort to increase awareness and sales through a variety of campaigns.
