Cabot launches 2 new ‘Propel’ Carbon Blacks for use in tyre treads

Cabot Corporation has launched two new carbon black products for tyre tread applications. According to the company, Propel E7 carbon black is engineered to reduce tyre rolling resistance and improve vehicle fuel economy. Propel D11 carbon black is designed to provide a high level of tread durability and is purposed for use in both short-haul truck and off-the-road vehicle tyres. Cabot has been showcasing the new products at Tire Technology Expo 2014 in Cologne, Germany.

Conti launches WinterContact TS 850 P winter tyre in Austrian alps

Last month Tyres & Accessories published an exclusive preview of the 2014 additions to Continental’s mid-European and Nordic winter tyre stables. The central story was that Conti has launched the new Continental WinterContact TS 850 P. In addition T&A also got the opportunity to experience the performance of the new product’s 4x4 variant, the WinterContact TS 830 P SUV. Key facts includes that the TS 850 P outperforms its predecessor both dry road snow handling and braking. The products also raise the label scores from EC to CC territory. Both tyres will be available from the Autumn.

David Cameron to “look carefully” at options for retaining Dunlop production

Goodyear Dunlop says it is “not possible” to retain motorsport tyre production at its current UK location, and therefore this will transfer to plants in France (Montlucon) and Germany (Hanau) later in the year. Nevertheless, upon urging from MP for Erdington Jack Dromey on 5 February, the Prime Minister indicated he’d investigate the matter more closely. He told the House of Commons that I am happy to look carefully at it and see what can be done” in order to “get a good outcome.”

Transense reports first profits

Transense Technologies, which develops RFID and TPMS systems, reported its first profits of £20,000 (EBITDA) for the first half of the current financial year, ended 31 December. The figures are still comparatively small, but the company hopes its progress is now entering growth territory.

Mexico tyre market grew at 19% CAGR 2009-2012

Tyre market revenues in Mexico grew at around 19 per cent compound annual growth rate (CAGR) between 2009 and 2012, according to a report published by Research and Markets.

The combination of Mexico’s relatively cheap skilled labour, proximity to the United States, membership of NAFTA and 12 free trade agreements with world’s growing economies such as EU, Japan, Canada, and the United States, are said to have made the country “an ideal production centre for automobiles and components”. However the report also suggests that the automobile population in Mexico is underperforming with only 275 cars per 1,000 people as of 2012.

Pirelli enjoying ongoing success with Angel GT

High on the programme for Pirelli UK this year is to capitalise on the Angel GT’s selection as ‘tyre of the year’ by Britain’s largest motorcycle publication, Motorcycle News. Pirelli is promoting the accolade via its dealers and directly to customers by various means. This coverage will build on the strong promotion the sports tyre will gain through on and off-track advertising connected with the MCE British Superbike Championship (BSB) and through Pirelli’s global Facebook pages. Motorcycle News’ choice for tyre of the year was announced last September.

Hakkapeliitta 8 SUV – Nokian’s tyre for ‘genuine’ winter conditions

Nokian Tyres reports the use of ‘military-grade materials’ in its latest winter SUV tyre; by this it means aramid, which is present in the sidewall and provides the Hakkapeliitta 8 SUV additional protection against impact damage. The new tyre also utilises what the tyre maker says is the “most modern stud technology in the business”; Nokian says the end result is a tyre that offers “maximum peace of mind to drivers who can now completely enjoy the performance of their sports utility vehicles.” The Hakkapeliitta 8 SUV is designed for larger 4×4 and SUV vehicles.

Michelin launches classic tyre website

On 1 February, Michelin took the wraps off a reference tool that targets classic car fans and industry professionals. The tyre maker says its new www.michelinclassic.com website is unique in Europe; rather than merely inaugurating a conventional website to provide tyre information for historic vehicles, Michelin says it is introducing a “complete” global service, from Michelin expert advice right the way through to online sales.

Pirelli share price spikes, eases back on acquisition rumour

The trading price of shares in Pirelli & C. SpA jumped to €12.96 late on 29 January after financial website FT Alphaville published information from “usually well-informed sources” about manoeuvres to change the company’s ownership structure. The release of a statement from Pirelli chairman and CEO Marco Tronchetti Provera denying any deal ensured the descent from this peak, however, and by 11:00am GMT today the share price had declined 7.3 per cent from this high to €12.01.

CV Show 2014 hosting 14 tyre suppliers

The CV Show’s organisers are gearing up for the 2014 event, but promoting its cooperation with a number of leading tyre suppliers. The idea seems to be to pitch to fleet operators and owner drivers alike, explaining that the show recognises the role tyre choice and maintenance cost plays in dictating profits. That’s why – the organisers say – this year’s show features 14 different suppliers to this “essential sector of the road transport industry”.
