Yokohama inaugurates first plant in India

On 22 February, the official opening ceremony for Yokohama India’s Bahadurgarh plant was held in the presence of regional and company dignitaries. Trial production has already begun at the plant ahead of a start of commercial manufacture in the second half of this year.

Conti dandelion rubber nominated for GreenTech award

Together with the Fraunhofer Institute for Molecular Biology and Applied Ecology (IME), Continental has gained a nomination at the GreenTec Awards 2014 for the joint “Rubin” project. The project, which focuses on the industrialisation of rubber sourced from dandelions, is one of three nominees in the ‘Automobility’ category, one of 14 awards categories. On 25 February, the awards jury will decide on the podium positions for the three finalists in each category, and the awards will be given out on 4 May at the start of IFAT, the world’s leading trade fair for water, sewage, waste, and raw materials management.

Bridgestone launches Blizzak LM001 compact to mid-sized car winter tyre

Bridgestone has launched its new Blizzack LM001 winter tyre for small to mid-sized cars in an event at its Swedish Proving Ground in Vidsel, less than 100km from the Arctic Circle. Following on from the introduction of its Blizzack LM-32 winter tyre for higher performance cars in August 2013, the tyre is designed to improve snow and wet performance, as well as in longevity.

Michelin offers €1 million for new Le Mans benchmark

As announced in June 2013, Michelin will debut a new competition at this year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans. The Michelin Total Performance Award aims to speed up innovation both in relation to racetrack performance and sustainable mobility – and offers €1 million as incentive. The grant will be awarded to the first team that succeeds in fulfilling five criteria relating to performance, longevity and energy efficiency. When these five conditions are met, the million will be ploughed into the financing of research into sustainable mobility by an independent academic institute.

Yokohama 2013 net income climbs 7.3%

Net sales, operating income and net income at Yokohama Rubber rose to record levels during the 2013 financial year, the company reports. It says this performance mainly reflected a tyre business recovery in North America and China along with strong winter tyre sales in the Japanese market. Net income increased 7.3 per cent over the previous year to ¥35.0 billion (£206.0 million), on a 14.0 per cent increase in operating income, to ¥56.6 billion (£333.1 million) and a 7.5 per cent increase in net sales, to ¥601.6 billion (£3.5 billion).

Indirect TPMS attractive for volume car models – strong European, North American growth expected in 2014

Come November, every new car and light commercial vehicle sold in the European Union will need to have a tyre pressure monitoring system, making the region the second behind the US to make TPMS fitment mandatory. The question vehicle manufacturers must answer is which type of TPMS is best for them. While direct TPMS systems have enjoyed a lot of attention since the first phase of the ECE R64 legislation came into force in November 2012, one indirect TPMS manufacturer expresses confidence in a growing presence in the high-volume market.

Goodyear ending Sumitomo alliance due to “anti-competitive” behaviour

At the tail-end of Goodyear's full-year 2013 results conference call, Laura Thompson (executive vice-president and CFO) appeared to suggest that the key reason Goodyear has opted to end its global alliance with Sumitomo is because the Japanese firm has engaged in alleged “anti-competitive” behaviour: “Sumitomo has engaged in anti-competitive conduct in relation to anti-trust laws and we think that warrants a dissolution of the partnership. On January 10 we began arbitration to dissolve the partnership.” As a result the American company could be poised to buy out Sumitomo's joint venture shares.

Goodyear reports 27% increase in 2013 operating income

Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. has reported full-year 2013 annual sales of US$19.5 billion, down 7 per cent from 2012. However, operating income was up 27 per cent compared with 2012 at $1.6 billion. Reference to the news that Sumitomo and Goodyear are looking to end their international joint ventures were noticeable by their absence from the official results reports. The company reported that it generated more than $1 billion of free cash flow from operations, resulting from higher net income and a $415 million benefit from working capital.

Goodyear wants to end Sumitomo Rubber tyre joint venture

Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. Ltd has asked Sumitomo Rubber Industries Ltd. to end the two companies’ tyre joint venture in Europe and alliances in Japan and the US. According to a report published by the Kyodo news agency and reproduced by numerous sources online, the increasing influence of emerging economies (as opposed to the mature markets in the cooperation) is behind the move. A Japanese language statement on Sumitomo's corporate website appears to confirm the report. Tyres & Accessories is seeking further confirmation and comment on this breaking news and will publish additional details as they become available.

A double win for Conti at TTI Awards

The winners of the Tire Technology International Awards for Innovation and Excellence 2014 have been announced, and Continental has walked away with awards in two of the five regular categories. In addition to being named Tire Manufacturer of the Year, the German firm was recipient of the Tire Manufacturing Innovation of the Year award for its ContiLifeCycle facility in Hannover. Other winners included Bridgestone, VMI and Sumitomo Rubber Industries. The awards were presented at a gala dinner held during this week’s Tire Technology Expo in Cologne.

Michelin FY2013 net profits down 28 per cent…

Michelin has reported full year 2013 net sales of 20.247 billion euros, down 5.7 per cent (or 1.2 billion euros) on last year. Meanwhile operating income was fell roughly 10 per cent to 2.234 billion euros and net income plummeted some 23 per cent to 1.127 billion euros. According to Dow Jones analysts’ consensus was that this figure would fall less – by 22.0 per cent, and operating profit to retreat by 5.8 per cent.
