Yokohama partners with Russian aviation show

Yokohama Russia L.L.C., the Russian tyre sales subsidiary of Japan’s Yokohama Rubber, will serve as an official partner and sponsor of the International Aviation and Space Salon (MAKS) 2015, which begins today (and opens to the public on 28 August) in the Russian city of Zhukovsky, near Moscow. Yokohama Rubber believes its participation as an official partner and sponsor of MAKS, one of the world’s largest aviation shows, will further advance the brand recognition of Yokohama tyres.

Video: Toyo sets sights on ‘surprising the world’ with drifting team

Toyo has unveiled a new YouTube video highlighting its UHP Proxes brand. Featuring two Audi R8 supercars equipped with Toyo’s flagship brand tyres driven by Team Toyo Tires Drift drivers Masato Kawabata and Akinori Utsumi in a variety of close team-drifting manoeuvres, the manufacturer titles the video, ‘Surprising the World’, saying it will “exceed the expectations of any car enthusiast.”

Evo tyre test – another win for Continental

Recent ads from Continental cockily ask ‘Who says you can’t win them all?’ The tyre maker raises a fair point – it has enjoyed a good run of test victories in recent times, with its ContiPremiumContact 5 topping the ADAC and Auto Bild tyre tests in Germany and the ContiSportContact 5 claiming victory in this year’s auto motor und sport summer tyre test. Here in the UK, the ContiSportContact 5 was named top tyre in the recent Auto Express test of 11 size 225/45R17 tyres, and now evo magazine has named the ContiSportContact 5 winner of its summer tyre test – for the second year in a row.

Yokohama Tire returns as LPGA Classic golf tournament title sponsor

Yokohama Tire Corporation (YTC) is ready to go golfing again. For the second consecutive year, the tyre maker’s US North American manufacturing and marketing operation is teaming up with the Robert Trent Jones (RTJ) Golf Trail and the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) to host the Yokohama Tire LPGA Classic. The 2015 tournament will be held between 27 and 30 August in the charming town of Prattville, Alabama. Defending champion Mi Jung Hur is expected to return, along with other top players from last year’s field, including Stacy Lewis, Brittany Lincicome, Cristie Kerr, Morgan Pressel, Chella Choi and Ai Miyazato.

Goodyear-LSE study into driving personalities identifies dangerous traits

A joint, ongoing study on the social psychology of road safety conducted by Goodyear and the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) has identified different ways that people respond when interacting with other drivers on the road. The information gained so far comes from the first stage of a two-part study into driving behaviour. LSE researchers worked with focus groups and conducted in-depth interviews to identify how drivers influence each other’s behaviour on the road.

Pirelli to supply soft, medium compounds at Spa for Belgian grand prix

Pirelli has nominated the most versatile tyres in its range, the P Zero White medium and P Zero Yellow soft, to combat the Belgian grand prix’s fast Spa circuit. Supplying the same tyre nomination for Spa as it did for the Hungaroring, despite the differences in the two tracks, shows the range provided by Pirelli’s middle two Formula One P Zero compounds. Motorsport director Paul Hembery comments that the “two circuits present a very marked contrast.

World RX tyre supplier goes to Hell with 47 Supercar entries

After passing the midway point of the season for the 2015 FIA World Rallycross Championship, tyre supplier Cooper says the competition is heating up in Hell, Norway, with just six rounds to go. A record number of 47 Supercars will be on the grid in Norway, accompanied by 12 RX Lites competitors, all running on Cooper’s rallycross tyres which are specifically designed for the very unique demands of rallycross – a fusion of gravel and asphalt racing.

US releases report on Chinese tyre tariffs

The full report on the circumstances and arguments behind the decision to approve antidumping and countervailing duties against passenger car and light commercial vehicles tyres from China has been published by the US International Trade Commission. Stop the Crash – Continental partners with Global NCAP campaign

Tyre maker and automotive systems supplier Continental is to serve as a key partner to a four-year global campaign being rolled out to promote awareness of leading vehicle crash avoidance technologies in major emerging markets. The firm’s Tire and Chassis & Safety divisions are supporting the ‘Stop the Crash’ initiative organised by Global NCAP (Global New Car Assessment Programme), the London-based umbrella body of the NCAP organisations that carry out vehicle safety tests around the world. The company also states it will more closely position its Continental tyre brand to the campaign’s long-term goals.

All-new policy?

On the one hand, a steadily growing economy and healthily increasing commercial vehicle registrations figures appear to point to a bright future for the UK truck tyre segment. However, on the other hand, the situation is complicated by the increasing imports of low-cost and often un-reported Chinese tyre imports – something that is particularly affecting both current and future retread sales, owing to these products’ lack of retreadability.

KRT reports 20% increase in budget truck tyre sales

Kings Road Tyres (KRT), one of the largest specialist distributors of truck tyres in the UK, has reported substantial growth in sales of its budget ranges of TBR fitments, with volumes up 20 per cent year-on-year.
