Then there were four – staying mobile minus the spare

If you’ve needed to change a tyre lately, you may have been confronted by a space saver in the boot – or no spare tyre at all. Pressure to reduce vehicle weight, combined with increasing tyre reliability and a growing reluctance (or inability) amongst motorists to actually change a flat tyre, has seen the number of new cars equipped with a full-size spare fall dramatically in the past few years. Previewing a new market research report during last month’s Tire Technology Expo conference, Notch Consulting Inc president Paul Ita noted that while 68 per cent of cars produced in 2008 came with full-size spares, this number had slid to 48 per cent four years later, and he projects that by 2017 only 41 per cent of new cars will still be sold with a full-size spare.

‘Increased performance gap’ between Pirelli F1 compounds

Following the conclusion of Formula Ones three preseason tests in Bahrain, Pirelli has stated that the characteristics of the 2014 P Zero tyre range were in line with expectations, maintaining similar performance to last year but with less degradation. Pirelli said there had been no blistering and very little graining, while also claiming a reduction in tread wear levels. The results of the final test also showed an increased performance gap between both the hard and the medium compound, and the medium and the soft compound: the two combinations of tyres that will be used at the first four races. Pirelli said this would give plenty of scope for the teams to formulate interesting strategies to boost their race prospects.

Goodyear EfficientGrip SUV tyre aims to offer grip and low rolling resistance

Targeted at vehicles such as the Audi Q3 or the Land Rover Evoque, the EfficientGrip SUV tyre is designed to be something of jack of all trades. As Goodyear points out, while a performance road tyre only really has to concentrate on the task of gripping the road and off-road tyres with the job of generating as much traction in mud as possible, a modern SUV is a jack of all trades and needs a tyre that’s equally broad in its talents.
