Continental profits markedly up in Q1 2014

In the first quarter of this year, sales at Continental Corporation increased 4.4 per cent to €8.39 billion, while net income attributable to shareholders of the parent rose 33.3 per cent to €588.3 million, or €2.94 per share. This jump in profits prompted CEO Dr. Elmar Degenhart to comment that the tyre and automotive systems manufacturer is “very capable of combining our growth with value creation.” EBIT rose by almost 21 per cent year-on-year to €903 million as at March 31. This corresponds to a margin of 10.8 per cent, after 9.3 per cent in the previous year. Adjusted EBIT for the first quarter climbed by 19.7 per cent year-on-year to €953 million in the first quarter. The adjusted EBIT margin was 11.4 per cent.

New Adventure Travel switches to Michelin

Coach and bus operator New Adventure Travel has taken up a predominantly Michelin tyre policy following trials that suggested it could double the lifespan of its existing tyres. The Cardiff-based firm has moved to fitting predominantly 245/70 R 19.5 and 265/70 R19.5 Michelin XZE2+ tyres on its service buses and 315/80 R 22.5 X MultiWay 3D XZEs on its coaches.

Gaither launches new mounting system

Gaither Europe will exhibit its latest garage tools from Reifen 2014’s Hall 1 Stand 1C25. While previous years have featured the eye and ear-catching presence of new models of the Bead Bazooka, Gaither will come to Reifen having just launched its latest assistive mounting system.

TecRMI expands TPMS technical data

Tyre Pressure Monitoring Systems will become a legal requirement on new vehicles on 1 November. From the moment this change in legislation is implemented, increased data requirements in garages have warranted preparations now for automotive systems providers. The specialist repair and maintenance information arm of TecAlliance, TecRMI is expanding its technical data to include information concerning tyre pressure sensors for active and passive TPMS applications.

Falken Tyre Europe to present widest ever product range at Reifen 2014

Sumitomo tyre brand Falken’s European team will present its largest and most diverse range of road tyres ever, highlighting its recent innovations in product development technology. Highlights from the range – encompassing car, SUV and commercial vehicle tyres – will include the first public presentation of both the new Azenis FK453 Run-Flat tyre and energy efficient Sincera SN832 EcoRun tyre, launched at Ascari in spring 2014.

Vacu-Lug’s Alan Setchfield retires after 48-year career with retreader

After almost half a century with Vacu-Lug, Alan Setchfield is retiring. Having begun his career as a yard boy in Grantham’s already long established tyre remoulding plant on 2 May 1966, aged 17, Setchfield can look back on a 48-year career, rising through the company. “I’ve enjoyed the journey and made many friends along the way,” he said, “But don’t worry, there’s plenty of tread left on this tyre for many miles to come!”

Cooper Q1 revenue, operating profit down year-on-year

As Cooper Tire & Rubber enters its centennial year, the US tyre maker has reported first quarter operating profit slightly below the record result achieved last year. On the back of net sales of US$796 million, 7.5 per cent lower than a year earlier, Cooper achieved a quarter operating profit of $81 million, 16.5 per cent down on the first quarter 2013 operating profit, which was the highest ever in the company’s 100-year history. Operating profit was 10.2 per cent of net sales. The company reported net income attributable to Cooper Tire & Rubber Company of $0.71 per share, or $45 million, in the first quarter. This compares with $56 million, or $0.87 per share, for the same period last year.

Slight dip for Hankook in Q1 2014

Revenue and operating profit at Hankook Tire was marginally lower year-on-year in the first quarter of 2014, the company reported on 30 April. Global sales revenue amounted to KRW 1.675 trillion (£958.9 million) between 1 January and 31 March, 0.3 per cent lower than the revenue achieved in the first quarter of 2013. Operating profit in Q1 2014 was KRW 260.1 billion (£148.9 million), 0.7 per cent less than a year earlier. Operating profit to sales ratio was 15.5 per cent.

Bridgestone exiting MotoGP after 2015 season

After what will be fourteen years of involvement, Bridgestone will end its MotoGP tyre supply at the end of the 2015 season. Series organiser Dorna has agreed to extend Bridgestone’s current supply contract, which was due to expire after the current season, for one year, and the company says this will then be its final season as tyre supplier. As was the case when it reported in 2009 its intention to wrap up supply to Formula One, the tyre maker links its decision to cease MotoGP supply to a fulfillment of the objectives it set out for itself in the championship.

Dunlop continues Isle of Man TT with Official Tyre Partner status

Dunlop will be the ‘Official Tyre Partner’ of the 2014 Isle of Man TT races, having signed a new multi-year deal. The tyre brand has competed in all but two years of the championship since its first in 1907. John McGuinness and Joey Dunlop are among the many riders to have shod their bikes with Dunlop tyres, and the manufacturer has claimed more TT wins than any other tyre brand.

Michelin previews new trailer tyre at CV Show

Michelin returned to Birmingham’s CV Show today with a global preview of the new X Multi T super single in size 385/65R22.5. Designed for a range of commercial vehicle applications with M+S markings, the tyre is labelled B-B-69dB), with longevity increased by around 10 per cent according to the manufacturer.

Continental OE on MAN trucks and buses

As of May 2014, a number of Continental truck and bus tyres will be fitted to MAN vehicles as original equipment. The steer axle Conti EcoPlus HS3 and drive axle Conti EcoPlus HD3 in sizes 315/70R22.5 and 315/70R22.5 XL are the first sizes to be approved by MAN Truck & Bus. The company has also selected Continental bus tyres for fitment to its MAN and Neoplan brands; three versions of the Conti Coach HA3, including an ‘ED’ (Extra Duty) version developed for use on demanding roads, will be supplied as original equipment.

23 million part worns sold since 2009

The latest research suggests that as many as 5.6 million part worn tyres have been sold in the UK each year since 2009. The ICM poll, which was commissioned by insurance firm Liverpool Victoria (otherwise known as LV) and published on 10 April found that 1.5 million motorists have bought “sub-standard second hand tyres” since 2009 and that a total of 23 million part worns have been sold in the UK since then.
