First Pirelli AA tyre gains Autobild plaudits

Pirelli’s Cinturato P7 Blue was unveiled to the tyre business at Reifen 2012, where a 17” size claimed the honour of becoming the first EU label rated AA product on the market. In a recent Autobild test of eight ecological summer tyres it was rated “exemplary” by the respected consumer automotive monthly.

Point S launches new web site

Point S has unveiled a brand new web site (point-s.co.uk) which offers additional benefits to members and is designed to make it quicker and easier for motorists to book a tyre change online.

Developed in response to members’ feedback about the previous version, the new Point S website is designed to offer a simpler, more user-friendly layout. Developing range a Lassa priority

Hybrids a focus for Continental’s first A/A rated tyre

It isn’t easy to achieve an A/A rating on the European tyre label, at least not if you appraise tyre performance according to the guidelines, but Continental has managed it with the all-new Conti.eContact. The latest generation of tyre to carry this name is initially available in six sizes for 17 and 18-inch rims as a replacement fitment for the European market. Low volume production has begun at Continental’s Sarreguemines tyre plant in France.

Vacu-Lug supplies steelworks

Vacu-Lug is supplying Kress Slab Carriers, which make up the heavy end of its customer’s 70-strong vehicle fleet operating from a steel works in Wales. Operating around the clock, the Kress Carriers transport steel slabs within the steel production plant which, together with its sister plant, elsewhere in Wales is capable of producing upwards of 5 million tonnes of steel slab per annum.

According to the company, the Kress Carriers are fitted with front, 37.25-35 and rear, 4000 x57 Yokohama tyres, each of which is supported by a ‘cradle-to-grave’ inspection and reporting process carried out by Vacu-Lug.

Goodyear EfficientGrip Dunlop BluResponse tyre are Which? Best Buys

Goodyear Dunlop is celebrating two Which? Best Buy recommendations after its Goodyear EfficientGrip Performance and Dunlop Sport BluResponse, in size 195/65 R15 V, each received the endorsement.

The Goodyear EfficientGrip Performance was one of the most highly rated tyres, with its wet handling, dry and wet braking and fuel economy being particularly commended.

The Dunlop Sport BluResponse was recognised for its wet and dry handling, fuel economy and particularly braking in the dry, stopping a full 7.5 metres before the worst tyre in the test.

Toyo launches new mid-term business plan

Along with the unveiling of its ‘Vision 2020’ strategic plan that outlined aims leading up to its 100th anniversary, in May 2011 Toyo Tire & Rubber announced its ‘Mid-term 11’ plan that identified goals for the years to 2015. The tyre maker now reports that due to a favourable business climate, including a weakening of the Japanese yen and lower raw material prices, it has met the Mid-term 11 targets – such as boosting supply capacity – ahead of schedule. Toyo has now set itself a new three-year mid-term business plan, titled ‘Mid-term ’14 GO BEYOND’. This latest plan sets this year as a starting point and covers specific targets up to the end of 2016, while looking forward five years to 2018.

Trelleborg promotes radial benefits in Central America

In April, at Chinandega, Nicaragua, Trelleborg presented its radial range of premium agricultural tyres to several important producers in Central America. The event was organised by Emagro, Trelleborg’s distributor for Nicaragua, Panama, Costa Rica and Guatemala, and generated considerable interest and positive feedback.

E-commerce comes of age

It seems 2014 could be the year that tyre e-commerce hits maturity. It doesn’t seem that long ago that the NTDA published research showing that the number one method of ordering was phone and – wait for it – fax. Internet was a minority method, but e-mail (a medium of communication that is buckling under the pressure of increased demand for more and faster contacts) was showing some signs of growth. In fact it was November 2005, and therefore will soon be a decade ago. In 2014, virtually every significant wholesale and direct distribution operation is supported by a sophisticated online ordering system that is simply backed by other methods of communication.

Despite challenging environment, JK Tyre posts higher full-year profits

JK Tyre & Industries reports a 29 per cent year-on-year increase in net profit for its 2013-14 financial year. During the 12-month period between 1 April 2013 and 31 March 2014, the Indian tyre maker achieved turnover of Rs 82.8 billion (£833.7 million), nine per cent higher than in the prior financial year. Operating profit was up 41 per cent to Rs 8.9 billion (£89.6 million) while pre-tax profit grew 42 per cent to Rs 3.5 billion (£34.9 million). The 29 per cent expansion in the company’s bottom line brought net profit to Rs 2.6 billion (£26.5 million). The company has announced a 50 per cent equity share dividend.

Official opening of Ceat JV plant draws near

The latest joint venture plant set up by India’s RPG Group and Sri Lanka’s Kelani Tyre will officially open next week, states Sri Lanka’s Daily Mirror. The publication says the Rs 600 million (£2.7 million) passenger car tyre radial factory, which is located at the existing Ceat Kelani site in Kelaniya, will enable the joint venture operation to increase its radial capacity by 70 per cent to 39,000 tyres a month.
