Pirelli confirmed for three more Superbike seasons

It has already served as official tyre supplier to the FIM Superbike World Championship for a decade, and Pirelli’s technical partnership with the series has now been confirmed for a further three years after winning the tender organised by promoter Dorna in agreement with FIM, the International Motorcycling Federation. Pirelli will thus continue as sole tyre supplier for all Superbike World Championship classes until the end of the 2018 season, and the tyre maker views the longevity of its relationship with Superbike as vindication of its initially controversial support for a single-supplier solution.

Trelleborg Wheel Systems outlines route to global agricultural tyre leadership

The agricultural tyre market appears particularly well suited towards specialised manufacturers; Trelleborg Wheel Systems acquired Pirelli’s agricultural business in 1999, with the branding switched between 2006 and 2010. Since acquiring various technologies from Pirelli, the Trelleborg Group has invested heavily in order to make its tyre and wheel operation a premium brand player in the agricultural and forestry tyre market. The Tivoli facility, with its buildings showing a manufacturing history dating back to the 1940s, but also incorporating the latest agricultural tyre building machinery, represents “a history full of innovation for farming professionals,” in president of the Agricultural and Forestry Tyres business unit, Paolo Pompei’s words.

Low degradation helps Hamilton dominate in Monza

Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton claimed victory in Monza, using the popular one-stop strategy, the race method predicted as dominant prior to the race by tyre supplier Pirelli. The manufacturer’s home race – it is held half an hour’s drive from the company’s HQ in Milan – saw all of the top 10 finishers using similar tactics to Hamilton, as low wear and degradation of both compounds made the approach almost obligatory.

European Commission says Hungary to host Apollo’s new tyre plant, endorses proposed investment

Apollo Tyres hasn’t officially announced where its planned European factory will be built, but it looks as if the honour has gone to Hungary. Today the European Commission confirmed that a proposal to give Apollo Tyres (Hungary) Kft. €95.7 million (approximately HUF 29 billion) in regional investment aid for the construction of a tyre plant in Gyöngyöshalász is in line with European Union state aid rules. Kumho Tyre launches new customer-facing website

Kumho Tyre’s new customer-facing corporate website has been launched. The new site focuses on providing a better browsing experience for those visiting on mobile devices, an approach the tyre manufacturer calls a “mobile first, fully responsive perspective”. As a result of this responsive design, the site adapts automatically to suit the size of the user’s screen. Kumho claims this resulted in a 50 per cent increase in the amount of mobile traffic to the website in its first week, with early feedback saying 96 per cent of visitors “would recommend” the site, from 1,000 unique surveys. The site’s usability and design attractiveness have also been rated at least “good” by more than 98 per cent of respondents.

No tyre making comeback for Goodyear’s home town

Goodyear has confirmed what many must have already realised – tyre makers build factories in economically favourable sites. The US doesn’t top any list of low-cost locations, and therefore the bid its home town launched to host a new factory planned for the Americas was always going to be a long shot. Akron City Council nevertheless declared itself “willing to do what it takes” to host the new plant – but its hopes have now been dashed by Goodyear’s chief financial officer, who has sent word that Akron – where Goodyear last produced car tyres in 1977 – is considered too costly.

Bridgestone staying strong in a growing truck tyre market

The good news is that with demand up and with the company selling as big a proportion of retreads as ever, Bridgestone’s UK truck tyre business remains a key player in the UK truck tyre market. In the Republic of Ireland things are even better. However, premium manufacturers like Bridgestone have also seen the rise in the prominence of lower cost alternatives in recent years. While companies like Bridgestone continue to occupy leading positions when it comes to blue-chip and other national fleets, the wider context brings new challenges with it, especially when it comes to countering volume versus value strategies. Tyres & Accessories spoke with Bridgestone UK commercial director Greg Ward in order to find out more.

Wheels of change?

The recession had a disproportionately large impact on the haulage industry. With many firms going to the wall and others trimming their fleets right back and running their tyres to death, this all had a similarly big impact on the truck tyre business too. Back in 2009 Tyres & Accessories observed that the combination of shrunken demand and aggressive competition from up-and-coming manufacturers (namely Hankook at that time) really shook the market up. Five years later, comparing the market then and now reveals that this “shake-up” trajectory continues well into the new decade, with both Hankook and Giti occupying significant market share positions that simply were not feasibly early in the new millennium.
