First graduates from Michelin’s Tyre Academy

Nine tyre fitters from dealers across the UK and Ireland have become the first to graduate from Michelin’s Tyre Academy after a year of theoretical and practical learning.

The fitters, who each work in a different Michelin Certified Centre (MCC), were chosen for the course as they have the potential to become an expert technician or take on management positions in the future.

Paul Malin confirmed for Bridgestone Apex Motocross event

Bridgestone says it is “ramping up its plans to make 2015 a year to remember in the world of motocross” after securing the services of a multiple British champion to promote its tyre range. Paul Malin will add his presence to Bridgestone’s day of riding at Apex Motocross in Worcester on 19 February, which will showcase the brand’s X30 and X40 motocross tyres. Seven-time Dakar Rally competitor Mick Extance will also get to grips with the tyres during a day that promises to be one of the biggest and most comprehensive motocross events ever organised by Bridgestone.

Reifen Müller makes millionth Ringtread Blackline

Marangoni Retreading Systems Deutschland GmbH is congratulating Reifen Müller from Hammelburg for making its millionth tyre, a Ringtread Blackline retread.

In peak season, Reifen Müller’s Hammelburg factory turns out around 350 tyres a day. With Ringtread technology, the plant can produce 200 retreads in each 8 hour shift. The high level of automation offers high productivity, savings in labour and faster processing times. The RB 3000 is a completely automatic machine, in which the cushion gum is applied directly onto the casing.

TPMS now standard on all new vehicles

2015 represents the first full year of both mandatory TPMS on new vehicles and system functionality tests as part of MOT tests at the aftermarket end of the spectrum. And according to those in the TPMS sector, this new legislation has brought new confidence to the TPMS market. Tyresure reports that most multisite UK operations now boast some knowledge of this new technology. Many tyre bays are turning their attention to the sales opportunities that servicing TPMS sensors brings.

Translogik aiming to significantly increase sales volume with new product

At the end of 2014, with news of the launch of the new Opti-Tread system for passenger car tyre auditing still fresh, Tyres & Accessories visited Translogik CEO Laren Yeomans at the company’s new Oxfordshire offices in order to find out more about the new product and how it fits into Translogik’s wider strategy.

But first a little background. Translogik is the Tyre Management Solutions division of Transense Technologies PLC, a firm specialising in the development of Surface Acoustic Wave (SAW) sensors and related technologies. The Transense Group is comprised of three divisions. IntelliSAW, based in Boston, USA, specialises in wireless temperature measurement used in various industrial applications, SAWSense, the firm’s research & development and technology transfer operation; and Translogik – the part of the business we were in Oxford to learn more about.

Michelin partners in Spanish wholesale joint venture

At around the same time that Michelin moved to acquire 100 per cent of German tyre wholesaler Ihle Baden-Baden, the company gained approval to enter the Spanish wholesale market. On 12 September 2014, the Spanish National Authority for Markets and Competition (Comisión Nacional de los Mercados y la Competencia) gave its approval for Euromaster Automoción y Servicios, S.A.U. and Rodi Metro, S.L., which operates the 150+ Rodi Motor Services retail network in Spain, to form a new wholesaling operation to distribute car and light commercial vehicle tyres within the country. Rodi says the wholesale operation has been set up as a 50/50 partnership.

Family affair – Jürgen Titz replaces brother in Goodyear ‘DACH’ role

Former UK and Ireland director of consumer tyres for Goodyear Dunlop, Jürgen Titz, has been appointed head of consumer replacement for the tyre maker’s Germany, Austria and Switzerland, or DACH, region cluster. In his new role, he will coordinate all consumer tyre-related sales and marketing activities in the three German-speaking countries. Titz will also join the management of Goodyear Dunlop Tires Germany, which is led by George Rietbergen. Jürgen Titz succeeds his brother Frank Titz, who as general manager will lead Goodyear’s business in Russia.

Speaking at the signing ceremony of Shandong Linglong Tire’s agreement with German football club VfL Wolfsburg, the tyre maker’s CEO spoke of the “first class exposure” and substantially increased brand awareness the partnership will bring. He also discussed Linglong Tire’s growth ambitions and the role Europe will play in achieving these.

New owner for insolvent Reifen Ihle’s retreading operation

The retreading business belonging to insolvent German tyre company the Reifen Ihle Group now has a new owner. The sales contract was signed late last Friday, and follows the divestment of the firm’s 12 Point S tyre retail centres to regional retailer Reifen Müller at the end of October. R-I-G Technische Produkte GmbH has been acquired by Frankfurt am Main-based holding company Prolimity Capital Partners and will now be operated under a new entity, Rigdon GmbH.

Bridgestone reduces Ryder’s tyre-related call outs by 28%

Having tied up its tyre partnership for the next five years with Bridgestone in April, commercial fleet operator Ryder says that tyre-related breakdowns for its customers have fallen by 28 per cent. The new contract heralded the introduction of a range of initiatives aimed at maximising fleet uptime and lowering running costs, Bridgestone states.

Goodyear Dunlop opens winter test circuit in Finland

Goodyear Dunlop has opened a new winter tyre testing facility, the Arctic Centre, in Ivalo, Finland. Located 300 km north of the Arctic Circle, near the town of Ivalo in North Eastern Finland, the Arctic Centre is one of Europe’s leading winter tyre testing centres, and as of December 2014, will be exclusively used by Goodyear Dunlop. Jean-Pierre Jeusette, general director of Goodyear’s Innovation Centre, Laurent Colantonio, director of global tyre performance prediction and, representing the company‘s Nordic Region, Ludvig Nauckhoff, general manager Nordic were present as the ribbon was cut.

Michelin to cut 10% of Western European dealers from its Exelagri network

In early December, Michelin shared plans to “further develop” its Exelagri dealer partnership programme “with a new vision.” While the French tyre maker aims to increase the size of its 2004-established agricultural tyre dealer network from the current level of 770 partners to 1,000 in the next ten years, Michelin’s plans involve placing much more attention on the growing Eastern European market. In a press statement released in its German-language markets on 3 December, Michelin relayed an intention to boost its Eastern Europe market presence from 38 to 350 points of sale. But the figures Michelin gave also tell another story – if the company achieves the stated ten-year goals, it will involve a considerable reduction in the number of Exelagri partners it has in Western Europe. In response to our questions, Michelin’s headquarters in France explained how and why it intends to divest partners in Western Europe.

RMA proposes tyre registration, TIA ‘disappointed’ in legislative solution


Tire Industry Association has promised to fight a proposal by the US Rubber Manufacturers Association to reinstate a mandatory tyre registration programme, US journal Tire Review reports. During a panel on tyre registration and recalls at the Passenger Vehicle Tire Safety Symposium held by the National Transportation Safety Board, the RMA cited low registration rates of tyres sold by independent retailers as the reason behind the proposal. RMA reported that overall fewer than 20 per cent of all tyres are registered.

Cooper releases new precision challenge football video with Arsenal players

In its role as Arsenal’s official tyre partner, Cooper Tire Europe has produced a video examining the accuracy of five Arsenal players. In the video, Cooper overlays graphics onto the original video, examining the varying styles and techniques as the players tried out the precisions shooting challenge. The five players were Santi Cazorla, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Mesut Ozil, Lukas Podolski and goalkeeper, Wojciech Szczesny.
