91% of garages report rise in expired MOTs

The Retail Motor Industry Federation (RMI) and Scottish Motor Trade Association (SMTA) report that since the end of the paper tax disc, 91.2 per cent of garages have seen an increase in the number of customers bringing cars that have expired MOTs in.

Cinturato Winter: Pirelli aims for summer comfort, winter safety

By the time the cold months are upon us again, Pirelli will have introduced its new Cinturato Winter range. This aftermarket successor to the Snowcontrol Serie 3 is aimed at compact and mid-sized vehicles and, according to the tyre maker, is the beneficiary of a transfer that sees the technological innovations typically found in performance car tyres, especially those related to safety, introduced into standard tyres for medium-sized cars. The result? Upon unveiling the Cinturato Winter in June, Pirelli claimed to have produced a tyre that offers the “driving pleasure and comfort more normally associated with a summer tyre” while simultaneously ensuring “maximum safety under all conditions.”

ATS Euromaster Leeds branch ram-raided

40 tyres have been stolen after the ATS Euromaster branch in Cross Green Lane, Cross Green, Leeds was ram-raided last night (11 July 2016).

Police are appealing for information after the incident which is believed to have taken place at about 10.30. According to West Yorkshire police, the constabulary received reports of a white transit van repeatedly ramming the shutter doors the ATS Euromaster branch “causing significant damage”.

Smithers: carbon black market up 5.4 per cent during last four years

New data produced by Smithers Rapra suggests the carbon black market has grown at an average of 5.4 per cent during the period between 2011 and 2015. As a results demand reached 13 million tons in 2015. To put this figure into context, global demand for carbon black was estimated at 10.7 million tons in 2011 – and this figure is said to represent “a good recovery” from the 15 per cent contraction between 2008 and 2009.

British grand prix strategies ‘out of the window’ following rain: Pirelli

Any tyre strategies planned ahead of the British grand prix at Silverstone were forced to be reconsidered after a torrential rain shower forced the entire grid to start the race behind a safety car on Pirelli’s Cinturato Blue full wet tyre. Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton won for the fourth time at home using three different Pirelli tyre compounds. When the safety car came in after five laps, a number of drivers went straight onto the Cinturato Green intermediate, while the leaders took advantage of a virtual safety car to switch to the intermediate shortly afterwards.

Warehouse expansion at BFGoodrich tyre plant

The warehouse at one of the two Michelin factories fully dedicated to the production of BFGoodrich tyres will more than treble in size through a US$8 million investment. Michelin North America shares that the warehouse of its BFGoodrich factory in Tuscaloosa (Alabama, USA) will increase from 29,000 square feet to 92,000 square feet (8,550 square metres). This expansion will result in a storage capacity more than nine times greater than at present. Construction work on the project begins in August and is expected to be completed early next year, with the enlarged warehouse operational in the second quarter of 2017.

Eckert appointed to promote Davanti in Europe

Michelin highlighting historic ranges at Le Mans Classic

Michelin is participating as a partner to the Le Mans Classic, a biennial event that attracts more than 110,000 historic motorsport and classic car fans and gets underway today at the Circuit de la Sarthe in France. During the four-day event, the tyre maker will present its latest historic motorsport and classic car tyre collection, as well as provide advice to owners of the participating cars, a collection of vehicles that includes numerous cars Michelin has equipped for the Le Mans 24 Hours endurance race over the years.

Silverstone could not be more different to Austria – Pirelli

The British grand prix takes place at Silverstone the weekend after Pirelli’s visit to Austria, but the manufacturer’s tyre selection is an indicator of the different challenges posed by famous circuit. The Formula One tyre supplier will bring its P Zero Orange hard, White medium, and Yellow soft tyres to the UK – its hardest possible tyre selection – the week after supplying its softest selection to teams in Austria. Accordingly, Pirelli states tha the two events “could not be more different.”

Michelin releases details of new Formula E tyre

For the third season of Formula E, Michelin – the series’ tyre partner since its September 2014 inception – will provide a second generation of the Pilot Sport EV tyre. Like the original Pilot Sport EV, whose specifications were inspired by similarities with road tyres, Michelin will see the new version as an opportunity to develop technologies applicable to its consumer product range.

Michelin Pilot Sport EV bows out of Formula E in London season closer

Michelin will supply the Formula E series until at least the 2018/19 season, though its Pilot Sport EV bowed out of competition after the recent 2015/16 season closer at Battersea Park. “The Michelin Pilot Sport EV has revolutionised the role played by tyres in motor racing,” states Serge Grisin, manager of Michelin’s Formula E programme.

Kumho introduces new products, diesel optimisation project

Kumho made Reifen 2016 the occasion of its new UHP winter tyre’s world premiere, in addition to displaying its role in a project to optimise the fuel efficiency of existing diesel technology. The company’s 300sqm stand in Hall 3 also featured the company’s current portfolio of products for a wide variety of tyre segments, including electric and hybrid vehicles.
