An influx of imports is making the car tyre market even more competitive

On 27 January the UK economy registered growth of 2.6 per cent in 2014. Of course it has not been the same across Europe, but with record new car registrations in the UK and 32 consecutive months of growth in that figure, you could be forgiven for asking why the UK tyre market came out as flat according to both the sell-in and sell-out measurements in 2014. At the same time it is important to set all this into its wider European context, something which this month’s analysis of the passenger car tyre market attempts to embark on.

Dropping an OEM ‘nom de plume’ in favour of Mitas Premium

We’ve mentioned in the past that while most farmers and agricultural machinery operators know the tyres Mitas produces, the Mitas name itself often flies under the radar. But the Czech Republic-based tyre maker is doing everything in its power to change this, and as a result the industry has heard the Mitas name a lot of late. Not only has the company released details of its PneuTrac technology (see the May 2014 issue of Tyres & Accessories for more on this) and trials using alternative sources of rubber, it has launched a programme to ensure the agricultural segment realises that the Continental agricultural tyres manufactured and sold over the last decade are in fact Mitas products, and in future will be known as such.

A tale of two markets…

Global markets and tyre markets interact with each other. With economics and indeed the tyre market being more “global” than ever, events in one market are bound to have a greater impact on other markets than ever. And with Europe having experienced its share of political and especially economic instability in the last decade, while...

Strategically the most significant detail about the Cinturato All-Season launch is the fact that a premium manufacturer such as Pirelli is launching an all-season tyre at this time. Other premium manufacturers have such products, but many have opted to focus on summer and winter products, leaving mid-range players and second line brands first in line. In order to find out a little more, Tyres & Accessories spoke to Pirelli senior vice president sales planning and supply chain, Matteo Battaini, during the event.

Nitrogen a solution to lax inflation practices, says Tyre Bay Direct

Just because a tyre looks correctly inflated, it doesn’t mean it necessarily is. I was reminded of this the last time my car’s tyres were treated to a pitifully infrequent air pressure check. But at least I’m in good company when it comes to tyre pressure sloppiness. Tyre Bay Direct shares that a recent roadside survey performed by Sussex Police found 73 per cent of all inspected cars to have tyres at least 5psi above or below their recommended handbook pressure.
