Continental: evo win reiterates our leading position for safety

Last year, Continental celebrated a second consecutive victory for its ContiSportContact 5 in evo magazine’s annual summer tyre test. Since that time the back-to-back winner has been superseded by the SportContact 6, and Continental’s new generation rubber is proving a chip off the old block. Evo’s 2016 test of nine size 235/35 R19 summer tyres finished with the SportContact 6 gaining top points in the dry and wet braking tests, a result that helped it stave off strong competition, including wet handling category winner the Yokohama Advan Sport V105, to secure overall first place.

After three outings on gravel stages, the nine crews will switch to asphalt roads at ADAC Rallye Deutschland where two more prize drives are up for grabs. As the only all-asphalt round of the five-event campaign, and with highly-prized Trophy points up for grabs, it promises to be a captivating encounter. Dmack has also unveiled its latest WRC tarmac tyres, produced in Melksham, UK as part of the brand’s growing relationship with Avon Motorsport.

The full review placed the Yokohama tyre in join-second overall.

Bright adopting ‘open door’ approach at Automechanika 2016

It is no secret that China continues to play its role in the development of the European tyre market. Chinese equipment firm Bright Technology hopes to take this a step further at Automechanika 2016 in Frankfurt, Germany when the company unveils its new double-decker concept booth which will display a “revealing” digital photographic/video tour of the company’s production and design facilities.

Yokohama focused on premium winter performance in all segments

Developed in conjunction with the world’s leading vehicle manufacturers at the company’s winter test track in Sweden, Yokohama offers a comprehensive range of premium winter tyres. Yokohama says its winter tyres are particularly suited to those driving high performance and rear wheel drive cars, enhancing cold weather performance when road conditions vary from cold and damp to being covered in ice. The company adds that it holds an extensive range of its winter tyre stock in its central UK distribution centre – past UK consumer behaviour suggests that winter tyres are in demand only after snow falls, so availability on a next day delivery service could be a key to picking up business.

Strength in numbers: 5 German tyre wholesalers announce cooperation

Regional European tyre wholesalers have faced several tough years, and perhaps none more so than those based in Germany. The level of transparency within this market, strong competition from online operators and low shipping costs have conspired against German tyre wholesalers and devoured turnover. We saw the country’s largest wholesaler, Reifen Ihle Baden Baden, snapped up by Michelin in 2014, and the following year the French tyre manufacturer also acquired another struggling independent wholesaler, Meyer Lissendorf. Business remains tough for independent players, and five regional wholesalers are now joining forces to take advantage of synergies and maximise their chances of survival.

Stapleton’s continues to make case for UK winter tyre market

For a nation so interested in weather that its obsession has become a national cliché, the UK winter tyre market has continued to elude growth, yet this is not preventing wholesaler Stapleton’s from continuing to make the case for winter tyres. The company stocks a range of premium and house brand seasonal fitments, in which it continues to see potential from both a driver safety and dealer profit perspective. Following the UK’s wettest June since records began in 1910, giving us the impression of a very short-lived summer, Stapleton’s suggested that perhaps it won’t be too much of a wrench to turn our thoughts to the coming winter, the challenges it brings for drivers, and the opportunities for tyre retailers that come in the form of winter tyre sales.

Conti: Truck TPMS should be mandatory

As many as one in four truck tyres may be running underinflated by 10 per cent, according to research conducted by Continental Tyres. This, of course, not only leads to significantly higher fuel costs but contributes to the likelihood of tyre failure, which is currently responsible for 20 per cent of all truck breakdowns. That’s where Conti’s “safe, reliable and efficient solutions” strategy comes in. Ian Jackson, Continental Tyres’ Technical Systems, sales & services manager explained how the correct application of a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS) such as ContiPressureCheck can positively impact business. Looking forward, Conti is advocating for truck TPMS to become a legal requirement and is working closer integration between its systems and truck telematics.
