Nokian introduces Weatherproof all-season range

Nokian Tyres has provided details of a new range it says will “put an end to the tyre change roulette that bothers drivers each spring and autumn.” Scheduled for an autumn 2015 launch and developed with motorists in Central Europe in mind, the Nokian Weatherproof family aims to “combine reliable winter safety with the precise driving stability and firm handling of the Nokian summer tyres” and will be available in passenger car, SUV and van fitments.

4×4 or SUV tyre sector?

During the course of the last decade, the 4x4 vehicle sector has rapidly evolved out of its utilitarian roots and – thanks to the advent of the Sports Utility Vehicle or SUV – become a distinct category of often luxury road-going cars. The speed of this evolution has increased thanks to the arrival of the Crossover Utility Vehicle or CUV. In-turn these changes necessarily impact the make-up and even the definition of the 4x4 tyre market. All this has been further impacted by the European legislation putting pressure on reducing noise levels produced by out-and-out off-road tyres in particular. The result is a market that is now much more SUV than off-road or even mixed-use driven.

2014 European trailer market hits forecast levels, UK the star performer

The West European trailer market saw substantial growth in 2014, with an increase of 14.8 per cent over the previous year. According to new data produced by Clear International, the star performers were the UK and Germany, both of which saw their markets increase by 5,000 units. Other strong performers were Spain, France and the Netherlands where trailer demand was up by more than 2,000 units. In fact only Italy, Norway and Denmark failed to register a double digit percentage increase, the latter two only because they had both seen good increases in previous years.

Goodyear beats Pirelli and Continental in Autozeitung summer tyre test

The third summer tyre test of the season is now in circulation, and like the previous two it comes to us from Germany. Motoring magazine Autozeitung compared 14 size 225/40 R18 92W/Y tyres. The rubber from European and Asian manufacturers was fitted to a 1.8 litre Audi A3 and evaluated for performance in wet and dry disciplines. With a score of 269 out of a possible 300 points, Goodyear’s Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 was rated the test winner.

UK amongst the largest 4×4 tyre markets in Europe

The UK is the second largest 4x4 tyre market in Europe, according to the latest data provided by well-known market researchers and tyre market analysts GfK. During recent discussions with GfK automotive account director Kevin Glynn, we learnt that the Italian 4x4 tyre segment is top of the pile and still growing, the UK’s share of this business is second-place but flat, and Germany takes the bronze medal in this respect, but is growing at nearly ten times the rate of the Italian 4x4 tyre market.

Michelin Solutions to introduce contracted fuel savings guarantee at CV Show

Michelin’s services company, Michelin Solutions will introduce a new generation of ‘pence per kilometre’ (PPK) tyre management contracts at the CV Show. The new products will offer customers a contractual fuel saving commitment, available on Effitires contracts when fitting premium low rolling resistance tyres. Michelin Solutions believes the move makes it the first provider in the marketplace to contractually commit to fuel savings on its tyre management contracts.

Heuver Tyrewholesale in 2014 ‘growth’

Heuver Tyrewholesale has commented on its “above-average results for 2014”. The Hardenberg, Netherlands-based wholesaler said its investments in people and resources, while also focusing on procurement and delivery conditions, had helped it outstrip market conditions. “Customer contact was our primary focus in 2014”, says Bertus Heuver, director of Heuver Tyrewholesale. “You can only retain customers if you pay particular attention to them and meet their specific needs. And our country-based approach to the market played a very important role. This required us to invest in new and experienced people – 17 new colleagues in total – as well as new resources.

Aeolus Tyre reports it will exhibit at next month’s motortech Automechanika show in Madrid, Spain. Its key focus will be the ACE2 range, however the tyre maker says it will also promote its full passenger car tyre range there as well as provide extensive information on its 2015 marketing programme.

Goodyear Fuelmax truck tyre in successful Snel Logistic Solutions test

Netherlands based transport company, Snel Logistic Solutions has completed an internal trial on Goodyear’s Fuelmax range of commercial vehicle tyres. Initial internal results have revealed that tractors fitted with the tyres save one litre of fuel per 100 kilometres compared with the other tyres in the test. Goodyear has been competing hard to win fleet business since the launch of its latest commercial vehicle tyre lines, FuelMax and KMax, resulting in its deal with UK market leader Eddie Stobart in 2014. A year ago Goodyear announced that the FuelMax S had become the “first” steer position truck tyre to attain A-graded fuel efficiency on the EU tyre label.

Deruibao Tire enters ‘restructuring’ proceedings

Chinese tyre-maker Shandong Deruibao Tire Co., Ltd. has entered “restructuring” proceedings, according to Chinese news sources. China News reported that on 7 February Deruibao Tire applied to its local authority, the Guangrao Economic Development Zone Management Committee Council, asking for the government to restructure the business – making a sale of the tyre manufacturing operation a distinct possibility.
