Apollo moves European truck tyre OE R&D to Enschede

Attending the Geneva Motor Show is about original equipment (OE) positioning as much as it is about brand building. So when ambitious and fast-growing firms such as Apollo Tyres continue to make significant investments in such an exhibition it provokes questions about the company’s OE strategy. Geneva may ostensibly be about the latest and best cars, but our conversation with Apollo executives quickly shifted to the commercial vehicle tyres sector. Tyres & Accessories spoke with Apollo Tyres vice-chairman and managing director Neeraj Kanwar as well as chief business officer Sunam Sarkar in order to find out more about this as well as to consider the company’s future retreading options.

Tyre test results mock European label ratings

If the latest tyre test published by auto motor und sport teaches us one thing, it is that consumers shouldn’t blindly trust the European tyre label. The German magazine tested nine highly-ranked summer tyres, yet some of the test results were at odds with the figures printed on EU tyre labels. The Kumho tyre – which achieved an ‘A’ label rating for wet grip – effectively failed the test, while the Bridgestone participant was only ‘conditionally recommended’. Auto motor und sport awarded top test honours to Continental’s SportContact 5.

Pirelli supports British Superbike teams’ Spanish pre-season testing

The tyre supplier to the series helped the 2015 roster complete the Official BSB Test in Almeria, the Pro Test at Cartagena, Guadix and Monteblanco, as teams tested new bikes, set-ups and devising tyre strategies. The Pirelli logistics team and UK Pirelli racing manager Jason Griffiths supported the multitude of tests completed ahead of the Donington Park opener on 4-6 April. Teams already have a full year of tyre data, since the 2015 Pirelli Diablo Superbikes used in the competition remain the same as in 2014. Pirelli predicts that the experience gained by the teams in 2014 may well result in the softer SC0 solution playing a more significant role this season.

Although often derided for a lack of ride comfort, many praise low-profile rubber for its influence on steering response and cornering precision. Others just like the way these tyres look. This month, the various characteristics of seven low profile tyres have been put under the ‘sport auto’ magnifying glass. The German magazine has evaluated size 235/35 R19 91Y rubber for the usual wet and dry performance criteria along with ‘eco’ factors such as rolling resistance and noise. The tyres were mounted on a VW Golf R for testing.
