Enjoy Tyre introducing Routeway consumer range to European markets

Contract tyre producer and manufacturer of the Rotalla brand, Enjoy Tyre, is bringing extending the Routeway tyre range it offers in the UK and Europe beyond the TBR range already available here. The new first lines destined for our shores include seven passenger car patterns, including UHP, SUV, winter and van/light commercial tyres, and Enjoy Tyre says these are now available for new orders.

US site Goodyear’s entry into online tyre retail

Online tyre retailers are nothing new, and Michelin’s current 40 per cent share acquisition of leading French portal Allopneus shows the major manufacturers are taking an interest in this business. That said, no major tyre maker sells directly to the public over its own website – but this is about to change. As Goodyear chairman and chief executive officer Richard Kramer announced at the company’s annual shareholders meeting on 13 April, the US-based company is gearing up to begin rolling out online tyre sales in its homeland. Goodyear has yet to comment on whether it plans to extend these web retail activities to other markets.

Double Pirelli victory in semi-slick tyre test – ‘regular’ tyre beats specialist products

The latest issue of Germany’s sport auto magazine (5/2015) has published a test of road-legal size 235/35 R19 91Y semi-slicks. Three candidates were mounted on a VW Golf R and evaluated under a range of motorsport-oriented criteria. In contrast to the weighting system commonly seen in tyre tests, dry road surface criteria contributed 70 per cent to the sport auto test’s total score, while wet surface criteria only carried 20 per cent and environmental factors ten per cent. The clear test winner was the ‘particularly recommended’ Pirelli PZero Trofeo R, which finished ahead of two ‘recommended’ tyres, the Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 and Dunlop SportMaxx Race.

Goodyear reflects on EfficientGrip tyre test results

More than a dozen organisations and motoring publications across Europe have put a host of summer tyres to the test in recent times, and Goodyear points out that one particular tyre regularly gained positive results. In these comparative evaluation of various tyre sizes, which were conducted between May and November 2014 and published from February 2015 onwards, the Goodyear EfficientGrip Performance secured a number of podium places, three of them on the top step.

Tyre recycling process amongst Edison Award finalists

A Melbourne-based tyre recycling specialist has become the first Australian company ever to be named an Edison Award finalist. Green Distillation Technologies, which has developed a destructive distillation process for transforming end of life tyres into carbon, oil and steel, is a contender for an award in the Energy & Sustainability category. The firm doesn’t have long to wait to discover if it has landed a gold, silver or bronze award – winners will be announced at an event in New York on 23 April.

Lehigh Technologies Wins 2015 Bloomberg New Energy Pioneer award

On 13 April Lehigh Technologies, a materials company producing micronized rubber powders (MRP), announced it won the 2015 Bloomberg New Energy Pioneer award. Lehigh Technologies was recognized for its innovation in commercializing a range of Micronized Rubber Powders (MRP) from end-of life tyres that are used as raw materials in a wide range of industrial markets, ranging from rubber to asphalt. MRP can reduce feedstock costs by 30 per cent or more, while delivering equivalent or improved performance and an improved sustainability profile compared to oil-based chemical inputs.

US tyre association opposes tyre registration legislation

The Tire Industry Association (TIA) us officially opposing apparent tyre registration language in the “Generating Renewal, Opportunity, and Work with Accelerated Mobility, Efficiency, and Rebuilding of Infrastructure and Communities throughout America Act” or “GROW AMERICA Act” that was released on 30 March 2015. At the crux of the issue is the way which the it opens the possibility that independent tyre dealer must register who buys which tyre and send this information to the government at no cost to the consumer.

Nexen Tire in Europe – new factory, R&D centre and distribution channels

Times are changing for Nexen Tire in Europe. This year the Korean tyre maker intends to start work on its first production facility on European soil and on the construction of a new and larger European technical centre. Changes are also being made to the way Nexen tyres reach European customers. Nexen Tire Europe president Seung-Do Jin recently spoke to Tyres & Accessories about these plans, and on what the company hopes to achieve in Europe.

Michelin acquires 40% stake in leading French online tyre retailer

Michelin says its acquisition of a 40 per cent share in France’s leading internet tyre retailer is a way to offer consumers “a simplified and financially-advantageous path” between searching online for tyre information and making a purchase and having tyres fitted by professionals. The tyre maker is investing €60 million for a minority stake in Allopneus SAS, which currently holds a seven per cent share of the French tyre market and sold some three million tyres last year.

Goodyear declares 6 cent dividend at annual shareholder meeting

At its annual shareholder meeting yesterday, Goodyear Tire & Rubber declared a dividend of US$0.06 per share of common stock (payable June 1 2015 to shareholders of record on May 1 2015), and shareholders re-elected 13 of the company’s Board of Directors to new one-year terms. Goodyear chairman and chief executive officer Richard Kramer also reviewed the tyre maker’s performance in 2014.

European aftermarket still growing despite a small drop in 2014

The total car after sales market in Europe across all purchased components – what is otherwise known as the aftermarket – generated sales of about 119 billion euros in 2013 (based on retail prices excluding VAT and refer to materials only and not salary).

Previous editions came out in 2009 and 2012. The surveyed components included were wear parts, body parts, engines, transmissions, electrical parts, automotive glass, chemicals, oil, tyres and paint.

Zenises developing 100-member Westlake Iberian tyre retail network

During its recent Partners Day in Bangkok, Thailand, Zenises announced the launch of its new Westlake retail initiative in Spain and Portugal. The Westlake affiliated garage network is being launch in 2015 and is aiming to support over 100 members over the next two years.

The Westlake brand is already well positioned in Spain and Portugal with national coverage via selected distributors and it is through deeper co-operation with these established regional wholesale channels that the new retail network will be initially developed.

Apollo lays foundation of Hungary Greenfield tyre manufacturing plant

Construction of Apollo Tyres’ first European Greenfield plant in Gyöngyöshalász, Hungary, officially began on 10 April 2015, with a foundation stone laying ceremony. The international tyre manufacturer’s facility will start production in early 2017. The facility will produce both, Apollo and Vredestein branded tyres and will cater to the entire European market.
