‘End Calais madness now’ – FTA

“End this madness now,” is the Freight Transport Association’s message to the French Government after ferry workers threatened a second week of cross-Channel disruption. A four-day strike by MyFerryLink workers saw burning tyres thrown on the Eurotunnel tracks and 30 miles of lorries stacked on the M20 in Kent.  Industrial action was suspended on Thursday but further walk-outs are threatened from next Tuesday and FTA deputy chief executive James Hookham says enough is enough.

CITExpo 2015 to bid farewell to Everbright with largest edition projected

Already possessing a convincing claim to being China’s biggest tyre show, the 13th CITExpo on 7-9 September 2015 will be the last at the Shanghai Everbright Convention & Exhibition Centre. Having expanded to include an extra hall in 2014, exhibition organiser, Reliable International Exhibition Services will, in 2016, transfer the show to the modern surroundings of the Shanghai World Expo Exhibition and Convention Center (SWEECC), built in the centre of the 2010 Shanghai World Expo site. The move highlights the strong growth of CITExpo, whose move to a modern, world-class facility caps many years of apparent exhibitor and visitor growth.

JK Tyre denies Birla acquisition report

Indian manufacturer JK Tyre denies it is negotiating the acquisition of Birla Tyres with current owner Kesoram Industries. Responding to an article published by Indian financial daily The Economic Times earlier today, the tyre maker told BSE Ltd (the Bombay Stock Exchange) that “there is no transaction between JK Tyre & Industries Ltd. and Kesoram Industries Ltd.”

Bridgestone-supported motocross riders leading BSMA series at halfway stage

With form, fitness and all manner of other factors to consider, sponsoring an emerging sports star is never an easy task. Yet Bridgestone is positive its decision to back four blossoming motocross stars is paying off. Rob Yates (17) and Jack Timms (20) are currently first and second in the Bridgestone-sponsored British Schoolboy Motorcycle Association (BSMA) Clubman’s Series. The tyre manufacturer says their outstanding performances are currently turning heads as the season reaches its halfway stage, vindicating the decision to single them out in a strong field.

Cooper ready to support World RX and RX Lites Swedish ‘carnival’

The popular FIA World Rallycross Championship and RX Lites series, both racing on Cooper tyres, return to Sweden this weekend, in Höljes on 3-5 July. Previewing one of the most demanding rallycross circuits in Europe, Paul Coates, general manager – motorsport, Cooper Tire Europe, said: “The Swedish round at Höljes places some extreme forces on the tyres, with a sixth gear straight and quick changes from gravel to asphalt, plus the jumps.

Calais situation is ‘absolute mayhem’ – RHA chief

On Tuesday 30 June, Road Haulage Association chief executive Richard Burnett made the trip to Calais to witness for himself the “appalling conditions” under which UK hauliers are currently operating. “This action will have a massive effect on the UK economy as a whole and is putting the livelihood and lives of hundreds of hauliers at risk”, said Richard Burnett.

End of the line for Respa

There’s been no happy ending in the insolvency proceedings related to German retreader Respa. Our sister publication Neue Reifenzeitung reports insolvency administrator Elisabeth Roggenhofer as confirming the permanent closure of the Respa retreading operation in Passau. The 19 employees at the Respa GmbH retreading facility have received their notice of termination.

Micheldever: TyreClick addresses market pressures and online competition

Following on from Micheldever Tyre Services’ announcement last year that its TyreClick online platform was in use by over 1000 UK tyre dealers, the well-known wholesaler is promoting its online sales platform as an antidote to the increasingly professional competition emerging online. Tyre smuggling continues in Pakistan

The Pakistani tyre market is subject to widespread under-invoicing, which continues to lead to smuggling and illegal cross border trade. Vatanen aims to maintain pole in Drive DMACK Fiesta Trophy

Competitors in the 2015 Drive DMACK Fiesta Trophy will aim to put on a real show for spectators from all over Europe when round two of the series takes the 11 crews to Poland next weekend. Max Vatanen won the competitive season-opener at the Vodafone Rally de Portugal in May after topping the field in half of the 12 tough gravel stages, though the lead had changed hands several times earlier in the weekend.

Drive DMACK leading WRC 2 as it seeks 2014 repeat in Poland

The Drive DMACK World Rally Team will return to Poland in the hope of a repeat of its first ever one-two victory. Jari Ketomaa and Ott Tänak romped home at the top of the WRC 2 class in 2014, and next week’s round seven of the FIA World Rally Championship, will see Ketomaa return alongside Sander Pärn at the wheel of the team’s two Ford Fiesta R5 rally cars. Topping the championship standings, the Drive DMACK team is on track to defend its WRC 2 Teams world title and both drivers will be hoping to capitalise on the ultra-fast, smooth gravel roads in Poland.

Goodyear Dunlop Wolverhampton retread plant closure: history and reaction

The proposed closure of Goodyear Dunlop’s Wolverhampton retread plant will bring to an end 90 years of tyre production in the city. The factory was part of the first Goodyear factory outside USA, when the manufacturer first started producing new tyres in the city in response to post-World War One import tariffs designed to boost British industry. At its peak, the manufacturer’s operations in Wolverhampton were estimated to have provided more than 7,000 jobs, making it one of the most significant players in the local economy. This role diminished throughout the 2000s, as Wolverhampton job losses became a regular occurrence.
