Tyre standards, registration bill introduced into US Senate

A bill calling for the introduction of minimum tyre performance standards and compulsory tyre registration has been introduced into the US Senate. This bill, the Tire Efficiency, Safety and Registration Act S.1741, is described by supporters as legislation that would improve consumer safety and vehicle fuel economy, however some sections of the tyre industry have vowed to see the bill defeated.

Apollo Tyres has received recognition for its ‘Air Master by Vredestein’ spoiler. The invention was given a DKG Product Award in the ‘Technical Rubber Products and Tyres’ category at this year’s International Rubber Conference in Nuremberg, Germany.

Reifen Gundlach gains ISO/TS 16949 accreditation

Reifen Gundlach is celebrating the attainment of ISO/TS 16949, a standard that qualifies the German tyre wholesaler to supply the automotive industry.

However, this is not a completely new development. Reifen Gundlach reports that it embarked on the course for this technical innovation several years ago. Indeed OE-compliant complete wheel assemblies have been rolling off the production line of “one of the most modern assembly lines for the aftermarket in Europe” since 2008 and the firms tyre/wheel assembly business has had quality management system standard ISO 9001 since 2006.

NTDA to challenge MOT changes on ‘road safety’ grounds

The NTDA plans to challenge at the consultation phase the UK government’s proposal to extend from three to four years the deadline for a new car’s first MOT. Chancellor George Osborne announced today that the Government is exploring the options, with the proposed changes to become part of the government’s forthcoming Motoring Service Strategy.

Bridgestone OE for Fiat 500X

Goodyear recently announced its supply of original equipment tyres for the Fiat 500X in Europe, and the crossover will now also wear Bridgestone rubber following the homologation of the Turanza T001. Shipments of size 225/45 R18 91V tyres to Fiat’s factory in Melfi, Italy have already begun.

Tyrexpo India underway

The third edition of Tyrexpo India got underway in Chennai yesterday. The tyre industry show officially opened with a ‘lamp lighting’ inauguration ceremony officiated by representatives from tyre makers, local industry associations and exhibition organiser SingEx-ECI. The show will run at the Chennai Trade Centre until 9 July.

Maxxis Gives County a Makeover

County Tyres is the latest dealership to have had a complete makeover courtesy of Maxxis, after demonstrating its commitment to the tyre manufacturer. The Newport Centre of Excellence will now have all of its external signage updated courtesy of the tyre maker and Stapleton’s.

Regulation changes approach as TRA, tyre associations issue rallying cry

The Tyre Recovery Association’s (TRA) Recycling Day, a one-day conference and dinner organised in partnership with the Retread Manufacturers Association, was held at the Ardencote Manor, Warwickshire on Friday, 19 June. Attended by representatives of the tyre and waste recycling industries, the conference included presentations covering the key themes of regulations and enforcement, best practise and innovation, and common causes and issues facing the industry. The unity of the various trade bodies struck a particularly strong note throughout the day, not just through the joint organisation of the event between the Retread Manufacturers Association (RMA) and the TRA, but with strong backing given to the event by association directors representing the whole of the UK tyre industry. The Recycling Day also marked an occasion for celebration, as the TRA celebrated its tenth anniversary.

Camoplast Solideal is now Camso

Off-road tyre, wheel and track specialist Camoplast Solideal has rebranded itself as Camso. The new name comes five years after Camoplast’s acquisition of Groupe Solideal and is said to represent “the best of Camoplast and Solideal”. According to Pierre Marcouiller, company CEO and chairman of the Camso board, the launch of Camso “highlights the success” the company has achieved in just a few years.

Bridgestone’s Burgos tyre plant achieves ISO 50001 certification

On 23 June, Bridgestone’s tyre factory in Burgos, Spain was granted ISO 50001 certification for energy management. The facility is the first Bridgestone manufacturing plant in Europe to achieve ISO 50001 certification, and the second in the world after the Wilson County facility in the USA. Bridgestone’s European Technical Center near Rome, Italy, is also ISO 50001 certified.

First win for next gen Dunlop GT3 tyre as Walkenhorst BMW wins at Nürburgring

Walkenhorst Motorsport completed its first ever win in its BMW Z4 GT3 car following an intense battle in the heat of the Nürburgring Nordschleife in the fourth round of the VLN Endurance Championship. The result was also significant for Dunlop, since it marked the first win achieved on the brand’s new generation GT3 tyres since they were introduced for the 2015 season. The VLN championship features open tyre competition, with seven different tyre manufacturers in the running.

Quick tyre change seals British grand prix victory for Hamilton

Lewis Hamilton’s victory at the British Grand Prix was inspired by an early pit stop to fit Pirelli’s Cinturato wet tyres, having conceded pole position to his Williams rivals at the start. Mercedes made the right strategy call a second time, when Hamilton was brought in for his second stop (for intermediates) just as proper rain hit the end of the grand prix.
