Growth in mature markets drives up Michelin’s H1 results

Michelin reports a year-on-year rise in its net sales, operating income and net income in the first half of 2015. Net sales rose 8.5 per cent to €10.5 billion in the six months to 30 June 2015. Operating income increased 8.9 per cent to €1.3 billion, while operating margin remained constant at 12.0 per cent. At €707 million, net income was up 13.3 per cent year-on-year.

Pirelli returns to Malaysia as World Superbike event main sponsor

Pirelli will continue as the event main sponsor at the next round of the ENI FIM Superbike World Championship in Malaysia. Taking place at Sepang International Circuit on 2 August, the event is known as the Pirelli Malaysian Round. Pirelli has identified Malaysia – as well as Qatar – as World Superbike Championship events with particular marketing value, increasing its visibility in growing, high performance markets.

Pioneering Ringtread partner increases capacity

Marangoni Retreading Systems reports the installation of a new Ringbuilder 3003 at the plant operated by Reifen Müller GmbH, one of Europe’s largest retreaders. The long-time Marangoni partner was the first European retreader to use the Ringbuilder technology, and this additional machine gives the Reifen Müller facility in Germany the capacity to turn out a further 200 tyres every eight hour shift.

Dmack to introduce new tyre, driver in Finland

Dmack will introduce a new soft compound version of its DMG+2 rally tyre in Finland, while the tyre supplier will also enter last year’s Drive DMACK Fiesta Trophy winner as a new team – Drive Dmack 2. With the tyre brand’s lead driver, Jari Ketomaa, forced onto the sidelines for his home rally on medical advice, Dmack completes its changes with a new driver; Ketomaa’s fellow Finn, Jarkko Nikara steps in to take his place on the Neste Oil Rally Finland.

NTDA members voice further MOT concerns

Experienced MOT testers across the UK say that delaying the first test from year 3 to year 4, adds to the risk a vehicle or parts will become worn out or defective. With some figures suggesting that one in five vehicles fail the MOT in the first 3 years, adding another year will not only exacerbate the problem, but also mean that many vehicles will no longer be covered by most vehicle manufactures 3 year warranties.

New website supports Firestone’s European relaunch

As of this month a new Firestone web presence is covering 18 European markets and providing product and brand information in 14 languages. Bridgestone Europe has rolled out the new site to support its ‘revival’ of the Firestone brand within the region, a drive that has seen it introduce a new tyre line-up and a marketing campaign aimed at “young-at-heart drivers” who aspire to the “freedom to drive”.

Arcom introduces new tyre display trolley

Folding metal racking for tyres producer Arcom has introduced its new AR37 display trolley, designed for use at shows or in stores. The new trolley, which has four wheels for manoeuvrability, is available in any colour, incorporating panels for company logos. It is designed for passenger car and van tyres.

Barkley – focusing on price and quality in the agricultural tyre market

After obtaining regional exclusivity, Heuver Tyrewholesale has begun sales of the Barkley agricultural range in Europe, including the UK. The Netherlands-based wholesaler expects sales interest due to the variety of fitments available and the price/quality ratio on offer (Heuver Tyrewholesale says it extensively tested the brand before taking it on), and anticipates that Barkley will play an “important” role in Heuver’s exports to Eastern and Southern Europe, as well as to Scandinavia.

ETRMA: increased car demand lifted European premium tyre markets

Increased demand for new car purchases has led to increased tyre demand across Europe, according to the latest data released by the European Tyre Manufacturer’s Association. The ETRMA statistics reveal that consumer OE tyre sales were up 12 per cent, while truck tyre OE was up a 21 per cent. The association linked this increase directly to new vehicle OE growth, which in the case of passenger cars, grew 14.6 per cent in the period.

Micheldever CEO speaks out against 4-year MOTs

Duncan Wilkes, CEO of Micheldever Tyre Services Ltd, has spoken out against government proposals to extend the time until the first MOT, calling such a move “a backwards step for road safety and a false economy.”

Speaking a week after the chancellor of the Exchequer referred the MOT proposal in his annual budget, Wilkes said: “It is incorrect to assume the test is irrelevant for new cars: Vosa’s own data indicates that 20 per cent of three-year-old cars fail their MOT tests. This means that moving the first test to four years would result in an extra half a million unsafe cars on UK roads.”

Test victory a ‘testimony’ to Vredestein tyre development

Apollo Tyres says the Vredestein Quatrac 5’s victory in the all-season tyre test published by Auto Bild Allrad this month shows the level of research and testing it puts into the development of its products. In its test of six size 215/65 R15 SUV tyres, the German motoring magazine described the Vredestein Quatrac 5 as “outstanding in the snow” while demonstrating “respectable grip on dry and wet roads” and “very low rolling resistance”. With a score of 2618 N (Newton) traction on snow, the Vredestein all-season product was judged to be “virtually on par with genuine winter tyres.”

Titan resumes Goodyear ATV, UTV production

Titan Tire Corporation recently recommenced production of its complete Goodyear ATV and UTV tyre portfolio. This return to full production is the result of an agreement the company entered into with Goodyear Tire & Rubber in August 2014, and is the first time since 2009 that the full line-up of ATV tyres has been offered.
