Transport secretary pushing for European action on car emissions tests

In the wake of the VW scandal, UK Transport secretary Patrick McLoughlin is said to be pushing for European level action on car emissions tests. According to BBC News, he said: “We are closely monitoring the situation and have been pushing for action at a European level for more accurate tests that reflect driving on the road. It’s vital that the public has confidence in vehicle emissions tests and I am calling for the European Commission to investigate this issue as a matter of urgency.”

European tyre e-tail worth 5.47 billion euros by 2021

Automotive tyre manufacturers in Europe are focussing on electronic retailing (e-tail) to serve increasing customer preference for convenience and low prices, according to a new report published by Frost & Sullivan. Currently, tyre e-tail accounts for nearly eight per cent of the total tyre aftermarket in Europe. The report concludes that this figure will continue to rise as tyre manufacturers recognise the potential to access global markets through e-tail and invest in online sales and marketing tools to meet their growth objectives. Nokian a double winner in Finnish tyre test

Victory has gone to Nokian Tyres in both the studded and non-studded categories of the winter tyre test conducted by Finnish publication Tekniikan Maailma (World of Technology). The test of 12 studded size 205/55 R16 tyres and eight non-studded 205/55 R16 tyres appeared in issue (17/2015) and saw the Nokian tyres pitted against a range of premium, mid-range and budget tyres.

Dunlop, Vredestein films honoured at AutoVision Awards

Dunlop walked away with a gold OttoCar at yesterday’s AutoVision Awards ceremony in Frankfurt, and Vredestein landed a silver accolade. The biennial awards ceremony took place during the IAA show and saw Goodyear Dunlop Tires honoured for its ‘One Second’ commercial. One Second also won a black award for best direction and best editing. A silver OttoCar award came Apollo Vredestein’s way in recognition of its Vredestein Snowtrac and Quattrac 5 product launch films.

Goodyear exclusive tyre partner to MAN ProfiDrive

Goodyear reports its selection as exclusive tyre partner to the MAN ProfiDrive driver training programme. As such, all 25 tractor units and trailers used at the main MAN ProfiDrive facility in Germany will be changed over to Goodyear tyres – they will be fitted with FuelMax and KMax tyres along with Omnitrac II mixed-service range. Going forwards, new vehicles entering the MAN ProfiDrive fleet will be fitted from new with Goodyear tyres. Goodyear will take over all tyre service duties and also provide ProfiDrive trainers with tyre training.

19 finalists chosen for 2015 AutoBild winter tyre test

In its annual winter tyre performance survey, German motoring publication AutoBild narrows a wide field of 49 winter tyres and two all-season tyres with wet and snow braking measurements before conducting a full test of a range of characteristics. 19 tyres made it through to the 2015/16 season test, conducted using the tyre size 185/60 R15.

Blue light support for CrossClimate tyre, Michelin adding SUV version & new sizes

Michelin states that the CrossClimate, its new winter-certified summer tyre, is the company’s “most important innovation for a decade.” Earlier today we reported that several fleet operators have chosen the CrossClimate for their vehicles. Michelin now shares that ‘blue light’ fleet managers across the UK have participated in a CrossClimate demonstration at the MIRA proving ground in Warwickshire, and it says the emergency service operators’ reactions were positive.

Hankook enlarges Ventus S1 evo² range with low rolling resistance sizes, announces Mercedes-Benz fitment

It appears that Hankook Tire has introduced a low rolling resistance version of its flagship Ventus S1 evo² tyre. A statement released following the company’s Frankfurt motor show press conference refers to the addition of “very low rolling resistance versions in several sizes” and states that two of these dimensions have been selected as original equipment tyres for the Mercedes-Benz C350e plug-in hybrid.

When it comes to testing a vehicle or tyre’s winter aptitude, few places in the world better are suited to the job than the Finnish village of Ivalo, some 200 miles north of the Arctic Circle. The average daily temperature struggles to rise above -10⁰C in the dark months of January and February, and for half the year the white stuff beloved by skiers is abundantly present. Continental takes victory in GTÜ winter tyre test

German vehicle inspection organisation the Gesellschaft für Technische Überwachung (GTÜ) has released one of the season’s first winter tyre tests, and the result are mostly positive. The test of eight size 225/50 R17 H/V tyres was jointly carried out with the Autoclub Europa (ACE), using a BMW 320i as test vehicle. The tyres were subjected to the usual snow, ice and wet tests.
