Continued growth for Goodyear Dunlop’s Wittlich retreading operation

Manufacturers that aim to offer a comprehensive and competitive commercial vehicle fleet portfolio can’t get by without retreading (typically mould cure retreading performed in large, centralised facilities), nor can they reduce fleet transport costs and meet customer expectations without partnering with the tyre trade and drawing upon the extensive range of services these specialists offer. In the five years since opening a truck tyre retreading facility alongside its new truck tyre plant in Wittlich, Germany, Goodyear Dunlop has made greater inroads into the local fleet business market.

Continental chalks up another tyre test victory for the WinterContact TS 850

Even during its third year on the market, Continental’s WinterContact TS 850 is a frontrunner in many winter tyre tests. Following its recent victory in this year’s GTÜ size 225/50 R17 test and the 205/55 R16 comparative test conducted by Germany’s ADAC, Austria’s ÖAMTC and Switzerland’s TCS, the WinterContact TS 850 has secured a second consecutive victory in the size 185/65 R15 winter test performed by German motoring magazine Autozeiting. The publication describes the tyre as “invariably safe, fast and balanced.

Retreader Reifen Apel achieves continuity through focus on quality

There’s a lot of talk within the tyre market at the moment – particularly in the retreading business – about tyres imported from the Far East, tyres that sometimes cost barely half as much as a new, European-made truck tyre and therefore make life very hard for many retreaders. But even though the market weakness that follows these imports is a point of concern for all involved, the problems that arrive along with these budget tyres don’t affect everyone equally.

Goodyear the ‘top dog’ in all-season tyre test

Some industry observers assumed that the CrossClimate, the Michelin summer tyre certified for winter use, would blow away the competition in this year’s spate of all-season tyre tests. However results from the Auto Bild test published last week (issue 39/2015) show this not to be the case – a new tyre from former all-season segment top dog Goodyear dominated the results.

Same name, upgraded performance – Goodyear launches 2nd-gen Vector 4Seasons tyre

It’s already gained the attention of Auto Express’s tyre testers, been rated “exemplary” and taken top honours in this month’s Auto Bild test of ten all-season tyres, and gained approval as original equipment on Audi, Ford, Vauxhall/Opel and Renault models. Therefore it’s high time that we report the launch of the second generation Goodyear Vector 4Seasons.

Motorway tyre pressure checking scheme extended

A safer roads service that allows car, van and lorry drivers to quickly check their vehicle’s tyre pressures before resuming motorway journeys has been extended until the end of the year. The project was launched in April 2015 for an initial three month trial period, but was so successful – with more than 1,000 vehicles being tested a week – that the decision was taken to continue the scheme through to Thursday 31 December.

Bridgestone celebrates 10th anniversary of Bulldog acquisition

10 years after Bridgestone bought Bulldog, the retreading market is a different place. A decade ago passenger car retreading was still going on (albeit some way from its peak). At the same Chinese tyres were present, but in nowhere near the current quantities – and in some cases they were being sold at the same or higher prices they are now. On top of this many more retreading operations were running than there are today.

Super Silje wins national motocross crown

Seventeen year-old Silje Otte has put her name on the motorsport map following her success in the Girls National competition at Maismore in Gloucestershire. In five races around the track, Silje won four races convincingly, one of which by nearly 30 seconds.

Bridgestone, the world’s largest tyre manufacturer, decided to support Silje’s efforts with a supply of its Battlecross X30 tyres, with sales and training development manager Mark Fereday being the first to praise the youngster for her achievement.

VW, emissions and the implications for tyre testing

In mid-September the emissions hit the fan for VW. What began with an admission that half a million Golfs and Beetles were not showing the right emissions values in lab tests, quickly became a global scandal involving 11 million vehicles, disastrously affecting the group’s share price, resulting in the ‘restructuring’ of the firm’s global leadership and worst of all affecting confidence in both VW and the wider automotive and automotive testing industries.

European motoring clubs publish winter tyre test results

Every autumn the largest motoring associations in Germany (ADAC), Austria, (ÖAMTC) and Switzerland (TCS) publish the largely-identical results of their combined winter tyre test. The information presented here is drawn from the ÖAMTC’s reportage and covers the comparative test of 16 size 165/70 R 14T tyres on a VW Polo and 19 size 205/55 R16H tyres on a VW Golf. The results of the two tests show frugality in bestowing the ‘outstanding’ rating – no tyre in either test received this – yet four tyres effectively failed the test with a rating of ‘not recommended’.
