Pirelli: ‘no better place to showcase F1’ than Circuit of the Americas

Pirelli will supply its P Zero Yellow soft and White medium compound tyres as Formula One visits the “crucial market” of the USA on 23-25 October. Austin’s Circuit of the Americas is the tenth venue to have hosted a Formula One grand prix in the United States. The track is well known for its spectacular elevation changes of up to 40 metres, with an uphill run to the distinctive turn one, which is a hairpin bend and the signature corner. Paul Hembery, Pirelli motorsport director said: “The United States always offers us a very warm welcome and a fantastic race weekend. Like all the other stakeholders in Formula One, America is a crucial market for us so it’s very important for us to have a race there.”

Borg & Beck publishes wiper blade safety poster

Tyres are not the only rubber component of a car that will deteriorate when exposed to weather, temperature changes and time, as a new poster published by First Line Group (FLG) brand Borg & Beck. Wiper blades’ deterioration affects driver visibility, therefore increasing risks to passengers and other road users. The company recommends that motorists replace their wiper blades annually, and has produced a poster for display in reception areas to argue this case.

MAN and Goodyear expand driver training cooperation

Goodyear has become MAN’s exclusive tyre partner for its MAN ProfiDrive driver training initiative across Europe. The partnership includes equipping all 25 tractors and trailers used by MAN ProfiDrive with the latest Goodyear premium tyres. These comprise the fuel-efficient Fuelmax, the dedicated mileage line Kmax and the mixed service Omnitrac II for use both on and off road. Goodyear will maintain the tyres, which includes taking over the tyre repair shop. The partnership further involves Goodyear training the MAN trainers in tyre matters. This builds on Goodyear’s and MAN’s long-term close collaboration related to original truck equipment. The two companies have worked together for some time with events such as the MAN Trucknology Days.

Membat Passion Run Flat scores A-grade for wet braking

Membat has announced that its Passion Run Flat tyre has passed European label test with flying colours, effectively launching the product for sale in the continent. According to the company, the Passion Run Flat tyre scored an impressive A-grade for wet braking performance, making it one of the first tyres to do so.

Goodyear ‘clarifies’ Triangle position

Following the recent publication of “Triangle and Goodyear in ‘long-term cooperation’”, which picked up on a smaller thread in Triangle’s recent conference coverage (see “Triangle ‘goes global’ at Weihai summit”), Goodyear spokespeople from the firm’s US and European headquarters contacted Tyres & Accessories in order to comment on the report. Presenting a statement on the subject, the Goodyear representatives said “Goodyear wishes to set the record straight on public comments made by Triangle.”

Yokohama comments on positive W.Drive winter tyre test results

Yokohama’s W.Drive V905 winter tyre has followed the strong showing of the Advan Sport summer tyre in the UK’s EVO Magazine tyre test, with a set of strong performances in tests across Europe. In three separate reports, two in Germany and one in Switzerland, the tyre finished among the top ranked products.

Hankook, DTM celebrate 2015 finale at Hockenheim

The grand finale of the DTM season will be contested on the Hockenheimring, as is traditional, and the touring car series’ exclusive tyre supplier, Hankook will this year celebrate five years and 56 races. For Pascal Wehrlein, the final weekend could turn into a victory parade. The Mercedes-Benz driver currently leads the drivers’ classification with a 37-point advantage and has been allocated just 2.5kg more performance weight than his closest rivals Edoardo Mortara and Mattias Ekström (both Audi).

Stapleton’s ‘Wholesaler of the year’ crown an ‘extra special achievement’

Winning the National Tyre Distributors Association Wholesaler of the year award in 2015 was “an extra special achievement”, according to leading tyre wholesaler Stapleton’s. This is said to have especially been the case as it was the first year in the awards history that all the awards were judged by a panel of independent adjudicators from the wider tyre and automoteive industry community.

Goodyear and Dunlop take top slots in Auto Express winter tyre test

Goodyear and Dunlop are celebrating taking first and second place in the 2015 Auto Express winter tyre test, details of which were released this week. Auto Express tested eight premium tyre brands in 225/45 R17 at Nokian’s ‘White Hell’ proving ground in Ivalo, northern Finland. There were 14 intensive tests on snow, wet and dry as well as noise and rolling resistance.

Bridgestone OE on all-electric Saroléa superbike

The Saroléa Manx 7 electric superbike has been homologated in the Isle of Man for public road use, fitted with Bridgestone Battlax RS 10 tyres. The company plans to develop and manufacture high performance street-legal electric motorcycles in limited editions on the Isle of Man. The Manx 7 itself is derived from the Saroléa SP7, which competed in the Isle of Man TT Zero races in 2014 and 2015. Racing on Bridgestone Battlax VO2 slicks, the Saroléa narrowly missed a podium finish this year after completing the 60km TT course at an average speed of more than 170km/h.

Independent tyre distributors building ships for choppy waters ahead

In October 2014’s Wholesale feature, Tyres & Accessories asked whether Europe’s independent tyre wholesalers still have a future in the context of the German company Ihle Baden Baden’s failure and subsequent sale to Michelin. Pointing to the lightening of the business due to such factors as the price transparency offered by e-commerce (and online marketing) we wondered whether the value of the relationship between customers and their suppliers had become more tenuous, relying only on price and reliability of deliveries. Should these two considerations become the only weapons in a wholesaler’s arsenal, T&A suggested that their role becomes more akin to a specialised freight forwarder.

Video: Trelleborg ‘hops’ to space with 3D animation

Trelleborg has launched the third episode in its series of 3D animated movies. Designed to appeal to Trelleborg’s agricultural tyre customers and the next generation of farming professionals, the short – titled ‘Space Hops’ – was created using sophisticated 3D animation techniques. In the latest instalment, Trelleborg’s animated cricket character is abducted and finds himself at Trelleborg’s Innovation Space Center. While on board, he assists in the development of the technological features of Trelleborg’s premium radial agricultural tyre. Triangle ‘goes global’ at Weihai summit

Triangle Tyre’s recent summit at the company’s headquarters in Weihai, Shandong Province continues the firm’s recent movement towards going global. The theme was “bring progress to the society, create civilization for human beings”, which when culturally translated speaks of the firm’s intention to be a CSR-conscious global player. According to the company, more than 400 customers were present including representatives of the likes of Caterpillar, Lanxess, Bekaert and VMI as well as the media researchers and scholars from different countries.

Unity Tyre talks 40 years of budget brand experience, potential wholesale contraction

Bristol’s Unity Tyre distributes budget brand tyres in the UK, having established itself as an independent wholesaler with the objective of providing a “one-stop-shop” service. Unity’s spokesperson said the company works closely with “tyre manufacturing suppliers including SD International to ensure we meet the demands of our customer base with continuous quality products.” Unity also commented on major issues in the UK tyre wholesale sector covered in October’s Tyres & Accessories feature, and suggested that further volatility could lead to its contraction in the near future.
