BBC: VW cheated in Europe too

The BBC has claimed that VW deliberately cheated emissions tests in Europe, in addition to the US emissions scandal it has admitted to. In addition the BBC’s Panorama programme also questioned the emissions behaviour of an Opel Zafira, which appeared to emit more NOx in both hot and cold engine conditions than European legislation allows.

G-Drive Racing wins World Endurance Championship LMP2 on Dunlop               

G-Drive’s Roman Rusinov, Sam Bird and Julien Canal claimed the 2015 LMP2 title after winning the final round of the FIA World Endurance Championship in Bahrain. Mike McGregor, manager testing & track support, race design & development at Dunlop, said: “Congratulations to G-Drive on the win and the title – it was well deserved. Their strategy worked really well with Sam [Bird] and Pipo [Derani #28] so quick and consistent. We’re delighted for Ligier, Jacques Nicolet and all the G-Drive team. Matt Howson also drove really well today and KCMG put up a really good fight.

Starco shifts GS wheel production to Croatia

Some two years after Swiss firm Gebrüder Schaad was acquired in its entirety by Denmark’s Starco and relaunched as Starco GS, production of the former Schaad range has ended at the Sübingen site in Switzerland. Starco GS wheels are now produced at the Starco production facility in Beli Manastir, Croatia. Starco states that while this transfer of production “marks the end of a proud era of special wheel manufacturing in Switzerland,” it will also result in the Starco GS product range reaching an even wider market than before.

Apollo’s acquisition of reifen.com a ‘sound strategic extension of the value chain’

Apollo Tyres’ takeover of reifencom GmbH, operator of e-commerce sites in six European countries, has been described as part of the company’s strategy to expand its retail network in the European market. Apollo said its takeover will allow it to support the expansion activities of its subsidiary Apollo Vredestein, which include major investments in the European premium brand Vredestein. The company stated that it has major plans for growth via an expansion of its original equipment activities – the groundwork for which is being laid via the current construction of a new plant in Hungary.

MAN chooses Michelin X Energy Line as preferred option on EfficientLine2

Michelin’s 315/70 R 22.5 X Line Energy tyres has become MAN’s preferred choice for its new EfficientLine2 model. The tyres’ fuel-saving credentials are cited as MAN’s key consideration, with the model designed for improved efficiency. Trials were conducted with the support of Michelin’s UK technical team; the tyres ran a 130 mile test route for a week.

Nissan, Michelin secure 4th GT500 title in 5 years

The NISMO-run Motul Nissan GT-R claimed the Japan’s 2015 Super GT Championship title having finished second at the Motegi GT 250km Race, the championship’s final round. The team ran on Michelin tyres, making this the fourth time in five years that the title has been claimed on the French manufacturer’s rubber.

Nokian president ‘confident’ that company is returning ‘to profitable growth’

At Nokian Tyres’ Capital Markets Day for investors and analysts in Helsinki, Finland, president and CEO Ari Lehtoranta expressed confidence that the company has started its “journey back to profitable growth.” Focusing on Nokian’s strategy and financial targets, the manufacturer also made no changes to its previous guidance for 2015; the company’s results have shown contraction throughout the year.

TWG chairman on 2015: Tough, but good

2015 marks the end of the era. I am not referring to the departure of any key executives, although there have been those. Neither I am talking about the mergers and acquisitions that have taken place – and there have been those too. Rather, I am referring to the fact that November 2015 marked the last time that the NTDA Tyre Wholesaler’s Group (TWG) are gathering for a standalone meeting and annual dinner in November. Instead, as chairman John Parker explained in his speech, the event will be reformatted and move to the day before the NTDA annual conference and Tyre Industry Awards in order to facilitate a more efficient use of everyone’s times and travelling abilities. In addition to updating members and guests on the latest developments from within the TWG, Tyres & Accessories was present to hear Parker give a wholesales-eye-view summary of what has been happening in the market, with part worn tyres and within the wider NTDA.

Pirelli made sole tyre supplier in new FIA GT World Cup

Pirelli will supply the tyres to all five manufacturers aiming to become the first ever winner of the FIA GT World Cup. Taking place on 22 November next weekend through the streets of Macau, the inaugural FIA GT World Cup has attracted a 24-car line-up of GT3 machines. The showdown will take place with a 12-lap qualification race on Saturday November 21 and then the World Cup will be decided with an 18-lap (91.8-kilometre) race around the famous Guia Circuit in Macau the next day.

Dunlop returns as Mini Challenge tyre supplier

The organiser of the Mini Challenge championship, Total Track has announced a new multi-year deal to make Dunlop its sole tyre partner from 2016. The single make championship has run since 2002 with a remit for competitive, fair and cost-effective racing.
