UK government is pro-retreading, but what about anti-dumping measures?

Perhaps the most high profile dignitary at Michelin’s “Stoke 2018” event was Clare Perry MP, Minister of State for Climate change and Industrial Strategy. Bearing in mind that retreading and casing inspection/logistics make up such a significant part of what goes on at Michelin’s Campbell Road, Stoke-on-Trent site, and given that over-supply of low-cost truck tyres from China has had a marked effect on this part of the business, Tyres & Accessories was keen to ask Clare Perry what the government can do to help.

Tire+ partnering with CRIA for inaugural 2017 event

From 20 to 22 September 2017 China Rubber Industry Association (CRIA) and China United Rubber Corporation (CURC) will jointly host the new Tire+ tyre trade show at the Shanghai New International Expo Center. The Tire+ expo will be held alongside the 17th China RubberTech. According to the organisers the new show features six particular highlights, but first – before take a closer look at those – here’s a little background.

Alliance name comes to Chelsea FC sleeve ahead of car tyre range’s European launch

In addition to its current shirt sponsorship with Chelsea Football Club, Yokohama Rubber has gained jersey sleeve sponsorship for the 2017-18 season. In addition to the Yokohama Tyres logo prominently featured across the chest of the Chelsea FC jersey these past two seasons, the new jerseys worn by players during Premier League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup matches will feature the logo of the company’s recently-acquired Alliance Tyres brand on the jersey’s left sleeve. The new jersey made its debut at Chelsea’s pre-season match with Arsenal at the ‘Bird’s Nest’ in Beijing, China on 22 July.

Titan International announces price increase

Prices for Titan agricultural, industrial and construction tyres made and sold in North America will rise by around five per cent as of 1 September. Titan International says the exact amount prices will increase depends on product segment.

Reifen Gundlach and Volvo sign contract for winter wheel supply

Under a long-term aftermarket arrangement with Volvo Car Corporation, German tyre wholesaler Reifen Gundlach GmbH will supply complete wheel units fitted with winter tyres within the Central European and Nordic markets. The Pon Holding company will begin shipping the wheels in January 2018.

Abu Dhabi firm invests in Nexen Tire, signs MoU

Abu Dhabi-based investor Mubadala Investment Company has Nexen Tire on its radar, and this has led to the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the two firms. According to Nexen Tire, the agreement its chief executive officer Travis (Ho-chan) Kang formalised yesterday with Khaldoon Khalifa Al Mubarak, Mubadala’s managing director and group chief executive officer, sets out ways and means for both parties to “explore strategic partnership opportunities.” Mubadala has directly invested into Nexen as part of the agreement, however so far the tyre maker hasn’t disclosed the extent of this investment.

Nürburgring 6h: All-Michelin podium in LM GTE Pro

Dunlop is by no means the only tyre maker present in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC), and following the weekend’s 6 Hours of Nürburgring race in Germany, Michelin reports that its partners were able to “benefit fully from the performance potential of their tyres” thanks to low track temperatures of between 19°C and 26°C.

Continental tops Auto Express tyre test

The current issue of Auto Express looks at the best tyres available in Britain, and Continental is very happy with the outcome of this year’s test. Its ContiPremiumContact 5 has been voted the top tyre in the publication’s evaluation of 11 size 205/55R16 summer tyres, and Continental notes that the award “recognises the ContiPremiumContact 5 across a broad spectrum, taking top spot for dry handling, wet handling and wet braking.”

Double ‘Dunlop win’ at Nürburgring 6h

The latest round of the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) has delivered Dunlop more good news. After a successful Le Mans 24h race, the racing teams who selected Dunlop tyres enjoyed success in the latest WEC round, the Nürburgring 6h.

ETRMA: Tyre sales down in Q2 2016

The European Tyre Manufacturers’ Association (ETRMA) reports a sluggish second quarter of 2017. According to the association, members’ sales “slowed down significantly” during the three months to 30 June compared with the first quarter of the year, and were also below sales achieved in the second quarter of 2016. Performance in all segments was negative, however this trend was particularly strong in the consumer segment.

Attitudes towards car ownership changing, says Goodyear

The number of teenagers who are not learning to drive has fallen by nearly 30 per cent in a decade – a record number, revealed by DVSA data.

The cost of university, rising price of car insurance and changes in mobility, particularly car sharing, are all deciding factors in this decline. Rachel Banton named Hamaton’s commercial director

An internal promotion sees Rachel Banton become commercial director of Whetstone-based TPMS and tyre valve specialist Hamaton Ltd. In her new role, Banton is expected to assist with the planned expansion of Hamaton’s European operations.
