Never say never. These were the words uttered by Prof Dr Burkhard Wies, passionate physicist and vice-president of Tire Line development at Continental when asked at the end of 2015 about the likelihood of an all-season tyre range for Europe. These three words flew in the face of everything we assumed the staunch supporter of seasonal tyre fitment stood for, yet weren’t altogether surprising in light of growth occurring in the all-season segment. What Wies didn’t mention at the time was that Continental was already working on an all-season range that would come to market less than 18 months later.

Goodyear names new CTO

Effective 1 September, Christopher Helsel will take over as chief technology officer at the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, and additionally take on the role of vice-president. Helsel, who currently serves as director, North America commercial and global off-highway technology, succeeds Joe Zekoski as chief technology officer.

Irish Road Hauliers, Midland Tyre Services jointly oppose truck tyre disposal plans

The Irish Road Hauliers Association (IRHA) and Midland Tyres Services Ltd (MTS) have jointly announced their opposition to the proposed inclusion of truck tyres into the pending Environmental Disposal Levy (EDL) scheme. IRHA and MTS said their opposition has the “strong and universal support” of their members and customers.

Providing inspiration through motorsport: Giti Tire partners with Team BRIT

Last year, Giti Tire debuted as sponsor and tyre supplier to the Fun Cup UK, and the tyre maker says it is proud to return for a second year in 2017. This is the first time that the tyre maker has been rated by Moody’s and by S&P, and it comments that this multi-national company level rating “reflects Hankook Tire’s strong position as a global premium tyre brand.”

RTN Clayton Vallely takes delivery of 500th Xlite forged aluminium wheel

RTN Clayton Vallely, manufacturer of specialist tankers for the environmental, food and chemical industries, has taken delivery of its 500th Xlite forged aluminium wheel from exclusive European distributor, MWheels.

The Barnsley-based company, whose clients include Yorkshire Water, McVitie’s and Redway European, has specified the market leading forged aluminium wheels on orders since March 2014, primarily as fitted units with tyres from Bridgestone, Goodyear and Dunlop.

Re-premiumisation of the UK truck tyre market?

During the last year or so everyone selling truck tyres had to face the reality that raw material costs had been increasing. The specific impact that this reality had and is having on the truck fleet business varies from company to company because it depends on terms, conditions and when contract deadlines fall. However, in general there are indications that the market is moving away from short term purchase price-only thinking as long-term value becomes a more critical criteria. Continental, Kordsa to make tyre production greener

A collaboration between Continental’s Tire division and Kordsa, the Sabanci Group’s textile reinforcing materials business, is expected to result in a new, sustainable system of bonding textile reinforcing materials to rubber-based compounds. Specifically, the two companies are working on a technology that replaces resorcinol and formaldehyde with more environmentally friendly chemicals. Continental reports that to-date the joint work has delivered “very promising” results, adding that the technology will be available to others under a free licensing concept.

Pirelli all-season fitments extend winter mobility, alongside UHP specialists

Acknowledging tyre growth in all-season tyres in the UK, Pirelli continues to recommend the use of winter tyres for its target performance car market, especially in extreme conditions. The manufacturer states that this position is reflected in its winter range, which includes both specialist and all-rounder products for the relevant segments.
