Seven good all-rounders in ADAC compact car tyre test

Our neighbours in Germany are gearing up for the seasonal changeover to summer tyres, and every year this rush to swap to the warm weather rubber is accompanied by a rash of tyre tests. ACE and GTÜ were two of the first to release their comparative summer tyre evaluations, and now high-profile German motoring organisation the ADAC has published tests of two different tyre sizes – the smaller of the two tested dimensions is size 185/65 R 15 H, a tyre suitable for small and compact cars. The ADAC tested 16 tyres in this size.

GfK: UK still amongst largest and fastest growing SUV tyre markets

The UK is still one of the largest and fastest growing 4x4/SUV tyre markets in Europe. In fact, according to the latest data compiled by market research specialists GfK Automotive, the UK is the second largest in Europe with sales of 1.157 million 4x4 tyres in 2015. Speaking with GfK Automotive account director Kevin Glynn, Tyres & Accessories learnt that only Italy’s annual sales of 1.4 million 4x4 tyres last year was bigger.

Lassa launches global TV advertising campaign

iF Design Award for Continental HT3 trailer tyre

The Continental HT3 trailer tyre, specifically the low profile size 445/45 R 19.5 fitment, has won the tyre maker an iF Design Award. The 58-person iF Design Award judging panel voted the tyre a winner in the ‘product’ award category; the award will be presented to Continental at a ceremony held in Munich, Germany on 26 February. A Conti Hybrid HT3 445/45 R 19.5 tyre is also on display at the iF Design exhibition in Hamburg, where the judges made their decision.

Nokian, Bridgestone amongst this year’s TTI Awards honourees

According to a panel of 27 judges, Bridgestone Corporation is this year’s Tire Manufacturer of the Year. The company was named victor in this Tire Technology International Awards for Innovation and Excellence 2016 category at a gala dinner in Hanover, Germany last night. Hankook planning run-flat fitments for Ventus S1 evo2 SUV

Hankook is planning to extend its Ultra high- S1 evo2 SUV performance tyre for premium sports utility vehicles with a run-flat equipped line. The company hasn’t set out a firm timeframe of when we can expect this, but a spokesperson told Tyres & Accessories that the the Ventus S1 Evo2 is “one of our most popular 4×4 SUV tyres with an ever expanding tyre size range and shall eventually incorporate run-flat requirements.”

HiQ: Young drivers part worn tyre buying habits risk road safety

A recent independent study commissioned by HiQ suggests UK roads face a growing danger young drivers happy to purchase part worn tyres.

The study, by Advantage Research and Innovation, surveyed more than 4000 UK car drivers who had purchased tyres in the past 12 months to October 2015, aged from 17 to 84. The research showed an increased acceptance of used or part worn tyres as a safe and cost-effective option among respondents aged between 17 and 34, in contrast to the older age groups, where the vast majority would not consider driving on used or part worn tyres.

Giti contests findings of ACE tyre test

In the most recent Auto Club Europa (ACE) comparative test of competitively priced tyres, the ranking of the newest GT Radial touring tyre, the Champiro FE1, has caused consternation with the manufacturer. ACE-GTU ranked the tyre bottom in the test, with its performance in the wet causing particular concern, despite the fact that the tyre carries a B rating for wet grip on the tyre label. In response, Giti sent a testing team based at Mira in Leicestershire, to re-examine its tyre at Idiada, the proving ground near Barcelona at which the ACE test was carried out. Giti also released a full statement to Tyres & Accessories, explaining that it was investigating all avenues to explain why the results recorded by ACE-GTU did not match its own findings.

Tyretraders.com enters administration

Martin T Coyne & Matt D Hardy of Birmingham based Poppleton & Appleby have been appointed as joint administrators of Tyretraders.com Ltd. Overhead expenses, rising costs, the fall in tyre prices and investment that apparently outpaced growth of the business are all said to have led to the company entering administration. Moving forward, the administrators aim to sell the business as a going concern.

NTDA members issue credit card scam alert

At least three NTDA members have come across a credit card scam and are warning others in the tyre industry about it.

In one instance of potential fraudulent credit card activity an NTDA member based in Preston received a phone call from a “Mr Khan” claiming to be based in Manchester. The caller stated that he wanted to purchase 30 tyres on his credit card and that he couldn’t collect in person and would be sending a courier to collect them. The member declined and said that he would only agree to the purchase if “Mr Khan” came in person and paid for the tyres using chip and pin with his card.
