Bauma debut for Magna MA03+

Magna Tyres Group will launch a new tyre for crane applications at this year’s Bauma show. The Magna MA03+ radial is available in three popular sizes, 385/95R25, 445/95R25 and 525/80R25, and is said to be optimised fuel economy and operator comfort.

Yokohama premieres Advan Fleva V701 UHP tyre; Advan A052 road-legal tyre and Geolandar A/T G015 SUV tyre

Yokohama Rubber presented three premieres at this year’s Geneva Motor Show – with products ranging from the Advan Fleva V701 UHP tyre to the Geolander A/T G015 SUV tyre and the Advan A052 road-legal track day tyre in between.

The new Advan Fleva V701 UHP is described as a “high-performance sport tyre” and represents the latest addition to Yokohama’s flagship Advan range. The new tyre will be available from July 2016 in 24 sizes. 43 sizes ranging from 195/55R15 85V to 255/30R20 92W will be available in early 2017.

Dunlop’s ‘evolving technologies’ helping BTCC deliever exciting racing

Dunlop’s 2016 MSA British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) tyre range has been developed to meet the championship’s two major requirements. First, the two specifications of dry tyre in soft and medium compounds need to handle nine different tracks (as well as an additional hard compound for Thruxton’s abrasive surface). And secondly, they need to handle the wide variety of temperatures across its ten rounds.

Goodyear’s new Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3 boasts strong improvements in mileage and braking

Goodyear’s latest Ultra High Performance (UHP) tyre offers performance that is a large step ahead of its premium competitors, company representatives explained at the online launch of the Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3 today (23 March 2016).

According to company representatives, who base their claims on extensive testing with TUV Sud and Dekra in addition to in-house research and development, the new tyre outperforms not only its predecessor (the Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2), but also the latest comparable tyres produced by Bridgestone, Continental and Michelin in terms of wet braking, dry braking and mileage.

Firestone sponsors Birmingham Barclaycard Arena’s stage for unsigned acts

Firestone has launched its sponsorship of a stage for up-and-coming musicians at selected Barclaycard Arena events. The Firestone Stage allows acts to play inside the Birmingham venue before headliners take to the stage, and was officially launched on 21 March at Ellie Goulding’s Birmingham show. The stage offers musical talent from across the UK to play in front of up to 15,800 people on the main concourse. The stage will also host Firestone’s annual Battle of the Bands competition, where musicians compete to win personalised Marshall amplifiers, music equipment and an opportunity to perform on the stage in future months.

Kumho extends partnership with ADAC safety foundation

For many years, Kumho Tire has supported projects organised by the ADAC, Europe’s largest motoring organisation. Its relationship with the German association includes support of the ‘Gelber Engel’ road-safety programme, and Kumho reports that this partnership has was extended ahead of the launch of a new roadshow that aims to bring road safety education to teenagers.

Kwik Fit doubles fleet warranty on brake parts

Kwik Fit has doubled the fleet warranty it offers on friction brake parts. According to the company, it is an “industry-leading move that will deliver operating cost savings to the corporate sector”. This means the firm now offers 24 months/24,000 miles warranty, up from 12 months/12,000 miles across brake pads, discs, drums and shoes. Kwik Fit reports that it is able to do this due to the training and workmanship of its expert technicians.

Kwik Fit expanding into Italy, across Europe

The Kwik Fit Group has agreed a partnership deal that sees the Kwik Fit tyre retail and fast-fit brand expand into Italy. Under the terms of the agreement, 200 centres are set to open over the next decade.

The expansion is based on a franchise agreement with CDG-ONE, part of Segema S.p.A., a leading tyre distribution group in Italy. Segema imports and distributes Yokohama tyres in Italy through Yokohama Italia S.p.A. and GiTi Tyres through Magri Gomme S.p.A.

Pirelli previews latest P Zero tyre in Geneva

Of all the tyres fitted to prestige vehicles at the Geneva Motor Show, 51 per cent were made by Pirelli. Pirelli’s premium vehicle share at the show was 32 per cent. According to Pirelli general manager, operations, Gregorio Borgo the Geneva shares are pretty much the same as Pirelli’s real-world market share. Now consider the fact that registration of prestige marques (the most exclusives brands) have increased seven-fold since 2000. During the same period, the registrations of premium marques have tripled. Meanwhile, general market registrations are only 1.5 times greater than they were at the turn of the millennium. With this in mind, you can see why Pirelli was keen to preview its latest P Zero tyre in the context of the Geneva motor show and why the company is emphasising so-called “marked tyres” more than ever.

When it comes to tyre testing, where’s the line?

Last month, talk of tyre testing irregularities came to the fore following Nokian’s admissions of “mistakes” in this area. In the April edition of Tyres & Accessories we follow up on this story in some detail with a survey of leading manufacturers’ responses to the issue of the day and an exclusive interview with Nokian president and CEO Ari Lehtoranta. While the detailed views of the world’s leading tyre makers are many and varied, they are all unified in their denials of any underhand behaviour relating to magazine and association tyre testing (see "Top tyre manufacturers deny involvement in tyre test manipulation" for the full story). And yet Nokian’s Lehtoranta has clearly pointed the finger at the broader industry on a number of occasions in the past – and apparently is continuing to do so.

Compact SUV tyre test highlights varied performance

Mixed results are the order of the day in a test of nine tyres for compact SUVs published by ‘auto motor und sport’. The German motoring magazine fitted the size 215/60 R17H tyres to an Opel Mokka and evaluated them for wet and dry performance as well as comfort and environmental criteria. The Goodyear EfficientGrip SUV narrowly beat the Continental PremiumContact 5 to snatch test the winner’s garland; both tyres were rated ‘highly recommended’, as were the Michelin Primacy 3 and Pirelli Scorpion Verde.

Balance of performance – GT Radial SportActive targets a changing UHP segment

Upon launching its Savero SUV tyre last September, the company behind the GT Radial brand gave a sneak preview of a new tyre scheduled for introduction in 2016. As we reported at the time, this tyre, the SportActive, takes the baton from the GT Radial Champiro UHP1 and Champiro HPY to become the flagship UHP tyre in the GT Radial portfolio. Following a limited launch in several non-seasonal markets, manufacturer Giti Tire has now released an initial range of 27 SportActive sizes in all European markets.

WheelRight returns to CV Show

WheelRight is to showcase its tyre pressure monitoring solution at the CV Show (26-28 April, NEC Birmingham – stand 5H130) for the first time following its live trial at motorway services on the M6

Developed in conjunction with Highways England, the technology recently concluded a successful year-long trial at WelcomeBreak Keele services on the southbound M6. As part of this landmark study, WheelRight’s solution measured more than 150,000 tyres – 50,000 of which were from HGVs.

BFGoodrich ‘Good Project’ marks new website launch

To mark the launch of its new website, BFGoodrich has launched “BFGoodrich Good Project”. The brand will fund 10 projects for aspiring racing drivers, desert rally drivers or classic car restorers, who have not necessarily had the resources to pursue their dream. BFGoodrich will provide materials, logistical and financial support to 10 projects selected from across Europe.
