Work starting on Continental’s Russian dandelion rubber lab

For the past six years, Continental has worked with partners on projects to source rubber from Russian dandelions for its tyre production. In 2016, the company announced plans to establish a new facility for industrialising this process. A seven-acre site in Anklam, not far from Germany’s Baltic coast, was selected for this research laboratory. The tyre maker now reports that groundbreaking for the 35 million-euro initial phase of its Taraxagum Lab Anklam will take place this coming Monday.

Dmack to follow home rally victory with Rally Australia

Dmack is preparing for the final round of the 2017 FIA World Rally Championship still basking in the afterglow of its debut FIA World Rally Championship event victory at Wales Rally GB. The Kennards Hire Rally Australia, based around Coffs Harbour between Brisbane and Sidney, will bring the tyre supplier’s most successful season to a close. Dmack describes Rally Australia as a demanding way to round off the championship, with a varied mix of high-speed gravel roads on offer.

‘No silver bullet’ for successful fleet partnership – Bridgestone

Having recorded a number of significant fleet wins during 2017, Bridgestone states that a number of factors combined make its proposition attractive to fleets when the pitching process begins. Fleets signing deals with Bridgestone in 2017 include Simon Gibson Transport, ARR Craib, Greggs, and the global First Group agreement. The company says there isn’t one compelling factor to secure a fleet business for a premium tyre manufacturer; in fact commercial sales director Greg Ward believes there are five or six behind any successful partnership.

Stoke-on-Trent City Council refuse collection department picks Giti GT867 Urban

After a successful single vehicle trial conducted since the start of the year, Stoke-on-Trent City Council’s refuse collection department has opted to fit the Giti GT867 across its fleet. The urban all-position tyre in size 315/80R22.5 has reinforced sidewalls, a feature popular in the waste and urban commercial sectors, which are well suited to the council’s Dennis Eagle fleet of 4×2 and 6×2 domestic waste and 6×2 trade waste configurations.

New real-life research into recycled tyre oil

New Australian research into the properties of oil from recycled tyres will evaluate the performance and emissions of commercial vehicles under actual operating conditions including engines that are representative of heavy duty trucks, light weight commercial vehicles, 4x4s and SUVs.

The ‘on-truck’ tests will be conducted on a Kenworth K200 semi-trailer that will leave the Tytec Logistics depot at Wacol, Brisbane this week and undertake the 1200-kilometre journey to the Rio Tinto Hail Creek mine, south of Mackay, North Queensland. It was slated for departure on Tuesday 7 November, with the actual results to be calculated and revealed a week later.

A maturing industry

For a long time people have referred to the European tyre market in general and the UK tyre market in particular as mature markets. This kind of maturity is generally taken to mean low growth markets that are already well developed. Here markets are significant in size and 1 to 2 per cent growth per annum is normal.

However, a number of recent market research reports give us the opportunity to reconsider this assumption on two grounds – firstly, with technology developing as it is, quantitative growth should be considered in a wider context; and secondly there is the qualitative question.

All-Dunlop LM GTE Am podium at 6 Hours of Shanghai

The penultimate round of the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC), the 6 Hours of Shanghai on 3 November, heralded the tenth Aston Martin/ Dunlop victory, with the #98 LM GTE Am car taking its third win and seventh podium finish of the season. The tally for the partnership so far stands at ten wins, 21 podium finishes and 12 pole positions including the 2017 Le Mans 24 Hours victory. It was an all-Dunlop LM GTE Am podium, with the #98 Vantage finishing ahead of the Gulf Racing and Dempsey-Proton Racing Porsches. This is the second occasion in recent times that ‘yellow caps’ dominated the podium – the round contested in Mexico last month also resulted in a Dunlop 1-2-3 finish.

Ducati approves all-new Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa SP for Panigale V4

The third generation Diablo Supercorsa SP is coming, and the new Pirelli race replica tyre has already been approved as original equipment on the latest from Ducati. The new Panigale V4 is the very first motorcycle to come factory-fitted with the tyre, and will receive the Diablo Supercorsa SP in size — 120/70 ZR17 on the front and 200/60 ZR17 on the rear.

Pirelli, MV Agusta mark new OE partnership agreement with limited Brutale 800 RR

Continuing decades of collaboration, MV Agusta has selected Pirelli as sole tyre supplier, marking the occasion with a limited edition Brutale 800 RR that can be enhanced with exclusive coloured tyres. The Brutale 800 RR Pirelli was created by MV Agusta alongside Pirelli Design, the Bicocca laboratory specialising in collaborative design projects. The new model will be displayed on the MV Agusta stand at EICMA (9-12 November 2017 at Rho Fiera, Milan, Pavilion 22, Stand I48).

ATS Euromaster signs new national tyre management contract with Kier Services

ATS Euromaster has won a new national contract to supply, fit and manage tyres for Kier Services. The new contract replaces a previous agreement with local independent tyre dealers and will see ATS Euromaster support Kier Services’ 214-strong fleet, which ranges from 3.5-tonne light commercials to 32-tonne refuse collection vehicles (RCVs). ATS-E’s proactive MasterCARE fleet inspections, which aim to increase tyre durability and performance, and help to minimise tyre-related downtime, was a key factor in the new contract.
