Van Fleet World presents Innovation Award to Michelin CrossClimate

Van Fleet World has presented Michelin’s CrossClimate tyre range with a second fleet award in as many months. The tyre was named winner of the Innovation Award at the Van Fleet World Honours 2016 to follow its Best New Product gong presented by Fleet News in March. The latest award was presented to Andy Fern, Michelin’s head of fleet, at the RAC Club in London before an audience of senior executives from across the fleet sector.

Micheldever’s Protyre retail chain is UK’s fastest growing

This year’s UK tyre retail ranking shows that the fastest growing tyre retailer is Micheldever’s Protyre chain, which added some 21 branches to its network in the last year – by far the fastest growth (both in terms of branch count and growth percentage) of any tyre retailer we are tracking. Nevertheless, ETEL remains the largest overall and is also the fastest faller, with the company running 9 points of sale less than in our 2014/2015 research. ChemChina unit to build tyre plant for Bangladesh’s Jamuna Group

Under its ‘Belt and Road Initiative’ the government of China aims to redirect overproduction within certain key industries to other countries, particularly those in Eurasia, and one project being set up in response to this strategy is about to begin in South Asia. The Jamuna Group, a Bangladesh-based private enterprise active in a number of sectors, is establishing a tyre factory within the country with technical assistance from companies belonging to state-owned chemical firm China National Chemical Corporation (ChemChina).

Autopromotec 2017 considering Korean options

Autopromotec’s organisers have flown to South Korea, the world’s fifth ranked auto industry, ahead of the 27th edition of the automotive parts exhibition of which tyres play a key part.

The party, led by Emanuele Vicentini, Autopromotec Brand Manager, went to South Korea in March as part of the “Missioni di Sistema” program promoted by the Italian Ministry of Economic Development and the ICE – Italian Trade Promotion Agency. South Korea makes 4.5 million vehicles annually and Hankook, Kumho and Nexen are all based there.

Nokian excluded from SUV summer tyre test, loses top honours in winter test

The publication ‘SUV Magazin’ has printed a test of size 215/65 R16H/V in its current 2/2016 issue. An Audi Q3 quattro was used to evaluate five brands of tyre; a sixth tyre – the Nokian Line SUV – was removed from the ranking post-testing as a “precaution” after details of Nokian Tyres’ test manipulation activities came to light.

Garage associations seek 3-1-1 MOT support from the SNP

The Retail Motor Industry Federation (RMI) and Scottish Motor Trade Association (SMTA) met with Drew Hendry MP, Scottish National Party (SNP) Transport spokesperson in the House of Commons, to present a case against extending the MOT test for new cars.

During the 2015 Budget it was announced that the Government would consult on extending the period of time before a new car receives its first MOT test from three years to four. The RMI and SMTA are concerned that a new ‘4-1-1’ system would severely jeopardise road safety in the UK.

Mitas named John Deere ‘partner-level supplier’ for 5th time

Mitas has earned recognition as a partner-level supplier for 2015 in the John Deere Achieving Excellence Program. The partner-level status is Deere & Company’s highest supplier rating. The Prague based company was selected for the honour in recognition of its “dedication to providing products and service of outstanding quality as well as its commitment to continuous improvement.”

TGI’s Tony Gonzalez enters into movie rights deal with Paramount Pictures & Appian Way

Tyres are not Tony Gonzalez’s sole passion. In addition to holding the positions of chief executive officer and chairman at US wholesaler Tire Group International (TGI), he has also built up a multimedia and artist management company, Rock The Moon Productions, LLC. Yesterday, the Film division of Rock The Moon Productions announced it has sold the rights to develop the film ‘The Corporation’ to Paramount Pictures in partnership with Appian Way Productions, the film company founded by Leonardo DiCaprio.

Greenergy Flexigrid switches fleet to Goodyear Fuelmax

Greenergy Flexigrid, the fuel haulage service company within the Greenergy Group, has signed a new deal with Goodyear that will see the company fit its 100-plus vehicles with the tyre supplier’s Fuelmax commercial tyre. The tyre has been tested extensively by several European fleets since its 2014 launch. Andy Darling, business development manager at Greenergy Flexigrid, said: “Goodyear already operate within our sector, which means that they understand the challenges and nature of our business.

Silent Sensors offers new TPMS technology

London-based Silent Sensors reports it has developed a new technology to measure tyre pressure and temperature. According to the company, the system uses passive RFID sensor technology and can monitor tyres using drive-over mats, hand-held readers or while on the road.

Schrader brings retrofit TPMS kit to Europe

Although fitment of a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS) is now mandatory in all new cars sold in the EU, the technology is still absent from a sizeable section of the car parc in the UK and other European countries, and the high (and increasing) average age of vehicles on the road means that cars lacking TPMS will remain with us for some years to come. Schrader now offers European motorists a retrofit kit that can add direct TPMS to these vehicles.

Tyre brand fidelity lower amongst younger consumers – US study

The results of the latest J.D. Power study into original equipment tyres in the US market shows higher levels of openness towards less-established tyre brands amongst younger consumers than their older counterparts. While established tyre brands still possess the highest consideration rates amongst all generations, Generation Y and Generation X consumers are more likely to consider brands that are smaller or newer to the US market.

WheelRight wins European transport award

WheelRight, which uses an external drive-over device to measure tyre pressures, recently won a European safety award at an exhibition in Holland (InterTraffic).

The Safety Innovation Award went to WheelRight for its drive-over tyre monitoring technology. This solution measures tyre pressure and vehicle weight as a vehicle drives over road-embedded sensors. WheelRight therefore measures every vehicle in a fleet from day one, instantly identifying the vehicle by its number plate, and reporting any problems within seconds.
