Since 2009, the base year for the mid-to-long term sustainability goals that Pirelli set for itself, the Italian tyre maker reports it has made ‘significant progress’ in the realization of its green performance goals. Indeed, Pirelli reports that it has improved sustainability across all its indicators.

Although Continental says the economic environment in the first quarter of 2016 was as “difficult as expected,” the company reports making a good start to the year. In the three months to 31 March, the tyre maker and automotive supplier’s sales rose three per cent year-on-year to €9.85 billion, even though negative exchange-rate effects had reduced this sales growth by 2.1 percentage points. The recent acquisition of Italian tyre distributor Franco Gomme by the country’s leading aftermarket tyre distributor, the Fintyre Group, is said to have pushed Fintyre into the ‘top five’ of Europe’s independent tyre distributors – the two firms’ combined turnover is expected to exceed €400 million in 2016. Kumho Tire has held a ceremony to mark the opening of its new factory in the USA. The facility in Macon County, Georgia, enters operation with the capacity to produce up to four million tyres a year, and will later be expanded to a capacity of up to ten million tyres per annum.
Cooper Tire & Rubber is, says chairman, chief executive officer and president Roy Armes, “off to a strong start in 2016” after reporting a 29.5 per cent increase in operating profit despite net sales being down 2.0 per cent in the first three months of the year. Operating margin rose from 10.6 per cent in Q1 2015 to 14.0 per cent in the quarter to 31 March 2016.
Nexen Tire has received three A’ Design awards for its latest tyres. Nexen’s All Road Transform concept tyre and Winguard Snow’G WH2 received gold awards, in addition to the N’Fera RU1 being granted a silver award. The company’s three products competed in the vehicle, mobility and transportation design categories.

One of the UK’s most prestigious rally events celebrates two important landmarks this weekend, with its title sponsor and tyre supplier at centre stage. The Pirelli Carlisle Rally – part of the British Rally Championship 2016 following the series’ relaunch – runs its 40th edition, and 25th under the Italian manufacturer’s name. Pirelli said its British Rally Championship stars would fight to deliver a victory on the home ground of high-speed gravel roads in the Kielder Forest. The rally consists of seven stages over Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning, totalling 75 competitive miles.
Patrick Haarmann is now head of Continental’s Asia Pacific (APAC) Truck Tire business. He began in this role on 1 March, succeeding Benoit Henry, who now works for Continental in Mexico. Haarmann is located in Continental’s APAC headquarters in Petaling Jaya, Malaysia and is responsible for the region’s replacement truck tyre business. He reports directly to Dr Andreas Esser, executive vice-president at Continental and head of the company’s Commercial Vehicle Tires business unit.
