Aston Martin Racing ‘has Dunlop Motorsport’s full attention’ in GT class

Dunlop and Aston Martin Racing describe the test of the manufacturer’s GT tyres for the first time in November in Bahrain as “a key turning point for both parties.” Dunlop committed to a full GT class development programme and Aston Martin began a return to lifting trophies. Le Mans is of great importance to both companies who are proud of their respective success there: Dunlop has 34 overall victories, more than any other tyre manufacturer, and Aston Martin took GT class wins in 2007and 2008 and the GTE Am class win in 2014.

‘Track to street’ tyre technology a Michelin Goodwood focus

Michelin says its central exhibition at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed exhibition will pay tribute to the new breed of road-going race cars this year, under the theme ‘Track to Street.’ The main stand will feature a host of fantastic and extreme cars that show the various different types of road-legal racing cars, depicting the progression from all out track car to high performance road cars.

Sameer Africa switching to Chinese/Indian contract manufacturing

On Wednesday 8 June, Sameer Africa CEO Allan Walmsley told local newspapers that the firm, which makes Yana brand tyres, would earn higher margins contracting-manufacturing with tyre producers in China and India. No names were overtly mentioned, but an unnamed Indian firm that bid unsuccessfully Sameer during the last year is thought to be a key suitor. No date for the closure of production and transition to contract manufacturing has been given, but judging by the nature of speculation surrounding Sameer’s ownership and business in general it is likely to be an ongoing process.

Pirelli a clear winner in classic tyre test

Modern tyre technology paired with classic dimensions: German classic car magazine Auto Bild Klassik (issue 7/2016) has tested four such tyres. A Porsche 911 E2.4 served as test car; it was put through its paces fitted with the quartet of size 185/70 R15H/V/W brands.

Enjoy Tyre hails Routeway Reifen debut success

Enjoy Tyre reports that the introduction of its Routeway brand at the recent Reifen Show in Essen, Germany – the firm’s primary objective at the event – was a success.

Routeway joins Rotalla as “a quality alternative choice to premium tyres”. According to the company, both brands with their full summer and winter ranges attracted enthusiastic attention from visitors throughout the four-day event.

Cooper employee honoured with Lone Star JR Johnny Rutherford Award

Gavin Johnson, development manager for ‪Cooper Tire Europe’s Avon Tyres Motorsport department in Melksham, UK, has won the prestigious Lone Star JR Johnny Rutherford Award. Created to honour the IndyCar participant who best exemplifies outstanding character, integrity and service, Johnson was awarded with a custom trophy and a $1,000 cheque.

SUV all-season tyre test shows broad array of performance

The 7/2016 issue of German 4×4 and SUV magazine Auto Bild Allrad contains a test of seven size 215/60 R16H/V all-season SUV tyres. The tyres were fitted to a Skoda Yeti for evaluation purposes and rated for on-road performance in the snow, wet and dry as well as for environmental and comfort characteristics. Off-road performance was not tested.

Hutchinson dominates Supersport, Superstock Isle Of Man TT races on Metzeler

Ian Hutchinson won the Supersport and Superstock categories on Metzeler’s road legal Metzeler Racetec RR tyres, developed through past road racing seasons. The tyre manufacturer’s products were fitted to the whole podium in both races, but it was Hutchinson’s imperious form that led to victories on his Team Traction Control Came BPT Yamaha YZF-R6 in Supersport and Tyco BMW S1000RR in the Superstock class.

Pirelli travels to Canadian grand prix with P Zero Purple ultrasoft

For the seventh round of the 2016 Formula One World Championship, Pirelli will supply its new P Zero Purple ultrasoft for the second time, following its debut in Monaco. As a low-grip circuit with high track evolution, Canada’s semi-permanent Circuit Gilles Villeneuve provides a good opportunity to test out the Monaco tyre allocation (the three softest Pirelli P Zero F1 tyres) in a different context; the tyres will be used at higher speeds and with higher loads, generating higher temperatures and putting increased energy through the tyres. The circuit is also known for its high kerbs, making it a test of the tyres’ construction as well is their tread compounds.
