Bridgestone recalls 21,000+ tyres in the USA

Bridgestone Americas Tire Operations is recalling 21,513 Bridgestone Dueler H/L 422 Ecopia P245/60R18, Dueler H/L Alenza 275/55R20, Ecopia H/L 422 Plus 235/55R20, Turanza EL440 235/60R18, and Firestone Destination LE3 225/65R17 tyres made between 11 and 17 July 2021. According to documents filed with the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on 18 August, a small number of these tyres “may have been manufactured with a pinhole in the outboard side of the tyre” and “if left unaddressed, this slow leak could affect tyre performance and…increase the risk of a crash.”

CV Show debut for latest Hankook SmartFlex tyres

Next week the Commercial Vehicle Show returns to the NEC in Birmingham after a year’s absence, and Hankook Tire will be present as an exhibitor. The tyre maker will debut two new products for European markets during the show, the Hankook SmartFlex AH51 and DH51 steer and drive tyres.

First continuous pyrolysis plant for end-of-life tyres ‘supports’ TRA ‘vision’

Carlton Forest Renewables (formerly known as IRR Waste 2 Energy) has become a member of the Tyre Recovery Association (TRA). The company’s Worksop based continuous pyrolysis plant – the first of its kind in the UK – is due to become fully operational in the fourth quarter of 2021. The company said that it pledges its support to the TRA as they work towards a shared goal for the responsible recovery of used tyres.

GKN Wheels becomes Moveero

In October 2020 GKN Wheels & Structures was acquired by Aurelius Equity Opportunities SE & Co. KGaA. The new owners announced that the acquisition was completed on 26 November 2020 and since then, the company has been “planning for our future”. This means “listening to [its] teams internally as well as our external stakeholders-working to look at how we can work better and smarter together as we move forward”. But in practice the most noticeable immediate development is the decision to rename the business as Moveero.

New tyre-flipping world record

A tyre flipping contest in Newcastle has achieved a new Guiness world record. The event which took place in Blackett Street, Newcastle city centre 14-15 August was sponsored by Continental agricultural tyres and featured a Tractor70 tyre weighing 100 kilos for the men and a 70 kilo CompactMaster AG telehandler tyre for women.

A new world record was recorded for the men’s 100 kilo 12-hour tyre flip with a distance of 10.725 kilometres becoming the new benchmark.

Royal Mail trialling Enso Tyres on electric vans

Royal Mail is embarking on six- to nine-month trial of Enso Tyres’ electric van-orientated tyres. The trial, a partnership between Royal Mail, Transport for London (TfL) and Enso, aims to make “Electric Vehicles (EVs) even cleaner to further improve air quality”, according to the stakeholders. According, to Tyres & Accessories’s 2021 survey of public tyre fleets, Royal Mail is the second-largest fleet in the UK.

TyreSafe: EV tyres are ‘significantly different’

TyreSafe is advising owners of electric vehicles (EVs) to “pay close attention to the tyres they choose when the originals need replacing” because “increasingly, the tyres fitted are specifically designed for use on EVs and can be significantly different to the ‘normal’ tyres…”. Specifically, TyreSafe is warning EV owners that fitting the wrong type of tyre could result in “loss of range, extra noise, accelerated wear and the risk of failing while being driven, which could result in a serious incident”.

TPMS valves becoming mandatory for more vehicles

The 74th session of the UNECE WP 29 GRBP Working Party on Noise and Tyres will take place in September, and ahead of this meeting the Association of European Wheel Manufacturers (EUWA) highlights an impending change to regulations covering tyre pressure monitoring systems. This change will see the mandatory fitment of TPMS valves extended to further classes of vehicles.

TyreSafe calls for submissions ahead of refreshed 2021 online awards

TyreSafe has revised the categories and refreshed judging criteria for its 2021 Awards. Two changes stand out. Firstly, there are fewer categories this year, which could mean competition will be more intense. And secondly, TyreSafe will not be holding a face-to-face Award ceremony for the second year running this year. However, winners will have the opportunity to celebrate via a social media activity and video submissions are also eligible this year.

Bicester garage Grip Tyres joins First Stop network

One of Bicester’s oldest and most popular tyre centres has become the latest independent garage to join the First Stop network. The Victoria Road garage is benefitting from new signage, marketing and social media support, and a broader range of premium tyres already in place. It has also added an MOT station and the latest vehicle diagnostic equipment, worth thousands of pounds. Grip Tyres has provided tyre services to the town’s motorists for around 27 years. First Stop said its popularity in the community was a compelling factor behind the network’s initial approach.

Pirelli supplying bespoke tyres for NSX Type S

With an output of 592bhp, the Type S is the most powerful NSX to date. It’s also the final version of the second-generation car, and Honda is producing just 350 specimens. Customers in the USA, where the car is known as the Acura NSX Type S, will receive 300 of these, with the remainder going to buyers in Japan and Central America. Pirelli is supplying tyres for the 2022 Acura NSX Type S.
