German tyre retailer A.T.U. up for sale – again

A.T.U., one of Germany’s largest tyre and car parts retailers, is once again for sale. According to information from market observers, the company is battling serious financial difficulties. US-based private investment firm Centerbridge Partners, which acquired a controlling share in A.T.U Auto-Teile-Unger GmbH & Co. KG from Kohlberg Kravis Roberts (KKR) at the end of 2013, has now contracted German restructuring expert Hans-Joachim Ziems. The presence of Ziems doesn’t bode well for A.T.U., which sells around 3.5 million tyres in Germany each year.

Michelin Pilot Sport 4 wins Auto Express tyre test

Michelin’s new Pilot Sport 4 tyre has won the Auto Express Ultimate Tyre Test “by a clear margin” in the dry. The tyre performed well in virtually all of the test categories, which include dry handling, dry braking, wet handling, wet braking, wet cornering, straight aquaplaning, curved aquaplaning, rolling resistance and cabin noise.

Trelleborg agricultural Road Show continues in Italy

The second European stop of the Trelleborg 2016 Road Show for agricultural tyres begins today at the Nova Agricoltura exhibition in Italy. As was the case when the company kicked off its tour in Germany last month, Trelleborg will use the event in Bologna to showcase the selecting the optimal tyre inflation pressure for specific farming operations, as recommended using the Trelleborg Load Calculator (TLC).

Red Dot award for Hankook DynaSYNC

Hankook Tire has commented on the naming of its DynaSYNC concept tyre as a Red Dot Design Award 2016 winner. Company chairman and chief executive officer Seung Hwa Suh describes the Red Dot recognition as a “great honour” for Hankook. “Receiving the award solidifies Hankook Tire’s commitment and determination to lead future driving through progressive innovation and creative design. Multistrada to increase production capacity despite lower car tyre exports

According to Pieter Tanuri, president director of Indonesian tyre maker PT Multistrada Arah Sarana Tbk, the company is aiming for a “ten to 15 per cent increase in revenue” during 2016. Multistrada intends to support this rise through higher exports and will accommodate this hoped-for increase in unit sales by boosting production capacity for both car and motorcycle tyres. “Exports are the highest sales contributors,” noted Tanuri, adding that sales in export markets account for 70 per cent of total company sales.

Divestment drives up Trelleborg’s Q2 2016 profit

For Swedish firm Trelleborg AB the second quarter was, according to president and CEO Peter Nilsson, “particularly eventful.” The acquisition of Mitas parent company CGS was finalised during the three months to 30 June 2016 and the operations consolidated into Trelleborg’s financial statements for the month of June. “The integration of CGS into our existing operations has begun and is progressing well,” comments Nilsson. The company also “devoted considerable time during the quarter” to complete the sale of its holding in Vibracoustic to partner Freudenberg.

Pirelli previews Hungarian grand prix as F1 season passes halfway mark

Pirelli will supply its P Zero Red supersoft, Yellow soft and White medium compounds to Formula One’s teams at the recently resurfaced Hungaroring. The tyre manufacturer says that the circuit “could not be any more different” following the previous race at Silverstone; the tight and twisty Hungaroring has been described as being like an oversized go-kart track, while weather conditions can range from extremely hot (a common occurrence) to rain (which was the case two years ago, as well as 2011).

Yokohama has won TyreSafe’s Tyre Manufacturer Award in recognition of its efforts promoting tyre safety in the UK. Pirelli aiming for less F1 tyre degradation in 2017

Testing of Pirelli’s wider 2017 Formula One tyres is scheduled to begin early next month, and although a 2017 car isn’t available for these tests, Pirelli expects they will nevertheless give a good indication of tyre performance. Speaking with Formula1.com, Pirelli motorsport director Paul Hembery shared that the tyre maker is aiming for much less tyre degradation next year, along with a wider operating window.

91% of garages report rise in expired MOTs

The Retail Motor Industry Federation (RMI) and Scottish Motor Trade Association (SMTA) report that since the end of the paper tax disc, 91.2 per cent of garages have seen an increase in the number of customers bringing cars that have expired MOTs in.
