Roborace names Michelin as official tyre partner

Roborace has named Michelin as its official tyre partner. Michelin has been working secretly at its testing facilities and sharing over 125 years of its expertise with Roborace to develop an exclusive solution for the ultimate ‘Robocar’, designed by Daniel Simon, which will feature next-generation Michelin road tyres to be used in the series. Roborace is currently in its Beta season appearing at Formula E circuits for exhibitions using its development car ‘DevBot’. The official unveiling of the championship's Ultimate car will take place in 2017.

ATS Euromaster opens training/service centre in Birmingham

ATS Euromaster has opened a new centre in Rupert Street, Birmingham, that will provide truck servicing, as well as acting as a training centre for new expert technicians.

An upgrade to the existing Aston Truck service centre, ATS Euromaster has invested around £250,000 in a move to new premises which at 22,000 square foot are around double the size of an average service centre.

‘Class of 2016’ graduates from Michelin Tyre Academy

Delegates from the Michelin Tyre Academy ‘Class of 2016’ flew to the company’s Clermont-Ferrand headquarters for the third and final module of the training course, and were rewarded for their dedication with a 4×4 driving experience on a mountain-top track.

Six students from the Academy’s initial 2016 intake were selected for the module by their respective Michelin Auto Professional advocate programme tyre dealerships, which are also all part of the Michelin Certified Centre (MCC) network.

New sizes join Barum 200 R-series

The Barum range has expanded with the addition of three new trailer tyres to the 200 R-series. The BT 200 R is now available in sizes 385/65 R 22.5 and 385/55 R 22.5 as well as in the special 445/45 R 19.5 size developed for use in volume transport. The Continental-owned brand reports that the “robust tyres feature high mileage and economical fuel consumption and the flexibility for use in both regional and long-distance transport.”

Bridgestone signs Tiger Woods for golf ball sponsorship

Around 85 per cent of Bridgestone Corporation’s revenues are earned from the sale of tyres, with the remainder coming from chemical and industrial products, bicycles and sporting goods, including golf balls, clubs and accessories. To highlight these last-mentioned products, Bridgestone Golf has signed a multi-year agreement with Tiger Woods that will see him exclusively play and promote Bridgestone golf balls.

CURC launches Tire+, moves RubberTech to September in 2017

When Reifen China 2016 opened the doors of the Shanghai New International Exhibition Centre on the 1 December, it was immediately apparent that several significant changes are afoot in the Chinese tyre show sector. As the name suggests, Reifen China has always been organised by Messe Essen in partnership with China United Rubber Company (CURC) and co-located with CURC's always-well-attended RubberTech. But next year that will change and the Reifen name has been licensed to Messe Frankfurt for use alongside its Automechanika Shanghai show. This move, which began as a ripple-effect emanating from the Reifen versus The Tire, Cologne competition that has been going on in Germany, has caused repercussions as far away as China. As a result CURC (the exhibition firm behind RubberTech and Messe Essen/Reifen China’s former partner) will also be launching a new tyre event in 2017.

UK drivers at risk due to lack of tyre safety knowledge, says Hankook survey

A new study by Hankook Tyres has revealed that 1 in 10 UK car drivers have never checked their tyre pressure and almost half of drivers surveyed are unaware of the legal limits for tyre tread on their vehicle. Furthermore, 1 in 5 drivers in the UK are only checking their tyre pressure every 6 months, despite it being recommended to check every week.

SRI: USA Technical Center fully operational in January, European facility in September

Since gaining a much greater degree of freedom to conduct business in North America and Europe with the dissolution of its global alliance with Goodyear in October 2015, the Sumitomo Rubber Group has striven to enhance its R&D, production and sales infrastructure to better serve these markets. As part of these efforts, the tyre maker has built a new, 3,500 square metre USA Technical Center on the grounds of its Tonawanda factory in New York State. Sumitomo Rubber Industries reports that this facility will become fully operational in January 2017. The company is also moving forward with the preparations for a Europe Technical Center, which it expects to be fully operational as of September 2017.

Aston Martin partnership success demonstrates new Dunlop motorsport strengths

Aston Martin Racing’s two titles at the 6 Hours of Bahrain FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) season finale came in its first season working with Dunlop. In total Dunlop-shod vehicles won five times this year in the WEC. Following prior successes in the prototype category, Dunlop chose to take on an FIA World Endurance GTE Partnership this year with the Aston team, and will seek to provide more championship standard tyres through a testing programme started in September. Xavier Fraipont, managing director, Dunlop Motorsport and motorcycle EMEA, said the tyre manufacturer is “developing new technologies for both LMP and GT with an intensive schedule of evaluation until the start of the 2017 ELMS, VLN and WEC seasons.” Tyres & Accessories caught up with Fraipont after the end of the 2016 WEC season, beginning the conversation by asking how Dunlop was able to achieve so much in endurance racing this year.

BMW Team MTEK wins Hankook DTM Best Pit Stop Award 2016

Hankook Tire doesn’t just supply tyres to the DTM touring car championship – it also awards the fastest pit stop tyre changers. BMW Team MTEK delivered the fastest tyre change times over the past season, and by doing so has won Hankook’s Best Pit Stop Award 2016. Manfred Sandbichler, Hankook Tire’s motorsport director for Europe, presented the Hankook trophy to the winning team at Team MTEK headquarters on 8 December.

Praise for Michelin’s Clio Cup tyre

According to Renault Sport, leading names from the Renault UK Clio Cup are predicting increased speeds and closer racing through the championship’s switch to Michelin tyres in 2017. Multiple title-winning team Pyro Motorsport, three-time champion driver Paul Rivett and 2016 race winner Paul Streather have all praised the Michelin tyres after testing them.

Evans’ Dmack victory at Bettega Memorial Rally ‘important’ to brand growth in Italy

Dmack British Rally Champion Elfyn Evans rounded off his spectacular season in style with overall victory at this weekend’s popular Bettega Memorial Rally at the Bologna Motor Show in Italy. Evans beat Kalle Rovanpera (Ford, running on Pirelli tyres) after fending off competition from World Rally Championship runner-up Thierry Neuville (Hyundai, Michelin) and Alessandro Bettega (Ford, Yokohama) in two days of qualifying heats on the purpose built track. Dmack managing director Dick Cormack said the win was “an important result” for Dmack in growing the brand in Italy.

Acquisition expands Evonik’s silica horizons

The acquisition of a new business will see Evonik Industries AG extend its silica activities beyond tyres and other industrial applications. Evonik has acquired the silica business of US-based firm J.M. Huber for $630 million, a deal it says will enable Evonik to “expand its position in North America and Asia in this profitable and resilient business.”
