Pirelli resumes cross-ply car tyre production

No, this isn’t fake news or a misprint: More than half a century after producing its last cross-ply car tyre and electing to exclusively focus upon radial construction in this segment, Pirelli is once again making cross-ply tyres for classic cars. The Pirelli Stella Bianca is back.

Bain Capital buys US distributor Dealer Tire

The private equity firm building up a European tyre distribution group through its acquisition of firms such as Fintyre and Reiff has made a significant investment in North America. Bain Capital reports its acquisition of a majority shareholding in US-based aftermarket tyre and parts distributor Dealer Tire, LLC. The interests of Lindsay Goldberg LLC, Dealer Tire’s investment partner since December 2014, will be acquired by Bain Capital Private Equity. The transaction is expected to close by December.

Pirelli revises F1 tyre colour coding

Depending on how you look at it, Pirelli has either simplified its F1 tyre colour coding for 2019 or made it more complicated. Only three P Zero colours will be seen at each race next year. These will always be the same – white, yellow and red – and denote the hard, medium and soft tyre choices at every Grand Prix. But the use of just three colours doesn’t mean Pirelli will only offer three tyre compounds.

ETRMA study: Rescaling of tyre label would be premature

The Market Surveillance Action on Tyres 2015 (MSTyr15) project may claim success in its aim of ensuring the enforcement of tyre labelling regulations, yet enforcement is only effective if end consumers actually consider label results when buying tyres. A report funded by the European Tyre & Rubber Manufacturers’ Association (ETRMA) suggests they aren’t, and the association wants this considered during the European Commission’s current review of tyre label regulation (1222/2009).

Linglong holds business investment talks with EBRD

Talks were held last week between Linglong Tire and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). Linglong Tire chairman Wang Feng met with key EBRD representatives, including Jurgen Rigterink, first vice-president, Betsy Nelson, vice-president and chief risk officer, and Jean-Marc Peterschmitt, managing director of industry, commerce and agribusiness, in London on 16 October to discuss cooperation on the construction of Linglong’s tyre plant in Serbia.

Michelin predicts significant slowdown in car and truck tyre demand

While presenting its nine-month 2018 results, Michelin has predicted a significant slowdown in passenger and truck tyre market conditions in the second half of the year. However, the well-known tyre manufacturer also predicted “sustained growth” in the speciality sector, which consists of OTR, two-wheel, aircraft and agricultural tyres.

A new agreement has expanded Bridgestone Corporation’s involvement in international sport. The tyre maker and rubber manufacturer has become a Worldwide Paralympic Partner; it is the seventh entity to associate itself with the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) in this capacity.

ATD enter bankruptcy proceedings

A month after its credit rating was downgraded, American Tire Distributors, Inc. (ATD), the largest tyre wholesaler not only in the USA, but in the entire NAFTA region, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the District of Delaware on 4 October. At the time, the company announced that it had entered into a definitive agreement with approximately 75 per cent of its bondholders on the terms of a recapitalization that would reduce the company’s debt by approximately $1.1 billion and increase its financial flexibility as it continues its ongoing transformation

Bridgestone to offer run-flat option on key product lines

As of November, Bridgestone will make its proprietary DriveGuard RFT (run-flat technology) available on its main product lines for the aftermarket. Specifically, the Turanza, Blizzak and Weather Control tyre ranges will gain DriveGuard fitments.

IDEA honour for Hankook EV tyre

Hankook Tire’s recently-released electric vehicle tyre has already snapped up its first award. At last month’s International Design Excellence Awards (IDEA), the Hankook Kinergy AS EV was honoured in the automotive and transportation category. This is the first time Hankook Tire has received an IDEA award for a production model, having previously only gained this distinction with concept tyres, such as its ‘climate change’ concepts in 2015 and its ‘Birth On Nature’ (BON) tyre two years later.

Mobox: Flat rate tyre subscriptions a la Bridgestone

Bridgestone has introduced an all-inclusive monthly subscription service for tyres called Mobox. According to the company, Mobox subscription offers “new tyres, full warranty and other premium vehicle-related services, and all at an affordable price per month”.

Shire Aggregates specifies Michelin X Works tyre after trial highlights savings

Shire Aggregates has specified Michelin tyres as original equipment across 12 new MAN 32-tonne 8×4 tippers and adopted a Michelin policy as standard for future tyre purchases. The decision came after a trial set of Michelin X Works tyres demonstrated potential savings of “more than £26,000 a year” in running costs, the company states.
