Dmack Trophy winners tackle WRC 2 prize drive events

Three drivers from the 2016 Drive Dmack Fiesta Trophy will tackle at least two rounds of the FIA World Rally Championship WRC 2 series this year. The one-make Dmack championship has offered prize drives for three years – what Dmack says is the biggest prize in world rallying. The brand adds that the Trophy has “effectively become the Junior WRC for 2017”.

Sport auto: Two tyre tests in one, and two victors

German car magazines love a tyre test, and sport auto is the latest to publish its findings on a batch of the current summer products. Using a Toyota GT86 as test vehicle, the performance-oriented sister publication to auto motor und sport evaluated seven size 225/40 R18Y UHP tyres together with three road legal semi-slicks. In consideration of their different focus, the trio were separated from the seven UHP products in the final results table.

Yokohama exclusive Nitro Circus tyre in the US

Inspired by the Nitro Circus television phenomenon created by Travis Pastrana, Nitro Circus Live is an action sports show featuring the world’s best athletes in FMX, BMX, skate, base jumping and more, and Yokohama has now become the exclusive tyre of Nitro Circus Live Tour in the United States. The 2017 US Nitro Circus Live Tour kick starts on June 3, and the tyre maker states it has taken on its exclusive tyre role in order to spotlight its Geolandar light truck range.

Pirelli Industrial adds to Daimler :01 Series bus homologations

Daimler’s homologation of Pirelli’s extra-load :01 Series commercial tyre products for city, highway and regional applications has continued, adding the latest Pirelli MC:01 (275/70R22.5). The tyre has been designed with an increased load index, suitable for new-generation transportation such as hybrid and electric vehicles, which require a greater axle load.

MoU signed for Philippines tyre plant project

A Memorandum of Understanding has been signed between the Philippines’ Department of Agriculture, the Philippine Rubber Farmers Association (PRFA) and Phoenix Petroleum Philippines, Inc. to establish the country’s first ever tyre production facility.

Auto Bild summer tyre test: 6 from 20 finalists given ‘exemplary’ rating

The unworthy have already been weeded out, and now Auto Bild has given the remaining 20 tyres from the original 52 candidates in its 2017 summer test a thorough going over. The size 225/50 R17 tyres were fitted to a BMW 320d for evaluation in a range of disciplines not covered in the preliminary round, including aquaplaning, rolling resistance, mileage and noise. Victory went to the top-ranked rubber from the initial test, the Continental PremiumContact 6.

DTM: Hankook introduces grippier, faster wearing Ventus Race slick

Cars competing in the DTM this season will wear a completely new generation of Hankook slick. The new Ventus Race is the fourth generation of Hankook slick supplied to the touring car championship and comes in the front axle size 300/680 R 18 and rear axle 320/710 R 18 – the same sizes as used in 2016. Hankook Tire states that it generates more grip than its predecessor and, when pushed hard, will wear more quickly and intensively than the tyres used last season. Depending on driving style, these characteristics are expected to significantly influence lap times.

Goodyear, Hankook joint winners of Auto Bild Allrad SUV tyre test

Its EfficientGrip SUV scored a victory in the recent ADAC summer tyre test, and now Goodyear has racked up another win with its Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3. The tyre, together with the Hankook Ventus S1 Evo² SUV, is joint winner of the test of ten tyres published in the most recent issue of German SUV magazine Auto Bild Allrad.

Xbrite+ wheels help put shine on Dennison Trailers’ gold trailer milestone

Dennison Trailers has created a special one-off gold trailer to celebrate production of its 50,000th unit, with additional sparkle provided by Xbrite+ forged aluminium wheels. American Process and Birla Carbon announce nanocellulose tyre joint venture

On 2 March 2017 American Process Inc. (API) and Aditya Birla Group’s, Birla Carbon signed a joint development agreement to explore the technical and business potential of combining carbon black and nanocellulose to improve tyre performance.

Initial evaluations suggest synergies between the companies’ Birla Carbon and BioPlus nanocellulose products when it comes to lowering the rolling resistance of tyres. Over 70 per cent of the world’s carbon black is consumed by the tyre industry, with carbon black constituting 25 per cent of the tyre weight.

Aiming for the top 10: Sailun developing five-year plan to climb global rankings

At the beginning of November Sailun Jinyu International (SJI) appointed Gareth Passmore as its president for Europe. He replaced Martin West, who has been appointed global president of the SJI Speciality Tire Group. Passmore, who started on 1 December 2016, is now responsible for all operations throughout Europe across all of the Sailun Jinyu Group brand portfolio – Sailun, Jinyu, Black Lion and Rovelo. Passmore brings with him over 25 years of tyre industry experience, including time with Continental, Apollo (in South Africa) and latterly with Sumitomo Rubber Industries where he headed up the Falken brand’s European export operations. During a recent brand and winter tyre product demonstration event in Sweden, Tyres & Accessories caught up with Passmore and at the same time we were introduced to Sailun’s ambitious goal of becoming a top 10 tyre manufacturer in the years to come.

23% of motorists say increased penalties will not affect mobile use at the wheel

Under new legislation, motorists who have had their licences for less than two years will be banned if they use their device just once and penalties for all drivers caught using their handset in the car are doubling. However, research from Goodyear Tyres UK has shockingly revealed that almost a quarter (23 per cent) of motorists said the risk of being prosecuted would not affect their mobile phone use behind the wheel.
