Algeria’s first tyre plant completes first test phase

On 26 March 2019 the Iris Group announced “the success of the first test phase” of its “100 per cent made in Algeria” tyre factory. Celebrating the news, the company thanks its partnership and stakeholders for their efforts up to this point: “All this could not have been done without the perfect involvement of our collaborators, a big thank you to all!”

Giti’s US plant approved for tyre supply to VW

Giti Tire’s United States manufacturing facility in South Carolina has completed an audit by Volkswagen to supply two tyre sizes for the 2019 Volkswagen Passat. The plant can now officially begin producing the All-Season GitiComfort A1 as an original equipment fitment for the Passat in sizes 235/45R18 95H and 235/40R19 92H. Production commences in the first quarter of the year; these tyres are the US plant’s first original equipment supplied tyres.

MotoGP Dunlop prepared for Triumph power

This coming weekend marks the start of this year’s FIM Moto2 and Moto3 World Championships. The 19-round season begins in Qatar and continues through to a concluding round in Valencia, Spain in November. For Dunlop, this is its tenth season in Moto2 – the tyre maker has served as official tyre partner since the championship’s inception. Dunlop says it was chosen for this role after becoming the most successful tyre in the open-competition 250GP class that preceded it.

One for the road: Michelin introduces RoadBib for roadgoing 200+hp tractors

Following nearly two years of extensive end-user testing with agricultural contractors across Europe, Michelin has launched its new RoadBib tyres in the original equipment and replacement markets. With the RoadBib, Michelin has introduced the first fitment for 200+hp tractors to be specifically designed to provide high performance, longevity and traction on machines used intensively on the road.

Kwik Fit named sole tyre supplier to SG Fleet UK

A new, three-year contract sees Kwik Fit become sole supplier of tyres and associated products to SG Fleet UK. The arrangement covers more than 13,000 company cars and vans that SG Fleet UK currently has under management.

Discoverer All Season: Cooper launches ‘year-round’ range

Cooper is the latest tyre brand to add an all-season product to its UK and European market range. Called the Discoverer All Season, the new arrival is marketed by Cooper Tire Europe as a tyre “designed to deliver reliable traction in unpredictable weather all year round.” The ‘designed in Europe, for Europe’ range wears the three-peak mountain snowflake (3PMSF) mark on the sidewall and will be offered in a wide range of sizes.

Podium finish for Maxxis in 235/45 R18 summer tyre test

When evaluating the latest crop of tyres for the coming summer season, Germany’s Autozeitung opted to look at ten brands of size 235/45 R18 rubber. We weren’t especially surprised to see the Continental PremiumContact 6, last year’s runner-up, in first place and the Michelin Primacy 4 in second, but it was nice to see the Maxxis Premitra HP5 acquaint itself with the victors’ podium.

Benack heading Continental’s reorganised Fleet Solutions department

As part of previously-announced structural changes, Continental has merged several of its replacement truck tyre functions in the Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region. The Conti360° Fleet Services business, which includes ContiPressureCheck and ContiConnect, has been brought together with the ContiLifeCycle business, comprising retreading and casing management services, to form the Fleet Solutions department. Ralf Benack is heading up this department as Director Fleet Solutions.

Auto Bild summer tyre test: Elimination round

Shortlisting has taken place for the Auto Bild 2019 summer tyre test, with a starting field of 53 candidates reduced to 20 finalists in the initial round. The size 225/45 R17 91/94 W/Y tyres selected for further testing mainly come from the premium and mid-range segments, while the budget segment was well-represented in the group of 33 tyres eliminated from proceedings. Disappointingly, the group also included two tyre brands belonging to leading manufacturers – both delivered ‘bottom ten’ results.

Continental sponsors Tour de France 2019

Continental has agreed to sponsor the Tour de France as one of the Tour’s five Main Partners – alongside LCL, E.Leclerc, Krys and Skoda. As a result of the deal, the Continental logo will appear on the arch above the finish line as well as on the “flamme rouge” arch, one kilometre from the finish. As a further benefit of the enhanced visibility, a representative of Continental will present the trophy to the stage winner on the podium.
