Continental recalls 67,128 tyres across Europe, including 477 in the UK

Continental today announced a voluntary tyre replacement program for 67,128 ContiEcoContact 5 tyres in size 235/55 R 17 103 H XL across Europe. However, the number of tyres being voluntarily recalled in the UK is far lower, with just 477 ContiEcoContact 5 tyres sold in the UK replacement market covered by the announcement. The reason for the recall? “In rare cases, if the affected tyres are used over a longer or repeated period of time, with heavy loading or possible overloading, a sudden loss of air may occur.”

Falken tyres OE on Audi A3

In July, Falken Tyre Europe announced that its Falken Ziex ZE310A Ecorun was an original equipment tyre for the Audi A3 TFSI e hybrid. This supply agreement has now been extended to other Audi A3 models. Falken is shipping Ziex ZE310 Ecorun tyres in size 205/55R16 91V to the Audi plant in Ingolstadt, Germany. All such tyres will bear the AO – Audi Original – mark on the sidewall.

Goodyear tyres for Cupra’s first electric model

When we first reported Goodyear’s provision of original equipment tyres to Cupra, the arrangement involved a single size of Eagle F1 SuperSport for the Formentor VZ5. The tyre maker’s OE supply arrangement with Cupra has since expanded with the selection of a range of Goodyear summer tyres as original equipment fitments for the Cupra Born, the brand’s first fully electric road car.

Tyres-N-Parts begins rollout with launch in Germany

Tyres-N-Parts. This familiar-sounding name belongs to a new B2B digital sales platform aimed at car dealerships and workshops as well as tyre dealers. The Michelin-backed venture is initially launching in Germany and aims to act as an online one-stop-shop for tyres and automotive spare parts. Tyres-N-Parts believes it will become “a model that will define the future of tyre and parts retailing.”

Yokohama Rubber announces record earnings

Talk at Yokohama Rubber is of record earnings for the first nine months of a fiscal year. The company reports that between the start of January and the end of September 2021, profit attributable to owners of parent increased approximately tenfold year-on-year, to 43.5 billion yen (£284.9 million). Operating profit was up sevenfold, to 59.3 billion yen (£388.4 million) and business profit rose approximately fourfold, to 37.1 billion yen (£243.0 million). Sales revenue was up 22.3 per cent, to 460.5 billion yen (£3.0 billion).

Kumho tyres OE on Hyundai Staria

Hyundai has selected the Kumho PorTran KC53 as the standard tyre for its new Staria MPV. Kumho primarily designed the KC53 for European vans and LCVs, and it is an upgraded version of this pattern that it is now supplying in two sizes – 215/65R17C 108/105H and 235/55R18 104H XL – for fitment on the Staria. Kumho comments that the popular tyre is “recognised for its high durability, low wear rate and notable handling performance,” and is “tailor made for the climate and road conditions that prevail in Europe.”

Nokian Tyres: Healthy YTD sales

Apollo Tyres: Cost of raw materials, chip shortage impacts on operating performance

For the three months to 30 September 2021, the second quarter of its 2021-22 financial year, Apollo Tyres reports consolidated revenue of Rs 50.77 billion (£493.84 million). This represents an 18 per cent increase over the same period of the previous fiscal year. EBITDA decreased 9.8 per cent year-on-year, to Rs 6.38 billion (£62.06 million) with a margin of 12.6 per cent (16.5 per cent in Q2 2020-21). Net profit amounted to Rs 1.74 billion (£16.93 million).

End-of-life tyres: Nexolub to market oils from L4T facility

Life for Tyres (L4T) Group has signed a ten-year offtake agreement with Spanish base oils supplier Nexolub to market oils extracted from end-of-life tyres processed at the plant it is currently setting up in Puertollano, Spain. The L4T facility is scheduled to be completed in December and become operational the following month with an annual capacity of 27,000 tonnes – a quantity equivalent to eight per cent of the end-of-life tyres generated in the country each year – it will be one of the largest facilities of its type in Europe.

Jamie Chadwick has once again been crowned champion of the Hankook-shod W Series. With a commanding double win on the final stop of the eight-race tour, at the Circuit of The Americas in Austin, Texas, the British driver successfully defended her title with a fourth win for the season.
