Alliance name comes to Chelsea FC sleeve ahead of car tyre range’s European launch

In addition to its current shirt sponsorship with Chelsea Football Club, Yokohama Rubber has gained jersey sleeve sponsorship for the 2017-18 season. In addition to the Yokohama Tyres logo prominently featured across the chest of the Chelsea FC jersey these past two seasons, the new jerseys worn by players during Premier League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup matches will feature the logo of the company’s recently-acquired Alliance Tyres brand on the jersey’s left sleeve. The new jersey made its debut at Chelsea’s pre-season match with Arsenal at the ‘Bird’s Nest’ in Beijing, China on 22 July.

Abu Dhabi firm invests in Nexen Tire, signs MoU

Abu Dhabi-based investor Mubadala Investment Company has Nexen Tire on its radar, and this has led to the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the two firms. According to Nexen Tire, the agreement its chief executive officer Travis (Ho-chan) Kang formalised yesterday with Khaldoon Khalifa Al Mubarak, Mubadala’s managing director and group chief executive officer, sets out ways and means for both parties to “explore strategic partnership opportunities.” Mubadala has directly invested into Nexen as part of the agreement, however so far the tyre maker hasn’t disclosed the extent of this investment.

Nürburgring 6h: All-Michelin podium in LM GTE Pro

Dunlop is by no means the only tyre maker present in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC), and following the weekend’s 6 Hours of Nürburgring race in Germany, Michelin reports that its partners were able to “benefit fully from the performance potential of their tyres” thanks to low track temperatures of between 19°C and 26°C.

Continental tops Auto Express tyre test

The current issue of Auto Express looks at the best tyres available in Britain, and Continental is very happy with the outcome of this year’s test. Its ContiPremiumContact 5 has been voted the top tyre in the publication’s evaluation of 11 size 205/55R16 summer tyres, and Continental notes that the award “recognises the ContiPremiumContact 5 across a broad spectrum, taking top spot for dry handling, wet handling and wet braking.”

ETRMA: Tyre sales down in Q2 2016

The European Tyre Manufacturers’ Association (ETRMA) reports a sluggish second quarter of 2017. According to the association, members’ sales “slowed down significantly” during the three months to 30 June compared with the first quarter of the year, and were also below sales achieved in the second quarter of 2016. Performance in all segments was negative, however this trend was particularly strong in the consumer segment.

July launch for Point S all-season tyre range

After gaining a favourable response from its SummerStar and WinterStar tyre lines and in response to market demand, Point S Development has added an all-season product to its private brand range. The new tyre is called the Point S 4 Seasons and, as is the case with the existing private brand lines, is designed and manufactured by “one of the largest manufacturers in Europe.” Although Point S Development doesn’t disclose the identity of this tyre maker in its announcement of the 4 Seasons’ launch, it is well known that the retail network collaborated with Continental (which recently launched its first all-season tyre for Europe, the AllSeasonContact) to develop its private brand.

Goodyear: SUV/4×4 sales projections “good news for premium brands”

For Goodyear, 13 is by no means an unlucky number – with the addition of the Wrangler All-Terrain Adventure (See T&A May 2017), this is the number of products in the brand’s SUV/4x4 tyre portfolio. Towards the end of June, we were given the opportunity to experience the new tyre’s performance off-road, and in addition to providing us with access to all the mud we could ever wish for, this also gave us the chance to gain an overview of the market for these products.

Korean OEMs switching to European tyre brands

Sales of imported tyres in Korea increased by more than 40 per cent in the January to April period when compared with 2016 figures, according to the Korea Tire Manufacturers Association (KOTMA).

If this pace continues, imported tyres will set a record high this year. According to KOTMA, this is largely due to Hyundai Motor and its smaller affiliate Kia Motors introducing imported tyres on their models, media said.
