Cooper Tire & Rubber: Sales stable, net income down 37% in Q2 2017

While unit volumes and net sales at Cooper Tire & Rubber remained little unchanged compared with the second quarter of last year, rising raw material costs ensured that income was significantly down in the three months to 30 June 2017. And although raw material costs are rescinding from the peaks seen earlier in the year, the tyre maker is keeping an eye out for further fluctuations.

Working through the downturn: Titan International increases net sales, reports $6.5 million loss

The year-on-year gain in net sales seen at Titan International in the opening quarter of this year has continued in the second. For the three months to 30 June 2017, the manufacturer of off-highway tyres, wheels, assemblies and undercarriage products reports net sales of US$364.4 million, an increase of 10.4 per cent on the second quarter of 2016. Net sales for the first half of the year amount to $721.9 million, up 10.7 per cent from a year earlier.

Continental tyre prices going up

According to several German media sources, the price of Continental tyres will increase in the second half of this year. Wolfgang Schäfer, chief financial officer at Continental, indicates that tyre prices will go up by between three and five per cent in order to compensate for higher natural rubber costs.

Two thirds of drivers unaware of tyre labelling

New research from Milton Keynes-based Just Tyres reveals drivers’ awareness of 2012’s EU tyre label legislation is low. More than two thirds (67 per cent) of drivers are unaware of EU legislation and only just under a sixth of drivers (15.5 per cent) even knew that the legislation existed.

Back in 2012, the tyre industry experienced a major shake up when EU tyre labelling for all UK tyre manufacturers, distributors and retailers was introduced. From then on, every tyre needed to be tested and measured for three specific ratings; fuel efficiency, wet grip and noise levels.

Another Bridgestone podium at Suzuka 8 Hours

Bridgestone says it “swept the podium” at the 40th Coca-Cola Zero Suzuka 8 Hours Endurance Road Race. In addition to dominating the podium for the sixth consecutive occasion, each of the first ten racers across the line competed on Bridgestone tyres.

Thanks to experience gained with the Geomax range in MXGP competition, Dunlop says its newest product, the Geomax MX12, benefits from three new design features that deliver a “significant step forward in performance over its MX11 forerunner.”

Giti Tire extends evo track day partnership, focus on GT Radial SportActive

Giti Tire has extended its track day partnership with leading performance car publication evo into 2017. The tyre manufacturer will focus particularly on the promotion of the GT Radial SportActive, targeting all event attendees and evo magazine readers. Throughout the year five track evenings will take place, with three at Rockingham Motor Speedway in May, August and September and two at Bedford Autodrome in July and September.

Membat shares results of further TÜV SÜD tests

Following on from the TÜV SÜD testing carried out for Membat last year, the tyre brand commissioned the testing and certification specialist to once again compare Membat tyres against rival products. This time the Membat Passion was tested in size 205/55 R16 91 V against B segment brand products manufactured by Michelin and Continental (Membat hasn’t disclosed the specific brand or product family). Membat comments that “the results speak for themselves.”

Michelin: Sales up 7.5% in H1 2017

During the first half of the year, Michelin increased both sales and net income on the back of higher volumes. Net sales were up 7.5 per cent to 11.1 billion euros in the six months to 30 June, and while operating income declined 0.8 per cent year-on-year to 1.4 billion euros (with the margin down 1.1 per cent to 12.6 per cent), the tyre maker described this result as “stable and in line with the Group’s roadmap.” Net income rose 12.2 per cent to 863 million euros.

Tractamotors wins Pirelli 4×4 Key Dealer of the Year 2016

Pirelli has named Tractamotors in Cavan, Ireland as 4×4 Key Dealer of the Year award, for its focus on excellence in customer service. This is the second year Pirelli has provided this award to one of its exclusive 4×4 Key Dealer Club member tyre dealers. Each dealer nominated a depot and was then subjected to three independently run mystery shop audits by phone. Judging took into account everything from the way a call was answered and time taken to answer, to general attitude over the phone and product knowledge.

UK government is pro-retreading, but what about anti-dumping measures?

Perhaps the most high profile dignitary at Michelin’s “Stoke 2018” event was Clare Perry MP, Minister of State for Climate change and Industrial Strategy. Bearing in mind that retreading and casing inspection/logistics make up such a significant part of what goes on at Michelin’s Campbell Road, Stoke-on-Trent site, and given that over-supply of low-cost truck tyres from China has had a marked effect on this part of the business, Tyres & Accessories was keen to ask Clare Perry what the government can do to help.

Tire+ partnering with CRIA for inaugural 2017 event

From 20 to 22 September 2017 China Rubber Industry Association (CRIA) and China United Rubber Corporation (CURC) will jointly host the new Tire+ tyre trade show at the Shanghai New International Expo Center. The Tire+ expo will be held alongside the 17th China RubberTech. According to the organisers the new show features six particular highlights, but first – before take a closer look at those – here’s a little background.

Alliance name comes to Chelsea FC sleeve ahead of car tyre range’s European launch

In addition to its current shirt sponsorship with Chelsea Football Club, Yokohama Rubber has gained jersey sleeve sponsorship for the 2017-18 season. In addition to the Yokohama Tyres logo prominently featured across the chest of the Chelsea FC jersey these past two seasons, the new jerseys worn by players during Premier League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup matches will feature the logo of the company’s recently-acquired Alliance Tyres brand on the jersey’s left sleeve. The new jersey made its debut at Chelsea’s pre-season match with Arsenal at the ‘Bird’s Nest’ in Beijing, China on 22 July.
