MRF displays expanded motorsport offering at Autosport

As a top 15 global tyre manufacturer, India’s MRF continue to operate under the radar of many in Europe, though in motorsport it has rapidly developed from the UK launch of its range at the 2016 Autosport International show into an increasingly significant position. Globally, MRF has been recognised within motorsport circles since the late 1970s, when it became the most important tyre supplier to touring cars in its domestic market, with karting, rallying and various other motorsport events to follow.

Giti secures first European SUV OE fitment with Groupe Renault agreement

Giti Tire has secured a second original equipment (OE) homologation fitment with Groupe Renault, and its first SUV placement for the Giti brand in Europe. The GitiPremium PX1 SUV, in size 215/65 R16 98H, is fitted to the new Dacia Duster, available in every major European market. The manufacturer states that the tyre’s key attributes include low noise and exceptional grip.

Avon supports Bloodhound engineering adventure

Avon Tyres has confirmed its sponsorship of the Bloodhound Project, centred on Bloodhound SSC, a supersonic car that is designed to go faster than the speed of sound. Avon is supplying tyres suitable for desert use to Bloodhound’s essential support vehicles and is also looking to produce a rubber tyre for runway testing of the land speed record car.

NTC to build greenfield tyre factory in Saudi Arabia

National Tire Company (NTC) has unveiled plans to build a greenfield car and truck tyre factory in Jubail, Saudi Arabia. The goal is to focus on “premium” tyre production only.

The investment is owned by HRH Prince Fahad Bin Abdul-Rahman Bin Abdul-Aziz Al-Saud. According to NTC, the plant will be the first of its kind in Saudi Arabia and “one of the biggest and most modern individual tyre factories in the world”. The factory will make 16 million car tyres and 6 million truck tyres a year, with a workforce of 4000 at full capacity.

NTC will work with the Finnish Black Donuts Engineering Inc in the construction of the factory.

But this wasn’t the only subject being read. Coverage of various countries’ decisions to ban combustion engines during the next decade or two was a top story on tyrepress.com last year, and it was also talk of the wider automotive industry.

Kirkby: Tyre Wholesaler of the Year growing in 2018

After being named Truck & Agricultural Tyre Supplier of The Year in both 2015 and 2016, last year Kirkby Tyres went home from the NTDA Tyre Industry Awards ceremony in October with the trophy for Tyre Wholesaler of the Year. The 2017 award was for Kirkby perhaps the crowning moment in a year that saw its original equipment and OE2 business continue to grow as well as work progress on its warehousing expansion programme. This expansion will be completed during the course of 2018 and is expected to enhance Kirkby’s operations. The wholesaler also anticipates an increase in its OE/OE2 activities and is introducing several other important agricultural products.

Terrific Profit-Making System?

When it became a legal requirement for all new vehicles produced and sold in Europe to be fitted with TPMS (Tyre Pressure Monitoring System) back in November 2014 the concept was still unfamiliar to the majority of motorists. In the main it was drivers of early adopter, generally high-end, marques such as BMW and Mercedes who got the benefits in terms of enhanced safety, tyre life and fuel economy. Indeed, even three years ago those manufacturers had been fitting TPMS as standard for more than two decades.

Michelin, Sumitomo Corporation to pool tyre wholesale resources in USA & Mexico

With the creation of a 50-50 joint venture, Michelin North America Inc. says it and Sumitomo Corporation of Americas will form the second-largest player in the United States’ wholesale tyre market. The two companies have entered into a definitive agreement to combine their respective North American replacement tyre distribution and related service operations. The transaction is subject to customary approvals.

Sri Lanka tyre manufacturer signs recycled carbon black order

A leading tyre manufacturer has placed a first order on Swedish tyre pyrolysis firm Enviro’s recycled carbon black (EnviroCB) for immediate delivery.

“Initially the order volume is small, but is expected to increase significantly over time. The customer is a global manufacturer of tyres and rubber applications and this order relates to industrial tyres”, says Thomas Sörensson, CEO of Enviro.

GRI installs first Marangoni Machine in Sri Lanka

GRI reports that it is the first industrial tyre manufacturer in Sri Lanka to employ the benefits of the latest model of Marangoni Alpha Agrifast Italy. According to the company, this machine is “a compact, user friendly and advanced extruder server that is interfaced to tyre building bay drums for producing components such as tread base, tread cap, sidewalls all with joint less, in real time with the highest degree of accuracy and at high speed”. This machine is to be utilized at GRI’s latest state-of-the-art factory in Sri Lanka, set to commence production in January 2018. This brand-new factory will be the largest in Sri Lanka dedicated to produce specialty tyres and the first to produce radial agriculture tyres.

STARCO appoints Agriest its aftermarket distributor in France

As of 1 January 2018, Agriest will act as the French market distributor for STARCO’s aftermarket range. This new agreement allows Agriest to offer its customers the STARCO product range, excepting made-to-measure and dual wheels. Agriest will primarily distribute STARCO’s wheel and tyre solutions for tractors, utility vehicles and agricultural implements; wheel and tyre solutions for lawn and garden will be handled by PVP, a subsidiary of the Sterenn & Co group.

MotoGP: Michelin to continue ‘evolution’ approach in 2018

Having drawn upon experience in World Endurance and national championships when developing tyres for its return to MotoGP after an absence of seven years, in 2016 Michelin experienced an inaugural season in which it claimed to have engineered more developments than during its seven years working in other motorcycle racing disciplines. When the fun began again in Qatar in March, Michelin already had a season as tyre supplier under its belt, and accordingly the focus had shifted to building upon this flurry of engineering work.
