US requests information from Goodyear after ruling in alleged defective tyre case

A court in the US state of Arizona ruled on 3 April that Goodyear Tire & rubber cannot continue to keep court documents relating to an alleged defect in a Goodyear tyre secret. The ruling from the Superior Court of Arizona, Maricopa County, comes in the Haeger v. The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company personal injury case and follows a motion from non-profit organisation the Center for Auto Safety (CAS) to unseal court records and remove a protective order.

Absolute Alignment increases visibility with BTCC, British GT team support

Garage equipment distributor Absolute Alignment has announced two partnerships with UK race teams in the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) and British GT Championship. The company has become an Official Technical Partner to Power Maxed Racing in the BTCC, and will support Academy Motorsport’s Aston Martin V8 Vantage GT4 entries in British GT. The company supplies wheel alignment equipment to workshops of all sizes. Company director Chris Dear has been in the motor trade since 1996 and has commensurate in-depth product knowledge.

Baseball sponsorship: Westlake pairs up with San Diego Padres

Westlake tyre has struck a sponsorship deal with Major League Baseball’s San Diego Padres for the 2018 and 2019 seasons together with its US distributor, Tireco Inc. The sponsorship includes a signage package, on-site activation and hospitality opportunities for dealers and VIPs, aiming to improve the brand image and brand influence in the local market.

Cooper Tire gains two Great Wall awards

Cooper Tire Asia has earned the 2018 Statistical Quality Award and the Simultaneous Engineering (SE) Achievement Award from Great Wall Motors Company Limited. Great Wall is China’s largest SUV and pickup truck manufacturer, producing vehicles under the Haval and Great Wall brands. Cooper, which has been supplying original equipment tyres to Great Wall since 2011, was the only tyre company recognised by the automaker with these awards.

Why Doublestar’s Kumho purchase is a good idea

15 months after bidding got underway, Qingdao-based Doublestar and its consortium of Chinese banks and investors bought 45 per cent of the South Korean tyremaker Kumho Tire over the Easter weekend. Whatever other clauses are written into the deal, following the release of shares issued for the purpose of the sale, Kumho Tire’s creditors will own a 23.1 per cent shareholding in the tyre maker, down from 42.01 per cent. This makes the Chinese tyre firm controlling shareholders in South Korea’s Kumho Tire.

Falken drift driver James Deane returns to defend Formula Drift title

Falken drift driver and 2017 Formula Drift champion James Deane returns to the defend his title crown this week at the opening round of Formula Drift (6-7 April 2018, Long Beach, California). The Irish driver will race for the Worthouse Drift Team in his Falken Tire Nissan S15 drift car. He steered the car to four victories during the 2017 season, which led to his championship title and Falken being named Tire Manufacturer Champion for the second consecutive year.

Bridgestone launches Battlax Adventure A41, Battlax Sport Touring T31

Bridgestone has launched two new Battlax tyres respectively for the touring and adventure segments. The Adventure A41 is designed to provide improved wet grip and handling to help trail on-road bikers take on varied conditions. Meanwhile the manufacturer states that it has upgraded its motorcycle line-up with the launch of Battlax Sport Touring T31.

When it brings a new, special version of its Pilot Sport Cup 2 to market this month, Michelin will become the first manufacturer to sell a connected tyre solution for private cars. The Pilot Sport Cup 2 Connect is a tyre aimed at amateur drivers who take part in track days and other circuit events. When paired with the newly-launched Michelin Track Connect solution, it can provide a wealth of real time tyre information.

Bohnenkamp growing in range and reach

The Bohnenkamp name has been a familiar one to us for some years now, not least through its acquisition of the divested STARCO aftermarket business in 2016, and when we visited the wholesaler’s headquarters for the first time recently we were welcomed by a company that is still growing: Vast two-storey warehouses are currently being erected alongside the existing warehousing complex, and when we met with Gregor Rüth, chief executive officer of the Bohnenkamp Group, we did so in an administrative building so new it was still receiving the finishing touches.

Goodyear FACEs the future with new tyre concepts

Goodyear’s latest concept tyre, introduced at the 2018 Geneva International Motor Show in March, once again sees the company look forward in a bid to lead discussions relating to the future of mobility. Hankook adding truck tyre production to European plant

With an investment of approximately 290 million euros, Hankook Tire is adding a truck tyre production unit to its factory in Rácalmás, Hungary. Work on this expansion project – the fourth since the plant opened in 2007 – will begin in June, with production expected to commence in June 2020. The truck tyre production unit will have the capacity to make 550,000 tyres a year, and its opening will create around 150 new jobs.
