In-person TyreSafe Briefing scheduled for 7 July at National Football Centre

The 2022 TyreSafe Briefing will return as an in-person event on Thursday 7 July after two years of online presentations. St George’s Park in Burton Upon Trent, home of the National Football Centre, will host the briefing, featuring a high-profile line up of road safety stakeholders and tyre industry representatives who will deliver key information, demonstrations, and interactive exhibits. The event is open to pre-registered supporters and road safety stakeholders, with places allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Stuart Jackson, TyreSafe chair, calls the briefing “a huge milestone” for the organisation.

From bottles to tyres: Continental introduces recycled PET products

Selected sizes within the Continental PremiumContact 6, EcoContact 6 and AllSeasonContact tyre ranges will now contain recycled polyester yarn obtained from plastic PET bottles. The recycled yarn completely replaces conventional polyester within the tyre casing, with around 40 PET bottles needed for a typical set of passenger car tyres.

Austrian testers less cheerful about cheap tyres

When we published German motoring association ACE’s coverage of the tyre test it jointly undertook with Austrian counterpart ARBÖ, we commented that there were “no bad tyres” in the size 195/55 R16 evaluation. The ARBÖ begs to differ, as it has consigned two tyres to the undesirable ‘not recommendable’ category.

Nokian Tyres staying in Russia

Nokian Tyres has explained the decision to retain its manufacturing operation in Russia, a facility that reportedly produced 82 per cent of Nokian’s passenger and light commercial vehicle tyres last year. The Finnish tyre maker states that by continuing to operate the passenger car tyre factory in Vsevolozhsk, Russia it wants to “make sure that the factory is operated and controlled by Nokian Tyres also in the future.”

Continental and Pyrum sign development agreement, recovered carbon black supply deal

Continental AG has signed a development agreement with tyre pyrolysis firm Pyrum Innovations. Continental has held “a strategic minority stake” in Pyrum since its IPO in 2021. The new deal means, among other things, high-quality recovered carbon black (rCB) is to be obtained for Continental’s tyre production. Continental’s subsidiary, Reifen-Entsorgungsgesellschaft (REG), will begin supplying end-of-life tyres from the premium manufacturer to Pyrum this month. In the long term, the aim is to establish a circular economy concept for the recycling of end-of-life tyres.

According to the company, the results confirm both Andrés Neumáticos’s position as “the undisputed leader in the tyre distribution sector in the Iberian Peninsula” and its ongoing strategy.

MDF Truck Tyres credits CAM fitter-force with business improvement

Jethro ‘J’ Poole is the manager and commercial tyre technician at M.D.F Truck Tyres, the commercial tyre arm and the newest of the M.D.F family of businesses. Operating from its base in Great Yarmouth, M.D.F Transport specialises in transport for the wind energy, oil and gas industries and transporting abnormal loads. Its 25 lorries and 70 trailers are maintained by M.D.F Commercials, its sister commercial workshop.

‘Tyre Extinguishers’ deflate 100s of SUV tyres across 13 UK locations

A campaign group made up of anonymous climate change activists reports that it has deflated the tyres of hundreds of SUVs across more than 13 locations in the UK. The group, which calls itself “The Tyre Extinguishers” claims that it “disarmed” SUVs in Chelsea, Chiswick, Harley Street, Hampstead Heath, Notting Hill, Belgravia, Clapham, Brighton, Bristol, Cambridge, Sheffield, Liverpool and Edinburgh on the evening of 7 March 2022. However, it is less clear whether they considered the safety and indeed environment implications of such vehicles driving on underinflated tyres.

Peugeot, Vauxhall models rolling on Continental tyres

Continental says it has “developed a tyre with a significantly improved rolling resistance” for Peugeot, DS and Vauxhall vehicles with electric drives and combustion engines. Stellantis will factory-fit this 17-inch tyre on all electric SUVs, the Peugeot e-2008, the Vauxhall Mokka-E and the all-electric DS 3 Crossback E-Tense, as well as the combustion engine versions of these models.
