Trico triumphs in inaugural Trico Cup after thrilling penalty shootout against media

Trico won a dramatic penalty shootout to win The Trico Cup at The Trico Stadium, despite the media opposition staging a magnificent second-half comeback. Trico’s Ian Beckett was the hero – and man of the match – after saving two spot kicks, while Trico’s penalty takers netted all four attempts to ensure The Trico Cup went back to Pontypool. Trico dominated the first-half and took a deserved lead thanks to goals from Trico -sponsored race driver, Jemma Moore, and Trico Customer Services Administrator, Gavin Moulton.

Fintyre acquisition shows fast-growing firm is ‘doing OK’

European finTyre Distribution (EFD) has been growing rapidly since its private equity owners Bain Capital backed the acquisition of Italian tyre wholesaler Fintyre back in March 2017. Since then the company has been on the acquisition trail, buying Pneusmarket and Franco Gomma in Italy as well as Reiff and most recently Reifen Krieg in Germany – all in order to build a “European tyre distribution group”. UK’s RMA and BTMA amalgamate to strengthen retreading representation

Considering the evolution of the retreading market in the UK to fewer and larger players, the Retread Manufacturers’ Association (RMA) has been faced with somewhat dwindling numbers of members. Consolidation has meant fewer distinct companies, which has in turn made for a reduced membership base. However, this does not necessarily equate to the reduced vitality of retreading in the UK – while certainly facing many challenges from the availability of lower-cost new tyres imported from the Far East, retreading has continued to prove relevant to a greater or lesser degree depending on prevailing macroeconomic winds.

Vipal celebrates the results of first Tire Cologne

Between 29 May and 1 June Vipal Rubber attended The Tire Cologne, in Germany. On the trade show’s first day, Vipal Rubber representatives were among the featured speakers at the “Global Retreading Conference”. Specifically, Vipal Rubber’s Head of International Business, Leandro Rigon, was invited to talk about the tyre retreading situation in Latin America, also representing ALARNEU (Latin American Association of Tire Retread).

US tyre cord makers could close due to steel tariffs

In mid-June US president Donald Trump announced plans to impose 25 per cent tariffs on US$50 billion worth of Chinese goods. However, the above round of tariffs was actually an additional wave that followed as part of the Trump administration’s ongoing trade war with China. Steel is at the centre of this dispute, with President Trump suggesting that China is dumping steel in America. But now US tyre cord makers could close due to steel tariffs.

Inaugural Fitter-Force forum commits to fleet tyre service connectivity

The inaugural Fitter-Force Forum on 12 June in Birmingham, hosted by CAM was attended by medium-sized fleet tyre service specialists from the UK and Republic of Ireland, including AA Tyre Master, Paul Jarrold Tyres, S Tyres and Three Counties Tyre Services, which are encouraged to be early adopters of the new Fitter-Force platform. The participants benefited from a demonstration of Fitter-Force, which combines the operational responsiveness of digital tablet technology through e-jobsheet with premier tyre management software for all fleet tyre work for car, van, bus, agri or truck as well offering comprehensive, generic tyre management capabilities.

Michelin Auto Professional dealers complete new Licensed Retail Tyre Technician course

Eight technicians representing Michelin Auto Professional dealers across the UK and Ireland have become the first to complete Michelin’s new Licensed Retail Tyre Technician course – with a further eight scheduled to take part in July.

The group of 16 are undertaking the two-day course as part of Michelin’s Tyre Academy 2018 – a series of annual events run by Michelin to help advocate dealers retain the best talent within their dealerships.

ExxonMobil opens Singapore butyl and resins plants

On 21 June 2018 ExxonMobil announced it had started production of hydrogenated hydrocarbon resin and halobutyl rubber at its integrated manufacturing complex in Singapore, the company’s largest integrated refining and petrochemical complex in the world. ExxonMobil’s new Escorez hydrogenated hydrocarbon resins plant will be the world’s largest with a capacity of 90,000 tonnes per year, and will meet long-term demand growth for hot-melt adhesives used in packaging or baby diapers. The new 140,000-tonnes-per-year butyl plant will produce premium halobutyl rubber used by manufacturers for tyres to better maintain inflation to improve fuel economy.

European FinTyre Distribution buys Reifen Krieg

European FinTyre Distribution Limited (EfTD), one of the largest Pan European tyre distributors, has agreed to acquire the privately held Reifen Krieg Group, a leading full-range tyre wholesaler in Germany. As a result, EfTD is set to become the market leader in two key European countries, Germany and Italy, with 1.1 billion euros of total revenue. According to EfTD, Reifen Krieg’s current owners, Holger Krieg and Tobias Fink, will continue as the group’s managing directors
