Platinum – Bridgestone tyre plant gains top Caterpillar certification

Caterpillar has awarded the Bridgestone Americas agricultural tyre plant in Des Moines, USA the highest level in the Caterpillar Supplier Quality Excellence Process (SQEP) certification – Platinum Level for a second consecutive year. These back-to-back platinum awards follow three years of Gold Level SQEP certifications. Bridgestone Americas says receiving the latest Platinum Level certification “represents a significant milestone” for Bridgestone and the Firestone agricultural tyre team.

Sales, profit up at Yokohama Rubber in Q2 2018

Yokohama Rubber Co., Ltd. reports that its sales revenue increased 1.8 per cent in the first half of 2018, to 309.7 billion yen (£2.2 billion). Business profit (sales revenue less the sum of cost of sales and selling, general and administrative expenses) rose 9.5 per cent year on year to 23.8 billion yen (£166.7 million) and operating profit was up 32.3 per cent to 26.4 billion yen (£184.9 million). The company says these operating profit and sales revenue figures were the highest it ever recorded. Profit attributable to owners of parent increased 19.2 per cent year-on-year, to 17.8 billion yen (£124.7 million).

DTM, Hankook returning to Brands Hatch

Between 2006 and 2013, the DTM touring car series was a regular visitor to the Brands Hatch circuit in Kent, and following a four-year hiatus DTM drivers will race there once again this weekend. Instead of using the 1.2-mile Indy circuit favoured in past years, the action in 2018 will take place on the full, 2.4-mile GP circuit.

Absolute Alignment advising car check essentials for safer holiday motoring

Responding to statistics showing that a third of all tyre related incidents occur during the summer months, released as part of TyreSafe’s summer motoring guide, Absolute Alignment advises all motorists holidaying by car to check tyre pressures and wheel alignment before taking to the road. According to the Department for Transport’s data, despite the UK’s cold weather and difficult road conditions from October through to March, it is actually July and August when tyre related accidents are at their most frequent.

Make tariffs great again

The tyre industry has seen its fair share of import tariffs in recent years. The largest scale of these, across the widest range of products, was initiated by the US against Chinese produced car tyres in 2009. That president has been and gone since then (as have further tariffs on car tyres and OTR tyres), but still tariffs are making a huge impact on the tyre industry in the USA and beyond.

Hankook Tire: Operating profit down 10.4% in Q2 2018

At KRW 1.67 trillion (£1.14 billion), sales were up 2.3 per cent year-on-year for Hankook Tire in the second quarter of 2018, however this didn’t stop operating profit slipping 10.4 per cent to KRW 183.2 billion (£125.3 million). According to the tyre maker, operating profit was reduced compared with the same period of last year due to initial operating costs in its tyre plant in Tennessee, USA as well as increasing competition in the Korean market. The operating margin decreased from 12.3 per cent to 10.7 per cent.

Giti Tire secures first VW Fun Cup UK podium finish at European event

GT Radial’s VW Fun Cup UK team has secured its first ever podium finish, taking third place in the European event at Circuit Zandvoort, Holland. The team was led by Giti Tire’s seasoned race and senior test engineer, Ellis Hadley and ADAC GT Masters Series competitor and Hannover R&D Centre student, André Gies, battling a 26-car field, early safety car interruptions, a non-functioning lap timer and a broken radio in their dash for the dais.

AXCR: Hanawa’s rally team gains Yokohama support

Yokohama Rubber is supporting the team led by Ikuo Hanawa in Asia’s largest cross-country rally, which begins 12 August. The company’s support for Hanawa’s team in the Asia Cross Country Rally 2018 (AXCR) includes supplying Geolandar M/T G003 tyres.

NTDA: EC anti-subsidy decision ‘no great surprise’

Following decisions on the part of the European Commission (EC) to review its Chinese truck tyre anti-dumping tariffs and to decide against implementing anti-subsidy remedies against Chinese-produced tyres for the time being, the industry itself has been responding to the news. For its part, the UK’s National Tyre Distributors Association (NTDA) was not shocked by the news that the EC is not planning to implement anti-subsidy (otherwise known as counter-veiling duties) and highlighted difficulties associated with their implementation.

Zenises buys Vacu-Lug

Zenises has bought Grantham-based Vacu-Lug. The acquisition means Vacu-Lug remains the only significantly sized independent retreader in the UK. With an annual truck tyre retread capacity of 120,000, Zenises representatives described the firm as the largest independent retreader in Europe.

Michelin gains Paccar ’10 PPM’ award

Every year, US-based truck manufacturer Paccar Inc. recognises suppliers who meet or exceed its ‘10 PPM’ quality standard – the equivalent of ten or fewer defective parts for every million components shipped to PACCAR. This year, PACCAR acknowledged 268 suppliers in 26 countries with a 10 PPM Supplier Quality award for achieving this high level of quality performance, and additionally for meeting meet demanding criteria for delivery performance, customer support, and business impact.
