Apollo Tyres invests £5 million in London digital innovation hub

Apollo Tyres is investing £5 million in a London-based digital innovation hub as part of a five-year growth plan, which involves significant investment in technology and cloud infrastructure. The announcement is set against the backdrop of UK prime minister Boris Johnson’s visit to India to discuss UK-India economic partnership, with Johnson specifically commenting on Apollo’s investment.

Eden Tyres set to open 20th branch

Eden Tyres & Servicing has started work on its 20th tyre centre. According to the company, the latest addition is “on target to be opening in a few months’ time”. Eden representatives haven’t revealed where branch number 20 will be located, but they have confirmed that it will be one of at least two branches to open in 2022.

Grupo Alves Bandeira show Matrax tyres at Motortec

When the Motortec aftermarket exhibition takes place in Madrid (from 20-23 April), Grupo Alves Bandeira will present its range of Matrax brand tyres. According to the company, this is the first time that Matrax Tires have been displayed in Europe. In addition, Grupo Alves Bandeira will also use its presence at the Madrid event to present its AB and Matrax branded lubricants and batteries.

Hankook now supplying numerous tyres for Mercedes S-Class

It is the ‘MO’ label on the sidewall that Hankook Tire is particularly proud of. The two letters stand for ‘Mercedes Original’, and only tyres that match strict quality criteria are approved as original equipment for Mercedes-Benz vehicles. These letters appear on the sides of three Hankook tyre models that Mercedes-Benz fits on the S-Class, continuing a supply arrangement that began almost a decade ago.

The BMW iX will be available with Goodyear tyres as original equipment. Goodyear is supplying two EfficientGrip Performance 2 dimensions for factory fitment on the new electric SAV.

This year’s best summer tyres

During the past couple of months, we’ve followed the performances of just under 200 tyre models and sizes in comparative tests published by major car magazines, specialist tyre sites and motoring organisations. The results suggest that replacement tyre buyers are spoiled for choice, with the test experts giving 41 of the products – including some affordably-priced models – a rating of ‘very good’ or better. At the other end of the scale, they considered 16 tyres ‘not recommendable’.

New tyre industry standard: Sailun introduces EcoPoint³ technology

Sailun Tire Group says it has developed a technology that will “create a rubber revolution in the tyre industry.” Utilising liquid phase mixing, this new proprietary technology is known as EcoPoint³. According to Sailun, EcoPoint³ matches or exceeds tyre performance across the three key functional attributes of rolling resistance, wear resistance and wet grip performance. It will, the tyre maker confidently adds, “change the way that tyres are manufactured.”

Nokian Tyres investing 106 million euros in new European factory

Nokian Tyres is expediting “plans to invest in new production capacity in Europe” in response to the sanctions against Russia, where the company has significant levels of tyre production. Specifically, Nokian’s board of directors will cut the dividend payable to shareholders by 106 million euros to fund the new capacity. Nokian Tyres will also increase capacity at its factories in Finland and the US with a view to becoming more geographically diversified in its manufacturing operations.

Apollo Tyres appoints Boerkamp Off-Highway Tyres director

Apollo Tyres has appointed Guido Boerkamp director of its Off-Highway Tyres (OHT) division. Boerkamp joined the company (then known as Vredestein) in 1995 as a product specialist for agricultural and industrial tyres. He subsequently worked as product manager, business development manager and head of product group, before leading Apollo Tyres’ European OHT R&D division. Boerkamp succeeds Ruud Nijland who is retiring after over a decade at the company in this position.

Ascenso Tyres UK continues supporting World Champion Clay Pigeon Shooter

The Ascenso Tyres UK team have expressed their continued support for 2021 World Champion Clay Pigeon Shooter Kallum Burrell as he prepares for the season ahead. Kallam become a double World Champion after winning as ‘High Gun’ at the 2021 Clay Pigeon Shooting Association (CPSA) World Sportrap Championships, where he took both senior and junior titles.

Nio ET7 wearing Continental tyres in China

Another original equipment approval for Continental, this time in China. Electric vehicle manufacturer Nio is equipping its new ET7 saloon for the Chinese market with 19- and 20-inch Continental EcoContact 6 tyres. Continental is exclusive supplier for 19-inch rim fitments.
