Dunlop’s long record of success at the Le Mans 24 hours and the Isle of Man TT was continued in 2018, though the tyre brand added victories in other four and two-wheel series too.
4x4/SUV and UHP markets continued to grow in 2018
As part of our review of 2018, Tyres & Accessories asked market research specialists to give an overview of some of the key trends that have taken place in the UK car, 4x4 and light truck replacement tyre market trends during the course of the year. In doing so, we have a good foundation for looking forward into 2019 and beyond. What we found was that UK tyre replacement market is increasingly high-performance and increasingly high-value.
GfK’s Panelmarket data compares the period between November 2016 and October 2017 with November 2017 to October 2018. Reading left to right, the infographic below shows the percentage share of the panelmarket broken down by vehicle type (passenger car, 4x4 including SUV and light commercial vehicle); key changes in the panelmarket during the last 12 months broken down by rim diameter; brand tier split; and the two five tyre sizes.

Automechanika Birmingham has announced that “Innovation” will be the leading theme for the 2019 event, held at Birmingham NEC on 4 to 6 June. According to the organisers the goal of the exhibition was “not only to continue the mature model of 2017, but also leverage the resources of the exhibition”. In practice this means leveraging the show’s ability to operate in both the business-to-business and business-to-consumer realms, specifically “the automobile industry chain, which is suitable for the post-automobile market consumption upgrade and individualized demand” as well as “tyres and aftermarket enterprises”.
Bruce’s Coaches operates some of National Express’s longest routes between Scotland and the south of England, with 14 Scania Caetano Levante coaches, which cover more than 5.6 million kilometres each year. The company recently moved this fleet to Michelin tyres and has reported some startling statistics; it says the brand’s drive axle tyres last up to 130,000km further compared to the previously fitted competitor brand.
Toyo Tire North America Manufacturing Inc. is set to create more than 150 jobs when it invests over US$138 million in its manufacturing operation in Cartersville, Georgia. According to an official announcement, new jobs will include positions in production, support and administration.

UK technology company Wheely-Safe has launched ‘Michelin Wheel Security and Tyre Pressure Management System Heavy Fleet’, a solution aimed at truck, bus, coach, trailer and heavy plant operators and designed to tackle the issues of wheel loss and brake and hub overheating. Wheely-Safe says this patented solution is the world’s first in-motion driver alert system that detects the onset of wheel loss before detachment; it also warns the driver of potential brake or hub issues that could lead to a fire if unchecked, as well as tyre over- or under-inflation.
Dutch tyre upcycling company and recovered carbon black (rCB) producer Black Bear has appointed Geert Glimmerveen its new chief financial officer. He brings with him more than 30 years’ experience in senior finance and executive positions in several leading companies.
For garages looking to increase the number of revenue-generating tasks they can complete, the increased efficiency of their equipment is of paramount importance. Most directly, changing a tyre more quickly and safely means more customers can be served – and of course billed. But the latest changer from Hunter, distributed in the UK by Pro-Align, offers the chance to increase the additional tasks its operator can complete through increased automation of the process.
Hofmann Megaplan’s Smart X tyre changer has been approved by BMW for installation in its franchise dealerships. Hofmann Megaplan states that the automated machine’s approval by the German marque backs up its quality and simplicity, as the manufacturer’s preference for runflat tyres presents more difficult wheel assemblies on which to perform the change.
