Triangle 4th in China Net Promoter Score (C-NPS) rankings

Triangle Tyre has climbed three places in the China Net Promoter Score (C-NPS). Triangle’s fourth place score of 24.6 was enough to see it rise above Continental (fifth) and Goodyear (sixth) in the table. It is the leading Chinese tyre brand according to the metric, with DoubleStar the next-best in seventh place. Michelin (32.0) retains its place at the top of the table, with Pirelli (29.3) and Bridgestone (25.3) rising two places to make up the rest of the podium.

Bumpy roads and leveraged buy-outs – reflections on the Goodyear/Cooper Tire integration

Goodyear’s $2.5 billion-dollar acquisition of Cooper is the biggest tyre industry news story of 2021 so far (click here for detailed analysis of the deal itself). But takeovers – especially those this big – are seldom easy. A large portion of the motivation behind the acquisition is to bolster Goodyear’s position in the high-value 4×4 and SUV tyre segments. So, with this in mind, what kind of terrain is the deal likely to encounter as the two companies make their way towards integration?

ADAC test: Falken “meets… all requirements of a premium tyre”

The Falken Azenis FK510 ultra high-performance tyre’s victory in the ADAC 2021 summer tyre test follows a “highly recommended” rating from both the Touring Club Switzerland (TCS) and the Austrian Automobile Touring Club (ÖAMTC) in their 2021 summer tyre tests. The tyre achieved the result in the 225/50 R17 17 Y tyre dimension. This size is suitable for numerous medium-sized vehicles such as the Audi A4 or the Volkswagen Passat. The result marks the second win for a Falken pattern in an ADAC summer tyre test.

Spike in tyre pyrolysis investment backed by flurry of related scientific research

We have all witnessed the recent spike in interest in tyre pyrolysis-related recycling during the last year or so. The concepts themselves are not new, so what is behind renewed interest and confidence in such projects? As well as an uptick in investment in tyre pyrolysis plants, the last few months have also seen the publication of a flurry of peer-reviewed research papers into different aspects of waste tyre pyrolysis. As part of this year’s annual Tyre Recycling feature, we took a look at the three most recent papers in order to find out more.

North American recall for Continental, Cooper tyre lines

Continental Tire the Americas is recalling more than 90,000 Continental, General Tire and Barum tyres in North America that have been over-cured and are thus at risk of developing breakages in the sidewall area. A separate recall of approximately 12,000 Cooper and Mastercraft tyres in North America is taking place due to a possible low tread gauge in the tyres’ shoulder slot area which could cause tread separation and sidewall failure.

Auto Bild summer tyre test: Hankook impresses in preliminary round

We’ll have to wait another fortnight to learn the winner of this year’s Auto Bild summer tyre test, but the motoring magazine has let the names of the finalists out of the bag. Of the more than 50 tyre brands that Auto Bild looked at – this year in size 205/55 R16 91V – just 20 remain for further, more intensive testing following the qualifying round. Hankook’s candidate tops the shortlist after achieving the best stopping distances in both the wet and dry braking tests.

Bridgestone, Arlanxeo & Solvay present efficiency-increasing tyre technology

Improving a tyre’s wear efficiency by up to 30 per cent while decreasing rolling resistance by up to six per cent without affecting any other performance area sounds like a tall order. But Bridgestone says that it has achieved this together with partners Arlanxeo and Solvay. The three firms presented Techsyn, the fruit of two years of collaboration, during an online presentation this afternoon.

Research: Retreads offer hyperelastic tyre characteristics

Does the hyper-elasticity of retreaded tyres impact their behavioural quality? Uday Gudsoorkar and Rupa Bindu, two researchers working within the department of mechanical engineering at the Dr DY Patil Institute of Technology in Pune, India sought to answer this question and more by using computer-aided finite element analysis. Their paper “Computer simulation of hyper elastic re-treaded tire rubber with ABAQUS”, which was published in November 2020 in Materials Today: Proceedings used a combination of qualitative and quantitative methodologies to measures forces across the tread belt in a compute simulation. These virtual samples were then compared with laboratory examples. According to the paper, the researchers’ findings are “promising to predict the behaviour of re-treaded tyre rubber” and can be “used to improve the product [retreaded truck tyres] and its utility in small tyre re-treaders, customers and policymakers.”

Yokohama addresses car ownership shift in mid-term plan

Urban planners anticipate a decline in individual car ownership and commensurate increase in use of infrastructure-type vehicles to move people and goods in years to come, and Yokohama Rubber is now planning for this in its newly-announced medium-term management plan, Yokohama Transformation 2023. The company intends this successor to the 2018-launched Grand Design 2020 (GD2020) three-year plan to “serve as the platform” for its growth over the next three years.

Covid year a catalyst for UK light vehicle tyre market trends

Common sense seems to dictate that when you tell the majority of the population to stay home, vehicle utilisation – and therefore tyre consumption – should be down across the board. And in a blunt sense the latest full-year panelmarket data from GfK, which tracks points of sale around the UK to indicate aftermarket tyre trends, does show that this happened. However, the latest infographic from the automotive market data analyst also reveals a few more subtle patterns to consumer behaviour in the difficult 12 months of 2020, compared with the previous period. This article is available in Tyres & Accessories' February issue.
