ETEL continues to lead top 20 UK tyre retailers 2019

After years of expansion amongst the top 20 UK tyre retailers, the latest data shows that this trend peaked in 2017/2018 when the top 20 accounted for 2014 branches. The same 20 tyre retailers had 1980 branches between them in 2018/2019. And what’s more, the reorganisation of one retailer alone accounted for a 40-centre decline in branch count, with the overall figure remaining positive due to growth at other chains. Here Tyres & Accessories analyses the branch count data in the context of 10 years of comparable research.

The growing influence of autocentres on tyre retail

In recent years autocentres have been selling more tyres than ever. At the same time, specialist tyre retailers – such as those featured on our annual table, have moved towards additional servicing and mechanical repairs in order to increase sales. This is especially the case at the top of the table, amongst the largest tyre retail chains where as much as 45 per cent of annual turnover is now made up of non-tyre sales.

Gulf Air selects Michelin as tyre partner

Bahraini national airline Gulf Air has announced its selection of Michelin to equip every aircraft type within its fleet with tyres. Michelin’s supply to Gulf Air includes fitment on its new fleet of Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, Airbus 320neo and Airbus 321neo planes.

Melksham restructuring hits Cooper with international operating loss

Cooper Tire has seen sales and profits rise in North America, while international figures have declined considerably. Overall, this amounts to small increases for the company. The company’s international operations (outside the Americas) loss of 1 million dollars is 8 million dollars down on the operating profit of 7 million dollars in the first quarter of 2018, which is largely explained by the 5 million dollars it has spent in ending light tyre production in Melksham, Wiltshire. Cooper expects these charges to amount to between 8 and 11 million dollars in the total year.

Pirelli: ‘Green Performance’ now half of all tyre sales

A decade ago, around 20 per cent of Pirelli tyres were made according to the company’s Green Performance strategy – with new production systems, reduced environmental impact and low energy consumption. The tyre maker reports this figure reached 49.8 per cent of sales last year, up from 43.5 per cent in 2017. Green Performance tyres accounted for 57.5 per cent of Pirelli’s High Value product sales.

Continental ranked as consumer brand Superbrand

Superbrands has revealed that Continental Tyres has been awarded Consumer Superbrands status for 2019.

The Consumer Superbrands survey has been tracking the perception of a wide-range of brands in the UK since 1995. This year’s survey featured 1,596 brands across 78 different categories, ranging from ‘Automotive Products’ to ‘Vitamins & Supplements’. Only the most highly-regarded brands from each category are awarded Superbrand status.

Hankook names Burkhill for northern UK role

Hankook Tyre UK has appointed Rob Burkhill to the position of regional sales manager for its Northern region. Burkhill brings nearly 20 years of experience into his new role of developing sales of Hankook passenger car and light truck tyres in the UK.

Goodyear renews SJ Bargh contract for five years

Goodyear recently renewed its partnership with SJ Bargh, a leading milk logistics provider. The contract has been extended for another five years, with SJ Bargh’s 500 plus fleet continuing to be equipped with Goodyear KMAX tyres and the Goodyear Omnitrac range.

Michelin Exelagri dealer hat-trick for Soltyre

Soltyre has gained Michelin’s agricultural seal of approval for its new Airdrie dealership, marking a major achievement for the tyre specialist with all three branches now members of the pan-European Michelin Exelagri network.
